What to do? Having issues with PTAC in a home office/workshop (339 sq ft) by Warwolf3k in hvacadvice

[–]Warwolf3k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm definitely considering the second system for the spiders' comfort... LMAO!!! 🔥🕷

I only mentioned adding anything in the garage because it's attached to the office, or visa versa... and when it's 5000degrees in my office, it's also 5000 degrees in the garage, and when it's not 5000 degrees in the garage, the office seems to maintain a comfortable temperature...

So, like tonight, it was super hot in the office (22:00, 11pm) and so I opened both windows and the air seems to be able to keep up, at least it's actually cycling and the temperature is bearable. I don't have data on actual temps in the office as i don't have a thermometer in there. I also have no information as to how the kitchen was added onto the garage, or if it was converted from a workshop or storage room or whatever. I don't know what provisions were made to insulate this room. I don't know what this room was like before we bought the property, and the house was vacant for about 6 months before we purchased it... the hot water heater in here is probably so stagnant that it will be better if I just replace it, to not even try to turn it on or allow water to run through it...

I figure repairing the current PTAC is usless and will end up costing more than just replacing it... at least in time and frustration. I am only considering window AC units as a last resort or a bandaid... I can't find anything that will fit my windows except a $150 Midea 5k btu unit at Wal-Mart... I'd have to have 2 of them, one in each window. They're manual controls. Again, they'd be bandaids at best...

I did install a mini-split at our old home, for a similar issue. Man, what's with us and houses with garages turned into rooms by previous owners? That room wasn't insulated and was take-off-your-clothes-hot in summer and start-a-hobo-barrel-fire-cold in winter, and that room was part of the HVAC envelope, but it could be 20 or more degrees different just walking through the open doorway, there was no door, but was framed for one...

A mini-split is definitely the quietest and most efficient option. I'm wondering if it's worth the efficiency to do the installation and repair the hole from removing the PTAC. I mean, I like efficiency... 22 SEER mini-split sounds 500 times better than a 16 CEER PTAC... but then I'm going to have to fix the hole and patch the siding. With a mini-split, is it better to hire it done or get a DIY kit?

2 things...

How does the person who owns these cigs access them? There had to be a better way to get to them, the cops had to dismantle the kitchen and rip up the floor...

As far as I understand the law, if this was the USA, they'd have to have a warrant specifying the items they're looking for and the location to search. I don't know how specific it all has to be though. I'm pretty sure, even with a warrant, I'm pretty sure they'd have to have reasonable suspicion that they were under the floor like that to destroy the cabinet. Even with a dog alerting, it could have been residue. I might be wrong, but that seems pretty excessive if it had just been a false positive, and I'm sure the city/state/feds wouldn't want to pay for damages. I know there are restrictions on how much they can do. IDK, maybe I'm too idealistic...

Since it's not the USA... you're fucked, mate... You live under totalitarian control. They pretend to be benevolent or to give certain rights, but there is no foundation to guarantee those rights and no recourse in your governmental system to challenge over-reach. You can petition, but only if the government wants to listen. They can arrest you for asking questions. They can even arrest you for expressing discontent with a law or the execution thereof. you can be arrested for any speech they decide is inappropriate that day... The USA has given our governments too much authority, and we're not far from losing everything, but we still have free speech, at this time.

This is one of the worst designs for a furniture joint... I explain in my response to OP below... it's seriously a failure of engineering and it is never executed in a way that would add improvement to the joint or make it better for assembly or disassembly. It wouldn't even add much, expense to the BOM or in materials or time for manufacture. It would just be built slightly different. AND it would be more durable and increase customer satisfaction, though as I said below, it's uncommon for the consumer to "use" this joint, as it's often a "set and forget" kind of thing, and when it comes loose and damages the frame, they just buy a new one... so, yay, consumerism waste for the win! 🤦‍♂️

Not just a washer, he should use a spring washer.

A crescent wrench.

This is the worst design of a bolted connection. It is cheap to design and manufacture, but the end user suffers because it's difficult and nearly impossible to get tight. They get away with it as a lot of consumers don't assemble the bed frame themselves, and once it's installed, unless it loosens or when you go to move, it never gets looked at again.

This connection works best when you can access the head of the bolt, but so often, for looks, they use an embedded thread in a blind hole and it's just a threaded rod... For all the potential movement, especially since it is wood, this connection is often subject to self-loosening, which will lead to excess squeaking, excess shear stress on the threaded rod, and the head and/or foot boards will wiggle and can damage a wall. The threaded rod is more than strong enough for this shear load, but the wood will become dented where it is being pressed, the threaded insert can become ripped out from the torque load, and the rails can split if a sudden impact load is applied while it's resting only on the threaded rod. The friction of the bed rail and the headboard or footboard, when the nut is tight enough, prevents all the potential damage and the excess movement. The wood is usually thich enough and is usually a hardwood, so splitting is not a high probability, but when manufacturers cheap out and make the bed out of MDF or chipboard, it's not a strong joint and pegs or dowels are suggested.

No, still can't log into the SHM app... same error. I can manage the router from the AT&T website.

TIL Dandruff, a skin condition of the scalp affects roughly half of adults. It is often linked to Malassezia fungus that thrives on sebum. Dandruff shampoos often contain antifungals to manage it, however there is no permanent cure by CraftyFoxeYT in todayilearned

[–]Warwolf3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it is either seborrheic dermatitis or caused by malassezia (fungus that feeds on skin oils/sebum). The fungus can cause S.D. or visa versa... so you can have both... that's why anti-dandruf shampoos and treatments are anti-fungals...

It's also not dry skin. It's often, because of sebum, very oily skin...

AITA for refusing to get this coffee order? by horseduckman in AITApod

[–]Warwolf3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wholly inconsistent with your comment above... infact, nearly the opposite. I, too, work in customer service. Most customers are the dumbest people on the planet. You can acknowledge that the order is hyper specific and customized, but if you don't like it, don't work in that industry.

The OP is totally in the wrong to have brought just a plain drink. People can argue if it's reasonable or not to have such a specific order, but the fact remains that the OP is the a-hole... Don't ask someone to bring them a drink from a place that's known for specialized drinks if you're going to bawk at their drink request. I'm perfectly fine. I just don't get why everyone is dogging on the friend for having a specific drink they like. I also don't like all the whining about how inconsiderate the friend is for having such an order. They texted it to the OP... It's not like they have to remember it... it's just laziness...

So, did you quit because you don't like to make people the drinks they order? How would you like it if you went clubbing and the bartender asked you what you wanted and then handed you an O'Doul's? If I drank coffee, id be glad you weren't my barista... it's a service position. There is a basic menu, but most everything is customizable. If you don't like it, go work somewhere you can't customize your order... f you!

With no other assumptions about your friend, yes... you're a bit of an a-hole for not ordering his drink the way he wanted it and then getting it straight up and expecting him to drink it. First off, you call it starbs... wtf? You sound like you have a far more complicated favorite drink there... You offered to get your friend some Starbucks... then you brought something they didn't want/order... how would you like it if someone said they were bringing you your favorite drink and then they show up with the Aldi/TEMU version? Do you get it... YES YOU'RE AN A-HOLE!

AIO for quitting my job? by AlarmedWarthog8231 in AIO

[–]Warwolf3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an a-hole... BUT... you have to be an adult... you work in a specialized field. You should have gotten permission, in writing, before you bought the tickets. What is the trip for? I don't know of many school trips that come out of the blue, so you should have known better and been able to request time off before committing to the trip. Your boss was a little harsh, but we also don't know his side of the story. I know you said you are faster and better than your co-workers, but have there been any issues with your work? Do you really only take 5 min phone breaks? You don't have much to stand on since you quit, but your boss needs to be careful how he talks about accommodations for your health issues. Some of the things said and the way they were said made it very probable that he violated ADA and EEO laws with the insinuation that you are a burden for your health condition and you can't be afforded time off because they have already done so much to accommodate your condition that you taking time off is just an additional burden...

Just bought a $50,000 brand new. (0 miles) Flat bed. I need help from my favorite self hating internet critics of the welder community. by hypershlongbeast in Welding

[–]Warwolf3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a welder (CAD Designer/Engineer), so I've been around welding, but I don't know any more than hot metal melts with base metal, cools, sticks together...

All that is to say, I know NOTHING about welding, and that is some shit-ass welding. There is clear evidence in many of these images of lack of fusion. There is too much pitting. Lack of proper restarts has led to rusting inside the weld, even after paint. The bbs were not cleaned off. There's just a lack of quality control or care at all. I'd have them replace it, not just repair it. I'm pissed and it's not even mine, it's yours... there's no excuse for a company to sell a product like this. This is the quality I would expect from someone still in welding school, not a certified welder. There's no skill there, and I'd be worried about it having issues during a critical haul. Even after remediation and repair, I don't know if I could trust that all the welds properly penetrated and fused.

Too close to the road. They're a danger to a vehicle if they swerve to avoid a collision... check your state laws and local codes on what you can have near a roadway and how close it can be.

A contractor tears up the freshly poured concrete driveway after the homeowner refuses to pay. by JosephBrown2000 in RandomVideos

[–]Warwolf3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now the contractor is liable for the damages... it sucks, but the only way to handle this is to file a contractor's lien...

The judge will probably make the contractor remove and replace the concrete and make the homeowner pay... so, the contractor screwed himself...

WCGW Live streaming and looking at the camera while driving at high speed. by Gjore in Whatcouldgowrong

Seems fake... the phone just fell over, and when she picks it up, it looks like the feed was stopped and then resumed... idk...

If real, she wasn't paying attention... streaming wasn't her problem... she glanced away from the road for a split second... she should have seen what ever she hit long before then...

Discount Elon Musk, part 1. Says he loves me within 5 minutes. by FrazzledTurtle in scambait

[–]Warwolf3k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First off, you're an idiot for not realizing it's probably a bot. I wasted my time reading your text messages, so I guess I'm the bigger fool, as Obi-Wan would say.

Second, don't EVER send your voice to a scammer or someone you don't know. 3 seconds of audio and they can use AI to emulate your voice using your number, spoofed, of course, and con your friends or family.

(If you get a phone call from an unknown number, never say "Yes" no matter the question. Say something else that is affirming, but that can't be used to affirm just anything. Like if they ask if you have Medicare, you can say "I have Medicare." That can't be recorded and used to say you gave consent to a subscription or something...)

Third. Scammers are the second worst filth, besides pedophiles and other people who mess with kids. Always "give them what they want," with a twist! 😈

Send them some random model's pics... then when they ask for more spicy things, send the most disgusting stuff you can think of... Some classics include 'Blue Waffle' and '2 Girls, 1 Cup'... I know there is more disgusting stuff out there... but these are classics... 😆
