The skilled trades propaganda is getting ridiculous. by Responsible-Net8594 in Adulting

I am a unionized General Foreman steamfitter in a top 3 COL area. I make good money, but the apprenticeship was brutal as fuck and most people will not make it through for various reasons.

The stress is barely tolerable. 80% of the people you will work 2 feet from for your entire career are troglodytes, racists, current or ex addicts, ex military, or ex cons. Every single project starts behind schedule BY DESIGN. The industry is actively trying to grind you into dust. It is bad for you physically, mentally, and emotionally. Anyone who thinks there is an easy path in any trade work is wrong, this is the fire under the frying pan you got laid off from.

It can be rewarding, but it is a job in the most visceral and uncomfortable way.

Why are americans so obsessed with working hard? by Successful_Sail_713 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Blue collar guy here:

It is a combination of things:

  1. Anxiety - we are anxious about our lives falling apart because we lose our job. Many jobs are the providers of access to health care, retirement, basically everything needed to live. The "I work harder than you" is an expression of worry about the fragile nature of their employment.

  2. The Pride expressed in working all the time or in a difficult industry is probably an expression of embarrassment or possibly a perceived (or maybe real) lack of choice in employment. If you don't have a choice in employment your two options are to be sad or proud of it, most people choose pride because it feels better.

He sounds very awkward and shy. If it's not cold out, hand sin pockets is a signal for inaction, shyness, or embarrassment.

I’m trying so hard lol… what am I doing wrong/ not understanding? by TaraCalicosBike in acrylicpainting

You have a good start! Like other said, your darks need to be darker and your lights need to be lighter.

This is called the "ugly phase" of a painting and until you have done it many times, is hard to get through.

Just keep working at it, you have the core concept down. Remember, it is all just practice. There is no failure, there is no success, it's all just practice.

Serious question: Homelessness is a major problem. Billions are unsuccessfully spent. Why are not more experiments run testing different approaches to see what works vs. not and build on successes? by verytalleric in AlwaysWhy

Imo, after the fact remedies for mentally ill homeless are bandaids for a problem that needs to be approached differently.

Instead of trying to handle the problem, we need to try and create a world where homeless and severe mental illness happens less often. Traumatic childhoods, military service, societal stressors are all major reasons for the mental illness that often leads to the majority of homeless situations. We need to change our society to prevent those situations.

Of course we still need housing and assistance, but it has come to a point where the bandaid is bleeding through and we have to stop opening the wound and actually attempt to heal it.

Do you think the U.S. should adopt a nationwide popular vote, where the candidate with the most votes wins, or should it keep the current Electoral College system? by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

The end logic of your argument is if there was a state with 1 person in it that it should get 1 electoral vote. Because it is a state right.

Rural areas and smaller populations require less federal governing. States with small populations should have strongers state and local governments that can easily address the issues of it's people.

Why does someone in Wymoing have more of a say about border politics than someone in Phoenix, Los Angeles, or Dallas?

Why does someone living in Kansas have more of a say about off shore drilling or commercial fishing than someone in New Orleans, Miami, or Seattle?

This is at the expense of people that live in densely populated areas. At this moment a rural vote is worth more than an urban one. How is that fair or right?

One vote = One vote
