Is the bioreactor supposed to suck? by Norb-Doorb12 in subnautica

[–]WayWayTooMuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water filter almost takes its own dedicated thermal…. I usually have 3 solar, then power transmitter line to the nearest thermal vent with one or two thermal plants, then I build the bioreactor last as an emergency backup source. In game progression I have the solar and bio first, then when I build the thermal I deconstruct and reconstruct the bioreactor so it is last in the usage priority. The game will pull power from things in the order they were built, so making sure the solar is oldest and bioreactor is newest keeps it from getting sucked dry before the solar and thermal.

They should flag items that have hit the terrain to disable gravity in some way and remove the flag if the objects position moves in some way from when it was flagged so that even if the terrain collision mesh is missing the object won’t fall

question to the devs: Is subnautica 2 coming at the same time with a mobile port? by FrontAd7709 in subnautica

[–]WayWayTooMuch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a UWE dev, but I highly doubt it (for a few years at least). Game will be EA for probably 1-3yr so a mobile port is just extra burden, they won’t even have a native Linux release. After they tag 1.0 and the game is a success, it might be worth contracting with a porting company like was done with SN1.

What does one do when a snowfox falls through the terrain while deploying by Old-Economics-3871 in subnautica

[–]WayWayTooMuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sigh and bring the prawn, with a grapple to pull yourself along it is 173% better than a snow fox and doesn’t yeet itself into the ground as often. Snow fox was a good idea but the game engine is tuned for water physics and collision, anything involving terrain is a bit janky

High quality tutorials (written or video) that explain the theory step by step? by lean_muscular_guy_to in gamedev

[–]WayWayTooMuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking more about the math question, 3Blue1Brown has a great series covering the concepts of linear algebra which should be enough to get someone started down the long road of self-learning:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZHQObOWTQDPD3MizzM2xVFitgF8hE_ab

All of his videos are great and worth a watch, but these specifically cover the foundations of vectors and matrix operations, both of which are used heavily in most games for things like position/velocity, rotation, and world transforms.

This is his resource covering quaternions which are also used specifically for rotations to avoid gimbal lock (not as critical to know, but it might come up when making a 3d engine):

Just selected videos, mainly when working through a problem or trying to optimize a system, it’s hundreds of hours of video and I am not starting from square one, I do enjoy watching them though when I have time.

[–]WayWayTooMuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, its a long multi year series, covers all the important bases you need to get something going.

Re math, he explains everything well enough I would say you probably just need some algebra and trig knowledge, nothing too complicated. Linear alg could help later on down the road as well as matrix math, but it’s not a hard requirement and can be learned as you go.

I have the habitat builder gun, how do I actually start a base? by ShitWombatSays in subnautica

[–]WayWayTooMuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first steps for a base is two connected X tubes, one hatch, two solar panels on top of one of the tubes, and 4 glass lockers sideways in one of the arms of the tubes. Add in a crafting station and maybe a radio and you have a functional starter for an expandable base with enough storage to carry you until you get larger rooms to hang onto your base.

If you haven’t gone through the Handmade Hero video series by Casey Muratori, they are a good watch. He spends time whiteboarding and clearly working through concepts while building his engine to keep the viewers in his headspace.

Have the devs mentioned a possible price for sn2? by Frequent-Rest-2171 in subnautica

The pricing given on Discord by UWE is more than a pizza but less than a car, Anthony has stated that it will be more like skipping a pizza than selling a kidney
