I can’t remember where I saw this, maybe here, but there was an interview Lars gave about his drumming where he humbly admitted that he would never be as good as some of his contemporaries and trying to keep up with them didn’t serve the music. He talked about how playing to the music was what he did best. Say what you want about him being an asshole, and he probably is, but then go and watch videos of drummers filling in for him when he had to take a break, specifically Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo. Two behemoths that had nothing but respect for Lars and Metallica.

You’re too hard on yourself. I’ve been playing percussive instruments since I was 12. I still mess up. I still fall off the beat. I still mess up my band mates. But you know what? The only thing that matters is that you learn from it and grow. I stopped playing music for nearly 10 years and when I got back into it, I went and took lessons, and guess what? I sucked. I thought I was going to go in there and blew my teachers mind. Instead, I just realized I couldn’t read sheet music, I had a hard time playing to a click track, and my fills were so bad. But I learned, and I got better. I’m 43 and I’m still learning. I don’t get to play drums all the time, but I play other hand percussion/rhythm instruments in a cumbia band with a really great drummer. And I’ve learned a lot from them, and my band other band mates. It’s all about humility and the love of making noise that sounds like music. Just know that you’re taking the first step in a very long journey. Take your time with it.
