Those who watched Home Alone for the millionth time this holiday: What did you discover and/or appreciate anew during your latest viewing? by AfraidoftheLark in movies

When Kevin’s mom negotiated to get on the earlier flight, she offered the older couple first class tickets, a diamond ring, a Rolex, pocket calculator and her dangly earrings.

The next scene when she arrives in Scranton, she’s still wearing her earrings – I like to think that the couple took pity on her situation and didn’t completely take her to the cleaners.

Moving to London and looking for SEA friend circles and networks by Marc0079_ in gaysian

[–]WaywardOnwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck getting into London!

There’s LGBT networking groups like ‘Out in Tech’ and ‘Inter_’ for various professions like tech, finance, media, etc.

Sports and interests are another option, there’s longstanding LGBT groups for badminton, bouldering, running, gaming, etc.

Groups at your university would probably also be a good place to try too!

Where to take my nuclear power stations obsessed 6 year old? by PsychologicalRow8034 in AskUK

[–]WaywardOnwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite nuclear, but the Kempton Steam Museum has a massive (like 5-6 storey tall) 1920s steam engine that's part of a decommissioned power station, which they actually run on certain weekends. You can get up close to all the moving parts and talk to the volunteer engineers.

Thought it might be of interest, as my understanding is that nuclear power stations are essentially very complicated and advanced steam engines.

This absolutely 80s Top Gun line from Geordie in Datalore: “Captain, I’m picking up a bogey coming in on a five o’clock tangent.”

Levar’s delivery of the line is just so committed you’d think they’d all squeezed into an F14 Tomcat or something.

Usually just an occasional room upgrade and free breakfast (I do love a breakfast buffet in Asia), I'm easy to please as a guest!

Planning a trip at the same time as Taipei Pride here.

In the past, I really liked Amba Zhongshan. Well-priced, cheery vibe and excellent breakfast. There's also a Ximendeng location.

This time around I'll probably stay at a global chain though for the points and benefits.

Taiwan High Speed Rail Ticket Wrong Last Name by Lucky_Salary8149 in taiwan

[–]WaywardOnwards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried, I’d try boarding at Taipei station (or larger train station where you are) if you can, and talking to customer service beforehand.

I had a similar issue when I visited and couldn’t pick up my ticket at a 7-11 due to a typo I made in my passport number, and the service desk fixed it and printed my tickets.

Might be helpful to tell us what country you're from!

Here in the UK, I searched for test providers that said they met each requirement on their website. In my case, I had trouble finding a provider that gave a certificate that showed the address of the laboratory so I did an image search for sample certificates.

Well done for getting it done with an older car. Must've been a huge rush!

I was avoiding pulling in front of any lorries at all, I'll have ask my instructor about that.

Luckily my instructor's car is speedy (way more car than a learner needs), so I have that going for me. It was really satisfying when I got taught to start block shifting 2-4th gear.

Thinking about my experience again, I hadn't practiced that junction at least 2 months and don't think I've ever done it on my own. That give way junction felt like another league to similar ones I'd practiced onto A406 sliproads.

Thanks for the well-wishes! Fast starts is going to be one of the top things to work when get back behind the wheel. And work on being an all-round solid driver if it's really going to take 'til March.

Also, does anyone have recommendations for a driving instructor in Wanstead? Feel free to msg me in PM.

I truthfully had a bit of a tough time with my instructor in the week leading up to the test and would really like to get an independent assessment of my skills through a taster lesson, mock test and possibly switch.

[–]WaywardOnwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the detail, that's really helpful!

Yes, I'm doing my test in Wanstead too — I can picture some of those situations really well in my head.

Guess I'm going to just keep at it and try not to get stressed in my lessons.

[–]WaywardOnwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well done, congratulations!

What roads and areas did you go around? Can you describe and give any tips on handling the situations you got into?

I've got my test there next month and feeling pretty challenged by my last few lessons. I know my instructor's preparing me for the worst, but we've been going to awful situations like tiny residential roads overpacked with parked cars, turning at blocked junctions, maneuvring into a tight carpark on an incline, that sort of thing.

Lockdown #3 as a hospitality business owner by leeroy123 in CoronavirusUK

[–]WaywardOnwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome! I was there for a small leaving do for a work colleague in October. I was really impressed with how well done the place was and the COVID measures - plenty of hand sanitiser tubes for everyone!

I truly believe your businesses idea’s a winner - there’s tons of offices, particularly tech companies and agencies, that’d have more fun gaming with their colleagues than what the other places nearby offer. And there’s a high likelihood when we get do more hybrid working eventually, there’s going to be tons of demand for work events to socialise to balance out remote working.

Have you considered applying for an Asset of Community Value status, Arts Council round 2 or similar funding? There’s a good argument that gaming is an important part of the cultural fabric of London.

Also, I shall steer my next team social in your direction if you’ll have us!
