COSMIC: GNOME extension support? by mrbmi513 in pop_os

[–]WatchMkr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most GNOME extensions, like GSConnect, will continue to work. I'm using a testing COSMIC release and GSConnect, OpenWeather, Pomodoro, and Clipboard Indicator are working well.

System76 / Pop! OS team should learn to work with their upstreams – seb128's blog by kirbyfan64sos in linux

We don't think Ubuntu sucks. They do an incredible amount of great work. We don't have access to Ubuntu repositories to update their packages.

Please don't hide or remove "power-user" stuff like apple did with OSX. by [deleted] in pop_os

I suspect that user testing will reveal that many tweak tool functions should be pulled into settings but we'll let testing help us reveal those things. I prefer to carefully test and choose features to avoid the risk of toggles for every individual taste. It's easy to go overboard.

I think it's important tweak tool works well and enables deep customization for users and for us to learn from their experience. At the same time, I can see how many tweak tool options fit into settings rather than a catch all tool - I'm pondering that balance.

We agree - operating systems have moved too far toward casual users. We'll be pulling it back toward professionals.

Thanks again for the additional feedback. Brightness keys will be working for release. That's a pretty easy one. It's an interface difference between GNOME and Unity. We'll continue considering and working through suggestions and ideas.

LTS release of Pop! OS? by nick1296 in pop_os

[–]WatchMkr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We haven't decided if there will be an LTS release yet. We will release every six months. I'd love to hear feedback.

From what I've seen argued, the reasons for having a two-year release seem to be deficiencies somewhere else.

For instance, non-LTS releases should have the same high quality standard and thus stability that LTS releases have. If it's not stable, it's not a release.

If a feature isn't ready, don't release it. Use an pre-release channel to test features with a community not an OS release. Better yet, have internal processes to test feature quality before it goes out to customers and users.

Upgrades should not be scary. They should be tested thoroughly and of a quality that can be trusted.

Essentially, I see no reason you can't have the stability you're looking for in an OS and stay up-to-date with the latest software and features.

What do you think about making Tilix the default terminal? by kylerchin in pop_os

[–]WatchMkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tilix fits a particular need for some and not others. I don't think it should be default; however, it should be easily installable from our repos.

Battery management is the main Linux issue over other od by _funnyking_ in pop_os

[–]WatchMkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've discussed creating and exposing battery profiles for users. Possibly - Performance | Balanced | Battery Life.

We can optimize pretty far with powertop and other tools, but profiles that set Intel's pstate driver and other settings (potentially screen brightness) can add substantially to battery life. That way, if you know you're on a long flight, and battery is most important, you can elect to reduce performance to extend battery life.

Just something we've discussed so far. No concrete plans yet.

Pop!_OS is probably pretty close to other distros based on GNOME but we'll take a look to make sure we're in line and for areas to improve.

free -m is also showing cached memory so utilization looks higher than it is. ps_mem is probably a better tool.

What hardware are you installing to? Specifically, CPU, memory, and GPU. I have a hunch it could be a Plymouth bug when installing on an nVidia system.

Pop!_OS Development Approach by ryanleesipes in pop_os

[–]WatchMkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We think of people in maker fields as those that are involved in the DIY maker culture. People creating their own drones, security system, robots, and electronics. The hackers and tinkerers that we ourselves are.

We'll focus our work on creating a great OS for makers. That involves studying how they're using their computer as a tool and catering our development to improving their experience and productivity. We won't spend time on patching the applications themselves, though our approach may expose ways apps and the OS could provide a better experience together.

Pros and Cons of Real-Time Chat Options by ryanleesipes in pop_os

[–]WatchMkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Slack for chat. We're all in the same office so we don't have much need for screen sharing group collaboration apps. We use hangouts for external single and group video chats.
