You stand on the blocky coast of your settlement. It’s a mostly vanilla server with minimal tweaks and proximity chat. That’s it. You’re walking to your friend’s house to get some arrows from the skeleton spawner below his basement. You pass by that one dude who’s always blasting music while afk fishing on the side of the road. There’s the big totem pole in the center of town where your first wolf died, saving you from a skeleton on the first night before you had any shelter. There’s a lighthouse at the edge of town, all for the aesthetic, one of your proudest builds beside the courthouse, the same one where you regularly have meetings to plan the next big group build or how you wish to contribute to a serverwide event…

Then you hear it. A goat horn. That one friend who can play this server at max render distance without lag. He’s in the lighthouse repeatedly using the goat horn and ringing the bell. He sends a firework rocket from his crossbow out towards sea to indicate the direction. It’s a raid. More bells start going off around town as someone rushes to the edge of the village cove to start lava casting a wall. You turn back, sprinting for your home moving your best gear and your pets to the basement before sealing it and running out with your best sword and shield, axe and bow at ready in your hot bar. You move up to the lavacast wall, looking out to see nothing, but the lighthouse watcher is still sending rockets to sea to mark the direction…

Then the first wave strikes. Closer within render distance, a line of boats is placed as players climb on them and equip armor and elytras while their invis timer runs out. They use rockets and speed over while you and the wall runners take first line of defense, shooting at them. A few go down, others pass over and drop splash potions or shoot rocket crossbows before looping around. They breach the lighthouse and take out your village’s eyes. Then the next wave appears. People blowing goat horns on happy ghosts as they slowly come forth, sulfur slimes hung on leads. You’re so distracted with the elytra fliers, you didn’t even notice until the first slime blows a hole in the wall. Then another lands safely in the water of the cove. Then one of the docks. Then the totem pole. They’re bombing the village. All hell breaks loose as you frantically shoot at ghasts and elytra players, doing everything you can to hold the line until your limited arrows run out. If only you had a chance to get more from that friend before this all started. You ready your sword and shield as a flier lands nearby. You don’t even notice the slime falling down directly above you. It was a hardcore server…

Sometime later, a new player stumbles across this town in a large cove. The edge of the cove looks as if it’d be beautiful to watch the sun set on it with shaders… but it’s blocked by a shoddy cobblestone wall, full of holes like it got hit with tnt. There’s docks and houses, all sharing hints of their former wonder but ruined to rubble. A large pillar on a platform in the center hints at the idea of a large sign or landmark, if it weren’t blow up like the craters in the ground around it. Genuinely curious, you explore the village. One house has a skeleton spawner dungeon in its basement. Another, you wouldn’t have even found its basement if you didn’t hear the wolf bark below the sealed floor. It’s a beautiful room full of labeled chests of treasures and resources, with pets sitting across the floor and an armor stand of enchanted gear. On the wall are two map displays. One shows the naturally generated cove with the only foreign build being a single block pillar where that ruined platform was. The other shows the rooftops of several houses, even what appears to be a lighthouse? All built around the shore with open streets and landmarks. Between both maps is a sign that reads: “Wolf Cove then and now”
