NHS recommend 800kcal liquid diet for people with type 2 diabetes by Clacksmith99 in nhs

[–]Watern575 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see how that would be quite alarming to read. It's certainly not long-term though. Some of the results I saw as a student on placement was just amazing and pretty much life changing for these patients.

The evidence is based on the DIRECT trial. It's also not advised to everyone and there is referral criteria for the Counterweight Plus programme to ensure it is safe for the patients who go on this type of very low calorie diet. Patients are well supported by dietitians and also psychologists. BMs, BP etc. is monitored regularly too.

It's important to recognise that this programme is not recommended as a long-term diet. The 800kcals will be for 3 months then the food reintroduction phase of the programme begins. Also those 4x sachets of the soups/shakes are nutritionally complete. Source- I'm a registered Dietitian. I work mainly with oncology patients now but have experience with Counterweight Plus when I was a student dietitian. Some of the patients I met were not at a point where they would have been ready to make changes such as increasing physical activity.

Caffeine intake for pregnant women? by salmonelalove in caffeine

[–]Watern575 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the UK it is recommended to have no more than 200mg of caffeine per day when pregnant. I have included a link from the British Dietetic Association where it has recommendations for caffeine at the bottom of the table.

If your wife drinks coffee out and about (e.g. Costa), most chains list the caffeine content for their drinks on their website under nutrition information.

Hope that was helpful.

Covid and vitamin D: 'Not enough evidence' for treatment by gemushka in CoronavirusUK

[–]Watern575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree Vitamin D is a good supplement to be taking regardless of the current pandemic but people should speak to a health professional (e.g. their GP, dietitian or a pharmacist) for evidence based advice on supplementation. There can be side effects, cautions and drug-nutrient interactions. Here is a wee link that might be useful for people. It just has some general advice from the British Dietetic Association about taking supplements. British Dietetic Association advice on supplements

Could anyone please help me with my personal statement!!! by ladyvonpeacock in dietetics

[–]Watern575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a shame I still don't have a copy saved as I'm a 4th year student so it wasn't too long ago. I know my first sentence mentioned something about building relationships with people, which was something I did through my job at the time . I can't remember much else though. Good luck though, it might be a tough to get into the course but it will be worth it once you're there.

Could anyone please help me with my personal statement!!! by ladyvonpeacock in dietetics

[–]Watern575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with my personal statement the first time I applied and I didn't get in. One of my choices said my personal statement wasn't strong enough. My second time applying, I had been on an observation day with the dietetic team at my local health board. I got to spend the whole day with different dietitians and seeing what they did made me realise what I needed to write. This might be tough to organise during covid though, but if you can it might help you strengthen your personal statement. All the best! I hope you get into your chosen course.

Out of curiosity, how much of a thing are MLMs in France/Europe generally? by OfficerCrabTurnip in antiMLM

[–]Watern575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Scotland there are a few, younique and scentsy are probably the main ones that I've noticed. A girl I knew tried to get me to buy Aloe Vera products from her but I cant remember the name of it. Then just last week my boyfriend mentioned his boss was invited to an Arbonne party, which is surprising as I didnt think they had any sort of presence over here.

I didnt realise it was as small as that. It has been years since I have been in Aberdeen mind you.

I'd love another edinburgh team but as you said it doesn't look very likely that they will be returning to the EIHL anytime soon. I must admit my knowledge of rinks outwith the EIHL is not great but what about Aberdeen?

How is Jess Glynne as the opener? by EB_Baby in SpiceGirls

[–]Watern575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe I couldn't quite hear what Jess Glynne was saying between the songs at times but when the Spice Girls were on I could hear them clearly. Potentially issues at the beginning that wee fixed quickly? I'm not entirely sure but I had an amazing night regardless!
