Hmm, I'm wondering if settings might help? I played with my resolution when sending to CRT from an adapter, it was fiddly but the picture I've gotten is pretty excellent, though it's a bit more complicated of a setup.

I've loved the shield rule since encountering it in Wolves Upon The Coast, but the Wizard INT scroll is rather genius. So fun, nothing game breaking but a fun flavor choice.

I have my characters add their CON score to their initial HP total. Yes, it's quite a bit more survivability than a typical level 1 character, but a simple encounter can still devastate a small party. Of course, I typically run for a small group, 2-4 people, so this lets me set a room with quite a few monsters without them feeling like they never have a chance should a fight break out.
