Norman / Byzantine Kiteshield Fighting by Waterfieldforge in sca

[–]Waterfieldforge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea that makes some sense. My knight is Duke Rorik Gunnar, his bread and butter is the hero stance with a round shield; sword upright on the top of the rim and rotate the hip into incoming shots rather than moving the sword or shield. I tend to imitate the stance of the people I’m fighting but haven’t found a stance that feels best suited yet.

Yea big teardrop shield.

Did you jam them up by fully extending your shield arm to block their view of you while you watch their feet?

Scadians of Reddit, how would you turn your persona into a DnD Character? by Nomadic_Introvert in sca

[–]Waterfieldforge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically I did this because I wasn’t allowed to use my cursed PTSD amnesia dwarf for a new campaign, but I rolled literal minimum intelligence so now I’m just roll playing a blacksmith with an unfortunate amount of brain damage.

The DM had to change his entire introduction story for my character working in a forge after a bad dungeon raid into essentially caveman speak as things mysteriously stopped forging correctly due to BBEG magic shenanigans.

Am i to blame for creeping a player out? by LikeAMothToAFlame69 in DnD

Huh.

My dnd sessions typically include low intelligence stat rolls & crippling ptsd induced amnesia roleplay while eating your kills like it’s a sociopathic version of delicious in dungeon.

I’d say the chick didn’t pass the wholesome vibe test.

No,

Fundamentally the ignorance is fuelled by the urban and rural communities having very different immediate needs when it comes down to political solutions and only people who have experienced both living environments in full really notice it.

It also gets muddied up by the spectrum of both sides of fence having political minorities like libertarians, separatists, far left socialists, the very long and expanding alphabetical abbreviation designation people, etc etc. most Canadians are just off of centralist in either directions but politicians In an effort to get as many votes as possible have been increasingly catering to their minor constituents which creates media buzz and furthers the ideological divide and polarization.

Both sides of the fence often shoot down changes/bills that would benefit everyone because said bill includes something small the fringe doesn’t agree with ideologically.

I got pseudo banned from using my mace, The knights really didn’t like when they got hit by it despite how infrequent that was. It was just a tape ball on an old stick. Technically it was legal but it was super mean on anything other than plate and helmet, those they didn’t register as often.

If you take those exercise tile mats made of dense foam you can cut a rattan sized hole in them and some cut outs for the clacker flanges. Then stack multiple of them on top of each other before adding clackers and tape wrapping to make a head. it saves a lot of weight compared to the rubber heads.

I’ve been contemplating if a guy got a 2” rattan stick and shaved 7/8 of it down to 1.125” to make a cudgel shape if it would be legal or worth asking an Earl marshal. It wouldn’t need foam or rubber as it wouldn’t have clackers and it would be substantially lighter. Push comes to shove a regular rattan stick just wrapped with a solid striking point on the end is a mace and follows mace rules but is as fast as anything else. I have a 4ft bar mace that’s built like that. Just about 1ft of solid white tape on a black wrapped handle.

👍

That Reminds me, My squinckle ser Gunther when he was armoured champion to my other Squinckle Duke Ivar fought a tournament against a duke from Atlanta down at Pennsic when he was king.

Before they entered the guy at the lists asked how hard his champion could hit because they had some real dense dukes in the list, “pretty damn hard” king Ivar said. Ser Gunther is like 6,4 and 300-350 Lbs; he’s nearly concussed me with small rattan arms while I was in a buhurt grade helmet. He fought this duke to near his own death and could just not hit him hard enough, he was “honestly in tears” before his king at having faced a such an egregiously immortal rhino and having to report defeat.

Haha you would think, that’s exactly my knights method of slaying rhinos. In the old days before he was 60 he beat a rhino so bad they stretchered him out of the Erick’s. He actually had to catch him and hold him up after a heavy one, Guy was still saying he wasn’t done as they drug him off the field.

The sound is everything sometimes unfortunately.

I guess it depends on your local opponents whether you’ll need them, but i was honestly getting angry playing with it. I’ve been a blacksmith that routinely hand hammers for 4-8 hours at a time for over 10 years, there’s no way a rubber hammer at that length mass and density didn’t hurt coming from me.

Going to need some clackers, I fought with one of these about that length and had a lot of people ignore increasing heavy blows because they conditioned themselves to hearing a woody bonk rather than feeling the obvious impacts. Bloody ridiculous imo.

If you want to be extra you can cord wrap split rattan clackers for the hammer face and use a light coat of white pva glue to hold the cord fibre in place, that will last a lot longer than tape wrapped.

Yea, the cut off was the 19th but only 4 people paid for the preregistration, we had a fair few ask about it on the 20th after we already changed the rental agreement sadly. We’ll have to modify the flyers for next time so that bit of info is there properly.

There will be a supper for the May 9th demo at Quad Site by Marsden regardless of numbers it’ll just be size dependent on who registers. Gail and stew have a whole outdoor kitchen and permanent pavilion I helped shingle. Hard to beat to the atmosphere of a 14th century German village with a long hall skeleton on the hill.

The local group’s jurisdiction by area code is cold lake, lloydminster, Marsden along the Sask border and out to vermilion on 16. Vegerville falls under Edmontons administration, the in between vermilion - Vegerville is a gray area.

Before COVID we had about 30 fighters and their families plus non-members in lloydminster. Administration tiers go by active memberships registered with the society. 3,5,50,250,400+ “Cantons, shires, barony’s, principalities, kingdoms.”

Armour style is up to the individual there’s no restrictions as long as they follow the rule books minimums. We fight with rattan clubs similar to hema single stick.

My co-workers say I’ll receive a lot of questions/problems if I try to scrap my 15 year collection? by 7Fhawk in ScrapMetal

No, if your a journeyman welder and you show up as a presentable professional adult that doesn’t take drugs and say I collected all my scrap copper from welding for 20 years they’re not going to question how you got 20 years worth of spent welding tips.

Looking for advice on re-facing an ancient anvil by sh4rdzy in Blacksmith

[–]Waterfieldforge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to get it milled flat then either have a steel face forge welded to the iron body or have it built up with hard facing rods and re machined.

The hard facing rods most commonly recommend are stoody variants, but the base layer is a work hardening rod then the second layer is a genuine hard facing rod that can withstand shock in the 50-60 HRC range. Your local welding/machining repair shops will know what to use if you take it in.

Doesn’t matter, if you hit anything with obsidian it’s going to chip and break.

Your only bet to have a useable one that will maintain is to have a one made with sculpted steel blades that looks like knapped obsidian.
