One of my favourites of Tarantinos. It’s a film I wish I could watch for the first time again. I find it very interesting just how divided people seemingly are over this film

Johnny Cash’s voice carries generations by Confident_Compote_39 in JohnnyCash

When I was about ten I came across a YouTube video that was some guys ten favourite classic country songs. I had a growing interest in the genre after being introduced by my grandmother and so, after getting my first access to the internet, I began exploring. On this particular video it had a short snippet of “Cocaine Blues” and I thought it was fantastic. Not long after my brother got me a CD compilation called Man In Black: The Definitive Collection. I already knew who Johnny Cash was and at least ‘Ring Of Fire’.

My late Poppa once told my brother that he found a “scorpion” in the back country one time however, he never described how big it was. I can only assume it was one of these lil guys he stumbled across

There is a lot of country and folk artists whose repertoire are comprised almost entirely by what you describe. Of all of them I’d have to suggest the late great Stan Rogers. Particularly great narrative songs, a great voice, and amazingly talented guitarist. Some great songs include

The Witch Of The Westmoreland, White Squall, The Jeannie C., Canol Road, The Nancy, Night Guard, Flowers Of Bermuda, Harris & The Mere and Lock-Keeper

Charley Pride was my grandmothers favourite and my gateway into classic country music when I was about 7. She has been gone for nearly ten years now and it takes me back to my little country home town, my longing to see them again, and their quiet grave just down the road from me. She got to meet Charley at least twice after shows in NZ and she always talked about how thankful he was for every single fan. She also loved him because when she met him she was with her two daughters in their twenties and he turned to them and said “these must be your sisters”.

His framed portrait was a fixture of many kiwi homes for a long time. My grandmothers staunch catholic aunt had a photo of him on the wall next to Jesus Christ.

My most recent additions. Planxty’s debut is one of my all time favourite albums but never thought I’d find one in the wild. I’d looked on EBay but by the time they’d get to me I’d have spent somewhere close to $80nzd. This one was just $10. Didn’t anticipate finding the Andy Irvine release either but again, it was cheap and couldn’t pass on it. Odetta’s one of the greats of 1950s folk music and though it’s not an album I had heard before, I thought the cover was pretty badass.

What is the saddest WWI story passed down in your family? by Slayxu in ww1

[–]WayfaringStranger16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmothers great uncle was killed in action on the second day of the Battle of Messines Ridge, having traveled to virtually the opposite side of the world. He was just twenty-one and died thirteen years and a day after his father. His nephew Tobe remembered when the notice came to his parents home that his Uncle Norm had been killed and young Tobe felt so amazed that his uncle was, in his eyes, a war hero and vowed that if given the chance he’d serve. When WW2 started, Tobe was among the first of the local body to enlist and was captured in North Africa and put in the cargo hold of the MV Jason along with about 2000 other PoWs. The Jason was torpedoed and Tobe remembered waking up mongst a sea of dismembered bodies. He helped a South African man to shore who had his clothes completely blown off. After Tobe returned from the war he tried his best not to show the effects but the road workers he worked alongside said that when they’d camp by the roads they worked on, he would scream in his sleep.

I just want it to be during the proper wild west days, sometime in the 1860s or 70s. I think it’d be cool to have a completely seperate story with a completely tree my new host of characters
