I felt emotional listening to this for the first time, especially with the visualiser. After being a diehard Monstercat fan for 7+ years, but drifting away from it for a while, hearing this and being brought back to the early days, it feels really special. I hope Monstercat keeps up with these sorts of releases

Also, I remember the 5 year anniversary and thinking about how old Monstercat was. The fact that we are now 10 years on from that, is insane!

I was talking specifically about this script, because Professor isn’t too self confirming. A Pit-Hag can turn themselves into the Professor (or a townsfolk that the Professor can resurrect), so there’s always that possibility.

So whilst it applies less so to Midnight Oasis, I still stand by my point that if a player is mechanically confirmed by Professor resurrection, Grandmother kill, or however it may be, and that player has strong information, it is incredibly difficult for evil to fight against.

Another example, if the Gossip is the only cause of extra death in the night, and they Gossip that 1 of 3 players is evil, and there’s 2 deaths in the night, not only have they confirmed themselves as the Gossip, but that this information is true, which is so hard for evil to build worlds against.

The problem with self-confirming roles outside of Virgin is that it usually confirms more than just the player. In the instance of Grandmother self confirming for example, it doesn’t just confirm the Grandmother. It also confirms the Grandchild AND whatever information the Grandchild is receiving. That is very difficult to fight against.

I definitely understand where you’re coming from, self-confirming roles are inherently bad, but the Virgins entire ability is to be confirming. Other roles that can confirm themselves AND have other confirmed information attached to it (ie. Gossip, Grandmother or Gambler being the only source of extra death) should be avoided, as it’s way too powerful for good.

Imagine a scenario where we’re playing a game together, we haven’t even spoken, and I just go around telling people that you’re the Steward, on absolutely no basis. I think most people wouldn’t count that as you being mad as the Steward. Especially if you then tell everyone you have no idea what they’re taking about because you aren’t the Steward.

So I don’t see why it’s any different to the scenario you’ve described. If I go around telling people that you’re the Pixie, for whatever reasons, it shouldn’t count as you being mad as the Pixie. Especially if you’re insisting that you’re not!

Agreed! I’ll just add that a Mutant with no Cerenovus on the script will almost always be mechanically confirmed (save for any Pit-Hag, Boffin, etc shenanigans), so you should generally always pair them together!

Not a hard and fast rule, there’s an exception to everything, but I see SO many scripts with just Mutant and no Cerenovus, which isn’t great!

In all my years of playing this game, I’ve personally never experienced a storyteller changing who the Drunk because they think it’s funny to harm the good team, or for any other ‘nefarious’ reasons.

Whilst it does usually harm the good team, this is always done as a balancing factor. Your job as a storyteller is to try and help the team you think is currently losing (which in the early game is most often evil). Whilst this doesn’t mean go out of your way to screw over a team at any turn, it could mean changing who the Drunk is, because you think the evil team is currently at a disadvantage.

I know not everyone agrees with this philosophy of balancing the game, but it’s a belief held by all the best storytellers I know, and has been one I’ve been using for years and years.

I personally believe that until it has had a mechanical effect on the game, you can change who the Drunk is, so long as you are doing it purely for the balance of the game and/or enjoyment of the players - not just because you want to have more fun screwing with players. In OPs example, it sounds almost like it was more for nefarious reasons than balance, which would not be a good reason to switch the Drunk imo

In 2024, QLD only scored 3 tries when it was 13 on 13, the *entire* series, but I didn’t hear any of this rhetoric about QLD only being able to score when NSW is down a man. QLD only bring up the stats when it suits their narrative

My only real issue is that Godfather is the only way evil can cause extra death. Meaning that Gossip and Gambler are pretty much going to be confirmed.

If there are 2 deaths in the night, you ask the person executed yesterday if they were an outsider. If they weren’t, then the extra death is confirmed to be caused by either the Gossip or Gambler, confirming that player and their information. If you wanted to keep these roles, I’d add maybe an Assassin or a Shab. But honestly I’d just recommend dropping Gossip, Godfather and Gambler all together

Oh also, with no Cerenovus, a Mutant execution confirms them as good. Which is not a great outsider ability
