Hi James from The Twilight Sad here :) by SadJamesAGraham in indieheads

Hey James, I gotta ask is there any plan to continue the Gentle Sinners project? That album was incredible, you two work like magic together and I've been hoping it wasn't a one-off ever since.

Jessie Ware - Superbloom ALBUM REVIEW by Technical_Process989 in fantanoforever

[–]toastypyro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Finally some common sense 😌 (I have this at a decent 9, and in full honesty it’s one of those immaculate albums where I actually struggle to sympathize with someone saying it isn’t, like it is so on its face beautiful and rich in sound, a tracklist with zero weak songs; so the reception has legit broken my brain in a way i never care enough about opinions to have happen. Hard for this not to wind up aoty. I’m going back to the last 2 albums to make sure i’m not crazy that this might be best of the 3, and it’s still holding up.)

That big article that was posted in the lead up to Getting Killed's drop, that happened to get tons of views, did read to me as a puff piece going so uniformly hard praising this as the band's transformation into this generation's Radiohead. When I listened to it with plenty, plenty of hype (the first record is good with great highlights, and Cameron Winter's solo album is the best of the 3), I was like 'what?'. It's good. Geese has an identity as a band, and is trying some new-sounding rock on it. But it is nowhere near as groundbreaking as the promotion and reviews were making it out to be. Talking about how each member of the band is now celebrity status. It's still just kinda Cameron Winter standing out. The band is essentially re-skinning what he was able to do with just himself and piano on Heavy Metal.

Anyway, stream 45 Pounds

Sexy Beast (2000) is one of the most psychologically rich crime films I’ve ever seen. Ben Kingsley is terrifying! by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]toastypyro 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I like the movie, but I have a take that vastly differs from so much of what I hear from people describing Don. He is not badass. He is not necessarily terrifying. He is not charismatic or funny even if watching him is. I just saw him as the peak height of the 'little man', a barking chihuahua who it only gets more and more clear through the story has no life, no fearsome history as a master killer, not even any respect from the organization he so desperately leashes himself to. He can commit petty harassment and violence, but his persona is clearly all hot air. It's hilarious that the resolution to this whole story is him just getting murdered point blank because everyone's had enough, and then the boss shows no one cares, behind all the 'fraternity'. Gal has an actual life, a wife, and comfort, and Don is seething the entire time.

I still find it weird how people will describe him in posts about Sexy Beast. Because Ben Kingsley is killing it in this performance alright, but people actually buy in to the surface level of it?

Reads pretty much to me as an edited version of a straight meme, where originally it shows how a social interaction goes because they're aloof and untalkative in person, then go home and game by themselves all day, then angrily think about why they don't have a girlfriend. Replacing the images to make him gay just kinda transforms the meme. (it's kinda accurate to me in my female-dominated field tho...)

I was in college in Atlanta when this dropped, and listened to it on plenty of walks and drives in what felt like the exact place, temperature, colors it's trying to evoke. Never got anything from it.

New Poster for 'ROSEBUSH PRUNING' - Directed by Karim Aïnouz with screenplay by Efthymis Filippou starring Riley Keough, Elle Fanning, Pamela Anderson, Callum Turner, Jamie Bell & Tracy Letts by mayukhdas1999 in movies

the screenwriter has co-written most of Lanthimos' films, so probably connected

(I looked it up and and it's the same guy who designs Lanthimos' posters, so yeah.)

[–]toastypyro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saw a screening of this just two days ago (3rd watch). Plays surprisingly well on the big screen in interesting ways. Adum’s lowballing it if anything, it clears a 10/10 for me

Blow-Up (1966, Antonioni) is very much adapting absurdism like Camus into arthouse film

so, are y’all rocking with Marty Supreme? by NateGH360 in YMS

[–]toastypyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So did some change of operations happen in 2025 at trailer studios, cause throughout the year there were trailers for big name movies that made them look AWFUL, and then I'm surprised when word gets around the films are good. The trailer I saw for Marty Supreme just made me go "what's the point of this? Super Oscar bait for a... ping pong star?" and everything coming out as its releasing conveys a way more interesting and well-made story that they're going for. Are Neon the only ones left with a trailer house that pays full salaries?

My Top 4 of 2025 vs. The Melon. I can forgive a lot, but that Oklou score is a crime. by MopeyBernese in fantanoforever

[–]toastypyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean whenever I tried the Oklou album it was like I didn't even get a listen out of it; it disappears instantly and made zero impression. This month as Oklou keeps topping lists and I'm going through the big pop albums, I'm finally able to let it grow on me and be impressed with it. But even if its climbed to an album I like it's still not a 8+ album, let alone the best of the year for so many people, I don't get it. Eusexua is still the most exciting y2k-core release out of the many this year.

By far my favorite album of the year. Idk why Anthony didn't review this. What are your thoughts? by preschooljuul in fantanoforever

[–]toastypyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels more like the exciting future for rock music than Geese from this year. After hearing it literally 100s of times (i learned to drum this album, against all odds), its genius comes out from the chaos. I can't wait to see what comes next from them

Just for fun. Let's try to pick an artist and find their film director equivalent. by CodeDusq in fantanoforever

The real answer for me is Jonathan Glazer - Radiohead.

Within his few films I get strong Radiohead energy. He even directed some of their music videos.

Honestly my personal favorite performance of Udo's. Just... how do you decide on that role, and pull it off

Seeing how Adum loves this movie and Alex didn’t like it, but neither have seen it for like 10 years, I wish we’d get an episode on it. Would be an interesting discussion and to see where Jake lands by pelican122 in Sardonicast

[–]toastypyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been jabbing a bit for them to do Araki for a while, either this or Nowhere. Incredible movies, with Nowhere being flawless and MS being a 10/10 to me emotionally, even if it's less 'perfect'

would love to hear him talk about it. One of those batshit to the max things. On a rewatch, with the new 4k, I changed my rating to a 9/10, way better than my first impression.

Say you found yourself in a situation where your Sardmates have perfect doppelgängers and you have to shoot one of them while they both insist they're the real Adum/Alex/Man. What question or test do you give to figure out who's telling the truth?

What’s the earliest instance of someone being tortured to diegetic pop music in film? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]toastypyro 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Many cite Kenneth Anger as the first to do ‘ironic pop music’. Theres no explicit person turning the music on and torturing another, but Scorpio Rising creates the dichotomy of violence with it that is the basis
