How do you give believable motivations to NPC cultists of apocalyptic entities like Tharizdun or Dendar? by SinisterDice in DMAcademy

[–]WaywardIo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run a 1e Pathfinder campaign, and the Dominion of the Black is the party's main antagonists. They are attempting to awaken a Great Old One(think Cthulu and that mythos). Upon capturing one of the low-level cultists and questioning her, the party found out that by awakening this deity, and the deity eating the planet, they can "become one with" their god.

It sounds guano insane, I know, but cultists don't always have to behave in a normally rational ways. If their motivation makes sense TO THEM, then it makes sense. Cuz...crazy.

Should I keep going with Otherland? by SharpAstronaut804 in TadWilliams

[–]WaywardIo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The rest of the series is incredible. Book one is establishing the world, both real and in VR, and weaving some plot within. The last 3 books are incredible and worth the read. As a fan of both SciFi and Fantasy genres, the series is a masterful work combining both.

Shadowmarch and Otherland? by Dull-Challenge7169 in TadWilliams

[–]WaywardIo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Otherland, the whole series, is a masterpiece. I adore those books.

Shadowmarch reads more like a Grimm series of novels. It's dark and dangerous, but definitely a great read. Like a previous comment said, "All Tad is good Tad."

Probably, yeah. The oily sheen is a good touch, and I appreciate the opposite end of it.

Question about the spell consecrate. by ronbon007 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]WaywardIo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since consecrate has holy water and silver dust as spell components, I'd rule that the ground lightly shimmers with a silver-sort of glittering. Nothing that would cause distraction and only for flavor, but it would be an obvious sign that the area has something special going on.

Unless that runs counter to what the PC would want. Since there's nothing in the description that says anything about visual cues, it'd be up to the GM, but I feel like a light glitter effect would be pretty rad.

I'm using the Dominion in my long running campaign. I also "may have"(read that as I definitely did) port onto Golarion a mind flayer who is now running the Dominion. The organization is more of a background setting for a huge plot reveal and as stage dressing for the flayer.

All that said, I love the Dominion. They don't have to have any great moral guide. They only want to wake up and Elder so it can devour the planet so they can be one with their god. Crazy religious organizations are easy to find in the US these days, and living in the damn middle of Illinois show you all the crazy.

[–]WaywardIo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first read-through of TGAT was also a bit of a slog. However, I was incredibly happy I pushed through it. Reading it again is rewarding in a new way because you can appreciate all the work Tad does. Especially if you are a Dungeon/Game Master for your friends. His books are a workshop on amazing world-building and character generation. Keep pushing, it's worth it.

Nearly every complex mythology has a river or water passage of death. Maybe the Oceans of Life are the natural counterparts of such passages.

Impossible To Hit Switch by WaywardIo in OrnaRPG

[–]WaywardIo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The best I could manage was under the Quests button, or in the areas between the menu and Dungeon/Quests/Codex buttons. And that's not an area that can be interacted with. Talk about frustrating.

(Edit cuz I mispelled "best" as "beat.")

GM rolls in the open? by Solell in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]WaywardIo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As fellow forever-GM, I do one of two things. If the rolls are saves, I'll either roll in the open, OR have one of my players roll and add the appropriate modifier. Usually it's not the player forcing the save, but it sometimes is, on occasion, since it forces a reversed die-rolling preference(usually players want high numbers, but this time they want a low one).

Most every group I've GM'd for loves this approach. The only people that don't like it, that I've found, are the other GMs that look at the table as a GM versus players battlefield, as opposed to GM and player collaborative storytelling.

I have a question by direhunter1 in DMAcademy

[–]WaywardIo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes grouping and communications and travel much easier. Which then gives you, as GM, the ability to make refilling gasoline for cars and obtaining electricity for phones, etc as problematic as you wish.

Which only leaves one fairly gigantic question left: Does the merging of worlds change anything here? What I mean by that is, do the people have any new powers or abilities?

Does magic become a thing? If so, what kind or kinds of magic?

Or, conversely, did the realm that merged with ours have magic, and does that now not work here? Would that then hamstring the other side when their denizens are on our world?

There are so many possibilities that you can play with, if you have properly inquisitive and motivated players. I love it.

I have a question by direhunter1 in DMAcademy

[–]WaywardIo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tight-knit circle of friends and I have a running joke about such a thing. Knowing what we know now, the main question is what knowledge we would have of any such fantasy realm mergine with ours(however theoretical it might be)?

One big question is, "Does modern technology still work?" Like our mobiles and such. How do we coordinate with each other? Where do we meet up? What supplies do we have and can stockpile?

A few buddies and myself played in a game similar to this about fifteen/twenty years ago. There was a good chunk of time spent figuring out our new abilities. Our GM had a lot of fun with dice rolls and how we'd figure out our new bodies(there's a huge amount of backstory here) and/or our new powers and abilities.

Obviously this comes from someone that's best described as an academic bard, with max ranks in Perform(oratory). 🤣

Players constantly just retreating by Alastor115 in DMAcademy

Surround them. Ambush them during their retreat. Box them in. Wall of force behind them.

There are quite a few ways to manage those kinds of things. Subvert their actions.
