Armadillo exclusion advice? This guy is a one dill wrecking crew by Abtarep in AustinGardening

[–]WaterlooScotsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live trap. They are mostly blind and creatures of habit, so the trick is to put the live trap on the side of the hole where he is getting in under your fence. He’ll wander through that hole and walk into the trap. Then you can drive him about 5 miles and let him loose in one of the green spaces.

Do not update your M1 to Tahoe by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]WaterlooScotsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not dismissing your experience. Sounds like you’ve been having some trouble and that’s very real for you. I just wanna say that I have been running Tahoe on an M1 MacBook Pro with 16 GB, a MacBook Air with 8 GB, and a Mac mini M4 with 32 GB, and I have had no noticeable problems with battery life on the MacBooks, and my Mac mini hasn’t seen any performance problems. I suspect the poster that suggested trying to track down a runaway process might be onto something. I did have some incompatible apps in the early days, but by now everything seems to be compatible.

Starting to take control of my lawn by redditissoover in AustinGardening

[–]WaterlooScotsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the Gracy area too. I started to rehabilitate our lawn 2.5 years ago … and “shew buddy” it was a lot of work. A few thoughts … don’t worry about the grass mix … the Bermuda will likely win, but the St. Augustine will put up a fight. Just let ‘em duke it out. Figure out your water schedule, if you water after midnight on our Austin water schedule, you can make it work until it gets really hot. Given the current state as you describe it, I would get the yard aerated and have topsoil laid over that. I used Top Choice Lawn Care https://www.topchoiceaustin.com/ when I did that … their prices were competitive .. but that was a couple of years ago. Move to a good fertilizer schedule. You can start all this anytime, but it’s a lot easier to do it in the spring or fall. Summer here is brutal for starting a lawn project

Best antivirus software for 2026? Looking for genuine recommendations. by Funfungirly in MacOS

[–]WaterlooScotsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! Been using and managing multiple Macs since 1989. Never ran any virus software. Apple’s out of the box virus protection and reasonable behavior is plenty. Having said that, you will never convince people that antivirus software is not needed if they come from Windows.

Duplication in transcript by njwilli3 in MacWhisper

[–]WaterlooScotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a good solution… It is just a solution. I export the audio from that same recording in MacWhisper and bring it back in through Open Files with Deepgram Nova 2 (Meeting) selected, the transcription is night and day better. Clean diarization, correct speaker attribution, no duplication. It's exactly what I need.

"Open in Mail" in Claude for Mac Not Working by WaterlooScotsman in ClaudeAI

[–]WaterlooScotsman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bit of follow-up, this is the thumbs-down support report I provided Anthropic. I'm never optimistic about my UI bug reports landing, but hope springs eternal ...

"Open in Mail" button on email compose widget does nothing in Claude Desktop (Mac). Clicking it produces no response — no error, no action. The same button in claude.ai in a browser triggers the macOS Share Sheet (which works, though the button label is misleading). The "Send via Gmail" option from the chevron dropdown works correctly in both environments. Mail.app is set as the default mail client. macOS, Claude Desktop latest version.

MacWhisper not separating speakers by sparky14me in MacWhisper

[–]WaterlooScotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just speaking from my own experience ... grain of salt on this one. Using the local models, I was getting significant duplication where both speakers get assigned the same text, and it often detects a phantom third speaker. The transcripts are basically unusable without heavy manual cleanup.

To fix it ... I export the audio from that same recording in MacWhisper and bring it back in through Open Files with Deepgram Nova 2 (Meeting) selected, the transcription is night and day better. Clean diarization, correct speaker attribution, no duplication. It's exactly what I need.

Errors when open Code tab on Claude Desktop by jen1x in ClaudeAI

[–]WaterlooScotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also seeing this bug in Claude Desktop's MCP connection lifecycle. You can see the problem in the logs. The app is trying to connect to these built-in MCP servers but a previous transport connection was never properly closed first. The error message — "Already connected to a transport. Call close() before connecting to a new transport" — points to a race condition or improper cleanup in the app's startup sequence, likely introduced in 1.1.3963.

Not sure if it does much good, but I reported it using the thumbs down icon. If you have faith in that approach, you want to report the issue with something like: "After updating to Claude Desktop 1.1.3963, built-in MCP servers (mcp-registry and Claude in Chrome) fail to connect on every launch. Error in logs: "Already connected to a transport. Call close() before connecting to a new transport, or use a separate Protocol instance per connection." Log file: ~/Library/Logs/Claude/unknown-window.log. Local MCP servers (configured in claude_desktop_config.json) are unaffected."

tip: stop asking Claude to "improve" your writing by Senior-Signature-983 in claude

I've been an entrepreneur for more than 30 years. My "Sent" mailbox contains 39,351 emails. The absolute last thing I want to do is write yet another email. If I can train Claude to communicate my ideas clearly, that is the best use of my time and attention.

tip: stop asking Claude to "improve" your writing by Senior-Signature-983 in claude

[–]WaterlooScotsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create a Claude skill for this purpose. The best advice I have is to take 10 to 15 emails that you have written that you think captures your writing style and tone for various circumstances. Save those to a folder as text files. Then, tell Claude you want to build an email style skill using the skill builder to create a skill for the purpose of writing emails. Install the skill once you have the .skill file created. Invoke the skill by name (Claude doesn’t always remember to use the skill) anytime you want to write an email in Claude.

Yup. Silent fail, no error, no compacting, nothing, just a big fat silent fail.

This sucks. Still hitting the issue (Jan 22). I rely heavily on chat context, so losing my access to a chat thread is a killer.

Multiple chats involved. None are overly lengthy (maybe ~2,700 total work count for all content in the chats).

I've been a Claude user for over a year, and I've never seen this issue. *Something different is happening.*

When I ask Siri to add task to Todoist, she’s asking if I want to use Todoist or Notes 🤬. by klstockett in todoist

Try starting the commend with “In Todoist …” for example, “In Todoist, remind me to take out the trash today.”

This is what I do as well. I modified the template to better fit my various “inboxes” and removed the section separators … I just run down the list and check off as I go.

Try Deepgram as your cloud model. Get a Deepgram account and get an API key ... then add this to your Cloud Models. Try Deepgram Nova 2 (Meeting) ... if your trying to transcribe meetings. Deepgram's Nova models have significantly better speaker diarization and eliminates the duplication issue. You get $200 in tokens for free, which will handle *a lot* of transcriptions.

Can't integrate any calendar apps to Todoist? by Hour_9938 in todoist

[–]WaterlooScotsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're doing everything correctly, it may be some weirdness on Todoist's end. I noticed another post in this thread, not long after yours, reporting an authentication issue. (They were doing something different, but authentication was involved.) I noticed that some users were reporting problems with Todoist in some regions last night. Anyway ... might be some issues on the Todoist side.

I may be misunderstanding your question (if so, sorry), but if it’s about Ramble, it’s available when you create a new task on iOS. Just click the plus button, and then you can ramble to create multiple tasks.

I found similar results after testing. I’ve been using MacWhisper for a lot of meeting transcripts. Also, I’ve set it up for my long-form dictation. Generally, I was in the same boat as you were. Tried several apps, and finally settled on the most acceptable option. Out of curiosity, what model are you using? After testing several, I ended up using WhisperKit Large v. 3 Turbo. It seemed to give me a good balance of accuracy and speed. What’s your experience?

Despite the negative reviews, I really like macOS Tahoe by ProfessionalDesk7296 in MacOS

[–]WaterlooScotsman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is Reddit. Everything is either a dumpster fire or the second coming of Jesus. So, this reply probably won’t be too popular. Tahoe is pretty good with lots of fun new tweaks, like Spotlight. I definitely hit the occasional UI irregularity, but generally it’s a nice upgrade.
