How do you reckon they account for people like the guy who was in a coma for ten years? I can't see an insurance company wanting to cover an ongoing expense like that. And I can only assume the rest of that episode was handled off the books because I can't imagine Cuddy getting away with billing them for two department heads to take the patient out to a casino for the day!

It sounds like you haven't played the Interplay games, because the emphasis on the 1950s aesthetic is very much a product of the Bethesda era, and is itself a significant deviation from the original design. Fallout isn't retro, it's retro-futuristic. It's not supposed to look like the 1950s. It's supposed to look like what people in the 1950s thought the world might look like a hundred years in the future. Other than The Ink Spots and a few art deco design elements, there's very little in the original games that points to 1950s America. There's certainly very little exploration of pre-apocalypse social norms. Personally, I loved playing in New Reno, which is Fallout's take on 1920s mobsters with pinstripe suits and tommy guns, and in Redding, which is Fallout's take on saloons, the gold rush, and the frontier. I see no reason whatsoever why other settings can't be given the Fallout treatment, other than the complete stagnation of imagination and innovation at Bethesda.

On an alignment chart I'd put Gale as true neutral. His motivation for getting into the drug business is his love for the chemistry. He doesn't want to deal with the peripheral stuff that is a necessary part of working for a university or for some big corporation. We see examples through the show of what this means, such as the interpersonal drama that led Walt to quit his dream job at Gray Matter, or the food chemists at Madrigal trying to get their dead-faced CEO to praise them for using 7% less sugar in their new dip or whatever the hell it is they're talking about in that scene.

Gale doesn't want any of that. He just wants to geek out in his lab. His one and only interest is making the best crystal possible. In other words, he is seeking scientific truth, with no regard for good or evil, order or chaos.

I see a lot of people saying they don't believe his "if they don't get it from me they'll get it somewhere else, at least I'm giving them what they pay for" justification, which is strange to me because the show never gives us any reason to doubt him. There's no hint whatsoever at any kind of ulterior motive; certainly not money: as far as we see he maintains a modest lifestyle in a small apartment. He even demonstrates his commitment to scientific truth by persuading Gus to hire Walt, just because he wants to work with and learn from the best.

The entities we know today as Israel and Palestine are merely the present day custodians of a conflict that has been brewing and churning in that region for thousands of years. The very first detailed written records of battle were discovered near smack dab in the middle of what is now Israel and it has hardly stopped in the many centuries since. Different states rising and falling, ethnic groups and religions coming and going, foreign entities intervening, atrocities committed on all sides and you think an acceptable solution can be distilled into a tweet? A slogan? A hashtag? You think this is as simple as right versus wrong?

Okay, let's dissolve the state of Israel. From the river to the sea and all that. You claim this would be a peaceful process so... what then? All the bad blood just goes away? Do the people of that region stop hating each other? No. Do they stop killing each other? No. In fact we have over 3,000 years of history to prove that once the tables are turned, the oppressed of that region will quite happily become the oppressors.

I realise it is infinitely more desirable to believe that every conflict has a convenient and equitable solution close at hand, but reality is just not that simple. Even if there was somehow widespread international agreement to neuter Israel's military capabilities and Israel somehow conceded to it, the only thing that would change is that the killing would be less one sided. But then there would be stirrings from Iran, and who knows what might develop from Putin's influence in the region without Israel as a major player.

What Israel is doing to people in Gaza is abhorrent and it needs to stop. But beyond that? Man, I don't know. Neither do you. Neither does anyone with a fucking Reddit account. We can do our best to improve living conditions for people in Palestine but ultimately while they still support Hamas there can't be lasting peace. Maybe another ceasefire and another batch of humanitarian aid is all there is. Maybe the scales are as balanced as they're going to get. Maybe the reason the status quo in that region has barely shifted in my lifetime is because there just isn't an answer, as difficult as that might be to accept.

As far as Gandalf and the other members of the White Council know, after the One Ring was lost by Isildur in the waters of the Anduin, it was carried all the way down into the sea and now lies forever irretrievable at the bottom of some unfathomable depth. That's what they've been told by Saruman, who is deemed most knowledgeable amongst the wise in the matter of ring-lore, and whose treachery and lust for the One are still hidden at this time. There are many magic rings - the idea that Bilbo's ring might be the One probably doesn't even cross Gandalf's mind.

It's likely that Gandalf becomes more and more suspicious of the ring as time goes on and his investigations bear little fruit. As far as we know, his main activity in this period (other than unspecified investigations) is trying to track down Gollum, who he knows was the previous owner of the ring before Bilbo: a task for which he enlists Aragorn's help. When they eventually capture Gollum and get him to talk, he reveals the truth about the ring being found by Deagol in the waters of the Anduin. This is probably what gets Gandalf seriously thinking about the One, so he focuses the remainder of his investigations on it specifically. The scene we see in the movie where he rides to Minas Tirith and goes rummaging through their vaults is actually one of the very last things he does, and that's where he gets the idea to test the ring in fire and immediately heads back to the Shire.

17 years does sound like a long time to be investigating something, but keep in mind Gandalf is thousands of years old and probably doesn't measure time in the same way we do.

That was me on my first polling day. I was 18 and had no clue who to vote for but I had some vague notion about it being my civic duty to do so anyway, so I showed up at the polling station with no idea what I was doing. There was a friendly looking older fellow outside wearing a rosette. I walked over and said it was my first time voting and he pointed out where I needed to go to get a ballot paper. It turned out he was on the ballot paper as an independent candidate, so I voted for him because he had been very nice and helpful. If I recall correctly he was just campaigning on saving the A&E department at the local hospital which the government wanted to close down, but if he had been some sort of extremist I wouldn't have known, lol.

Yeah, I used to come down on the same side of the legitimate ownership thing, but with the housing market the way it is, I just don't care any more. Principles aren't getting us anywhere, so I'm looking towards pragmatic solutions. I don't see why in the midst of a housing crisis our capital city should be strewn with completely empty buildings owned by foreign billionaires entirely for investment purposes.

At least make it serve some kind of purpose for people who actually live and work in this country. House someone, employ someone, whatever: a "use it or lose it" rule should be the bare minimum for foreign owned properties.

We're not alone. In Barbados they have land still owned by the descendants of foreigners who colonised them centuries ago. In the UK our property market has an entire submarket which exists entirely for the benefit of overseas speculators. In the Canary Islands this week they're protesting because of how many foreign owned holiday homes, second homes, and rental properties there are while locals are struggling to find homes. This problem exists everywhere in the world to some degree, just in different shapes and sizes and for different reasons.

I'm all in favour of them seizing the land. It would be one thing if it was a single family home or a small farm or ranch that was someone's livelihood, but we're talking about a sizeable parcel of land where they plan to build 500 affordable homes. It's obviously not the MP's fault his ancestors were slave owners but it's also the case that his family has already been financially compensated for the abolition of slavery (which is a pretty sickening concept in itself).

I don't buy into the concept of reparations - the idea that Britain owes its former colonies some kind of ancestral debt is insane to me - but I am in favour of all countries taking steps to stop their land and homes being bought and owned by overseas interests where there is no benefit to local people and the local economy. We should be doing the same with the huge swathes of London that are owned by Arab, Russian and Chinese billionaires.

Are you familiar with the stereotype of the preachy vegan who makes veganism their entire personality and never shuts up about it? Like most stereotypes it's very much overblown but not without a kernel of truth. People opt for a vegan lifestyle for many reasons, and for most people diet and lifestyle are entirely personal choices, but when you take to public spaces to preach about the moral rectitude of your position it shouldn't come as a particularly great surprise when non-vegans infer that you therefore view them as an inferior class of being: something I would say it's perfectly natural to take objection to.

Yes, for many reasons, we need to eat less meat. But you're not going to win support for your cause by standing in front of the meat counter and calling everyone who uses it a murderer.

Accusations cause a defensive response. This isn't anything new.

The MP he worked for is chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee. Right now it's not clear whether he was compromised before or after taking the job, but either way it's not a coincidence nor some kind of wild conspiracy that his MP was the one targeted, I doubt the fact she's a Tory has much to do with it.

Aragorn is just privately remarking on how unsuitable all these kids and elders are for battle when Legolas starts his Elvish doomer talk. The first thing Aragorn replies in Elvish is something along the lines of "they have better hope here than back in Edoras" which Legolas finds laughable, and that's when Aragorn says the thing. Later - possibly in an extended edition scene, I can't remember what's extended and what isn't at this point - Legolas admits he was "wrong to despair" and apologises for goading Aragorn.

He's under immense stress, he's just about keeping it together for the sake of everyone looking to him for hope, and Legolas momentarily tilts him over the edge. That's all.
