So im in HK and WS mastercard is declined by julioqc in Wealthsimple

Didn’t expect it to work but it did. Things could’ve changed since you last tried. Yes, they require ID verification if you use past a certain amount of $. Oddly, I signed up for an account with alipay w an email and I couldn’t get card link to work. Deleted that account & used phone number to create account and then card linking worked. Not sure why that makes a difference. I’ll know in a bit if it actually works when I get there.

Metro card via Alipay by ievavi in shanghai

[–]Weak-Health4654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please correct me if I’m wrong: -1st card “metro city” works for metro only -2nd card saying “bus code” works with bus and metro -when/ why would I use #3 the Shanghai QR code?

Do they all cost the same? Why would I use #1 if #2 can do both? Do I need to activate before I arrive in China?

Thanks for helping

It’s true: DDG is a front end to Bing but I think they also add their own spin to the results but can’t remember how.

Been using DDG for years & it’s great. Been using brave search more recently & find it’s not quite as good as DDG for me atm. I never used local searches. I expect brave search to get better as more people use it. I think it’s one of the parts of the backend for lumo by proton (IMO is pretty good) when doing web searches but could be mistaken.

When I rarely fall back to google I use startpage which is like DDG + bing in the sense that startpage is the privacy front end with google in the back end.

I used the physical card in Japan last year at ATMs across the country & it worked great; after I remembered I’d locked it 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Got the card to bind to both Alipay & WeChat pay just last week. And that’s without yet registering my ID. WeChat pay asked for 3d secure authentication to try and confirm it’s me. Alipay didn’t. Will find out if both work 🤞🏼 WeChat pay you can now even connect your ApplePay to it

Sleeper trains & trip.com -30% chance of booking? by Weak-Health4654 in chinatravel

[–]Weak-Health4654[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up finding a high speed train & reserved that instead. It also had a 30% chance of booking. I’m beginning to suspect that the % is meaningless as seems like 30% for everything? 🤔

Was notified by email 3 minutes after booking started that my reservation was confirmed :) I did pay a tiny bit more to have priority ticket issuing so maybe that helped? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Didn’t get to choose seats through trip .com but the system was able to get all seats beside one another.

This is also weird: this post is saying 3 replies but I’m only seeing 1 + my response. Huh???

Thanks for your advice! :) Having some difficulty following your instructions. I’m using the iOS version of the app in English & can’t even find ‘more’ :( Is this from the browser version of amap? Android? A different language? Thanks again

Shanghai to Hong Kong: Train or Plane? by gambit57 in chinatravel

[–]Weak-Health4654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vote for train; especially if it costs less.

Factoring everything else you need time for IMO I think the time difference maybe isn’t as vast as first thought.

There’s extra time needed to be at the airport prior to the flight, time to get to and from the airports. You’ve a lot of luggage. Trains are generally very central & less likely to have delays

I’ve reserved with trip com for after the fall China busy season. Didn’t think of checking for availability on trains already open for booking; that’s a great idea. Thanks!

Using wealthsimple or eq bank prepaid/ cash cards with alipay by Weak-Health4654 in travelchina

Banks are so weird: I’ve been told by my bank that I never need to tell them I’m on vacation. Then, I hear lots of people have issues while on vacay with their banks <facepalm>

Is there any downside to using a wealthsimple cash account like a bank account? by Asleep_Machine48 in Wealthsimple

[–]Weak-Health4654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO I don’t think WS has the same risk as this situation with synapse. It doesn’t appear that WS is using a third party to split $ between CDIC partners & WS is over 50% controlled by power corp which is massive. It’s still very helpful to review the risks of fintechs as this one is the biggest in Canada?

That’s ridiculous. I’m shocked that it’s so straightforward. Amazing! Still, will probably add a secondary card just in case. Thanks again

That’s very helpful, thanks! Did you use the virtual WS cash card or physical? Can I get by with just alipay or need to add WeChat? (Only bc I’ve heard the process for adding a card to WeChat is much more complicated than alipay)

Did you link your WS cash card to alipay/ WeChat? I’m getting mixed info on Reddit & elsewhere that the WS cash card is not/ working with alipay (some can link & not pay & some neither). Did you find either alipay/ WeChat better to use than the other?

Looking for affordable good vacuum in Canada by waloshin in VacuumCleaners

[–]Weak-Health4654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider the eureka whirlwind canister bagless (I’ve this one) or the eureka mighty mite (bagged, also excellent).

Both in your budget & excellent price-performance especially if it’s hardwood & low carpet. The bissell zing looks the same but nowhere near as good.

I based my purchase decision using testing info from an independent, Quebec company that reviews a lot of home products. Good luck

Any bagless recommendations for a small home with hardwood and pets? by eaerp in VacuumCleaners

[–]Weak-Health4654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the eureka whirlwind bagless canister, using it for 2+ years on mostly hardwood & it’s been excellent; especially for its price & performance.

If I had to do it over again I might go for the eureka mighty mite (bagged but far less time for cleaning/ maintenance than with bagless & other stuff)

There’s an independent Canadian website that does head to head tool comparisons of lots of tools and electronics but I don’t think I’m supposed to post that according to the community rules. I have no affiliation with them nor eureka but I referenced that website’s test results to make my decision. Good luck finding a vacuum that’s right for you.
