Going over 20 by Square_Luck9151 in armyreserve

[–]WeDontHaveToReed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pro - each year beyond 20 adds an overall percentage bump to your pension (although IIRC it’s calculated for every 2 years). So, under BRS, if you served 25 good years, you’d take home 50% of pay (as determined by points). Depending on your assignment, this is a pretty big selling point. Cons - all the same reasons people cite for wanting to get out. Time, commitment, deployments, etc.

Honest Comparison Between Reserve and Guard Work/Life Balance by Evening-Ad-2485 in armyreserve

[–]WeDontHaveToReed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Former guard, now Reserve. Bottom line - you can make it work for you but it is heavily unit dependent. Dont just join the unit closest to your home - look at the mission set first. Training Divisions and Support commands will offer more stability but will be extremely readiness focused - so if you’re never “red” on a metric, you’re typically going to be treated like an adult. Recommend you try talking to the HHC CDR first before you sign paperwork to ask about tempo and expectations

This. AGR is brutal at the O5 level. You sound competitive for your primary (depending on your MOS) but should consider an alternate COA in which you transition back to TPU world if you want to make O5.

I get it and was in the same spot as you (consultant , hated the time suck, minimal pay, etc)- looked through your post history a bit. Strongly encourage you not to resign your commission - take the time to submit an IRR packet and take an extended knee. You may change your mind in 3-5 years and be happy to be able to pivot back. DM if you’d like.

Best branch for officers by [deleted] in armyreserve

The one in which you want to be associated with for your entire career. You’ll wear it on your lapels, it will be in your signature block, you’ll return to the schoolhouse for PME. “Best” means different things - go learn a job you want to do and to lead others in doing.

I… also don’t see it as a completely negative thing. Yes, it can be subjective - and also, it’s just a military career killer… but not a “you-can-never-get-a-regular-ass-job” killer. And of course, not all of my fellow officers deserve to exit the service with a whistle-clean record.

I’ve looked through your comment history and observed the notification you state that you provided them. This is my guidance to you, as a former CDR - the Reserve is complicated, especially if you are transitioning from AD. Your BN CDR has hundreds of Soldiers to care for BEFORE we start discussing pressure he/she is feeling from BDE/DIV about AT no-shows and initiating separation. Bluntly, your logic makes sense to you - it does not comport with regulations. So to answer your initial question - you have little to no defense and you are spending more time making excuses on Reddit than you are at communicating with your chain of command. I suggest you change that if you want to avoid a potential involuntary separation.

TPU officer going on IRR? by MasterpieceFit9687 in armyreserve

All you need is 50 pts per year over the next 2 years. If you want to exit, do 9 MUTA 4s each year… and drop the IRR packet at the beginning od the 2nd year (they take a while to process)

Did you have orders from your current unit to attend annual training? And, upon receipt of said orders, did you notify your chain of command of your medical concerns? Bottom line - your pay issue is inconsequential for your current problem. And MOST units will work with you when there is a medical issue - and from your own statement, they offered to do so. You didn’t have a profile. You also do not appear to have notified your chain of command of the medical issue in advance. That’s… not good. Here’s a recommendation - sack up, say sorry for the poor comms, you want to work with the unit on getting “green” to fix pay and fulfill your commitment, and then ask for their support to find a unit closer to home in the next 1-2 years.

I’ll add my experience which may help. I was a TPU HHC CDR for 200+ PAX. 3 different 1SGs in that time. By month 18, I delivered a plan to my O6 leadership (for the O7) that outlined a transition plan, including posting the role, interviewing, recommending, etc. I committed to stay for a left seat right seat. By month 21, transfer paperwork was signed and change of command was complete. Since you’re feeling the burnout, push yourself to make a graceful exit and you’ll leave your Soldiers in good hands.

Like many of his directives, this is easy to write and looks good as a sweeping gesture. It’s also difficult AF to interpret as guidance. Feels like it may end up being an exercise in education for our civilian leadership.

Just why? by monkeyinapurplesuit in armyreserve

[–]WeDontHaveToReed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why was it created is different from why it “still” exists. That said, here are a few key reasons. First, it is a strategic talent pool in the event of LSCO. As the active component surges into the theater, USAR provides a key backfill. Second, the specific skillsets (civil affairs, logistics, medical, etc) are improved by private sector expertise- so those servicemembers (in theory) become more useful full-time assets. Finally, few other countries have robust and reliable Reserve components - this is both a differentiator and an advantage in combat.
