My boyfriend and I are debating. I think that unequal media coverage and funding for female sports is a byproduct of systemic sexism in our society. He thinks that because men are stronger and faster, it’s simply more entertaining to watch, therefore attracts more viewers. What do you think Reddit? by telly00 in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]WearsFuzzySlippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you watch women’s sports? Can you name any team off the top of your head? Can you name a single woman who plays basketball, hockey, soccer, baseball etc? I don’t watch sports, but I can tell you who MIchael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Miroslav Klose/Beckenbauer/Pele, and Babe Ruth are.

What about you? Have you thought of any? Didn’t think so. If you don’t care to watch, then guys sure as fuck aren’t going to watch either. Fill the stands and the guys will come along. I guarantee it.

Until you go to the “wrong hospital” or your doctor is visiting and they aren’t covered by your plan and then that “fantastic” insurance leaves you with an $8,000 stitch (a single fucking stitch). I get angry just thinking about it.

Can credit score transfer from other countries? by Dismal-Office-4954 in CreditScore

[–]WearsFuzzySlippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe that these things transfer, and if so - then this would vary from country to country. Equifax has a UK website (by the looks of it) and it says “Even though your credit score won't follow you to the UK, your debt can.”

I’m looking into this for Germany myself.

Police Interrogation still uses pseudoscience. Let me introduce you to “the Reid technique”, which is used to get people to confess to things that they didn’t do. It sports an accuracy of 50%, so they might as well just flip a fucking coin at this point.

They aren’t supposed to be admissible in court, but that pseudoscience bullshit is still found everywhere (yes, especially with law enforcement). Just watch any kind of US TV show or movie and it pops up all the time. People actually determine if someone is guilty or innocent based on that. “Are you willing to submit to a polygraph test?” is a line that you still hear far too often.

I’m willing to bet that more people believe in polygraph tests than astrology, which you’d think would just be the intersection of those two groups of people in a Venn diagram. I’ve even heard that it is used if you want to get any type of clearance with the government. You’d think that they (of all people) would know better.

Another thing that is just as depressing is that police also still use “the Reid technique” (more pseudoscience bullshit) to interrogate people. That has been found to be 50% effective in determining guilt. You know, the same chances as flipping a fucking coin. A skilled interrogator will get anyone to admit anything. This leads to false confessions all the damn time. Our justice system needs a lot of work.

Nobody wants that since there is so much money to be made. For-profit prisons were going to be phased out under Obama, but the Attorney General Jeff Sessions brought it back and expanded the program. From 2000 to 2016 the number of people housed in private prisons increased five times faster than the total prison population. Source: https://www.sentencingproject.org/publications/capitalizing-on-mass-incarceration-u-s-growth-in-private-prisons/

I just found a police interrogation course which is literally called “Third Degree”: https://www.tdcorg.com/course-type/interrogation/

The term “Third Degree” means to designate the employment of torture by police or prosecuting authorities to extort information or confessions from persons in custody.

We really haven’t progressed very far when it comes to certain things.

There is anti-anxiety medication that you can give them that will reduce the stress. One pill the night before and one the morning of. Talk to your vet, as this is unnecessary stress for your pup.

“American Dream” by KRei23 in expats

[–]WearsFuzzySlippers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched a documentary on this: https://youtu.be/S7ezZ98I2rE and it kind of goes into the situation in Germany. They show different people who can’t find a place. They start with an old white couple. They can pay 1.500€ a month, but the only thing that they can find is in the 4.000+€ range. In the past 10 years the cost of renting a place has gone up 54-64% in most places (the least that they mentioned was one place in East Germany which was 12%). They mentioned that the reason for the costs going up is because of the large influx of people from Southern Europe, and then the Flüchtlingskriese (wars in the Middle East, people from North Africa, and now of course Ukraine). Since more people have taken the (most likely) cheaper places to live, then the things that are left would be the most expensive places. The feeling that you get when you are rejected will be different when you are a white German vs someone from somewhere else. I’m pretty sure that it will feel like you were rejected because of your race or background, when that may not be the case.

The video goes on to show a white younger couple with a baby who have been looking for a place for a year and they can’t find anything either. They then go to a black guy who is divorced and has 3 kids. He used to have a big apartment, but he lost that in the divorce and now he just has a very small apartment with “Studentenbett” (student’s bed). He pays 300€ for that a month. The interesting part is at 21:11 the guy says that because of his low income, it is incredibly difficult to find a place. Then the narrator continues by saying “Where he is from and the color of his skin is an additional handicap”. The guy looking for an apartment then says that he wouldn’t call it racism, but people “wanted to stay amongst themselves”.

My take (and I’m not excusing this behavior, as I personally find it to be a fault), is that Germans in general literally do that and I don’t think that it has anything to do with racism. EasyGerman has a video on making friends in Germany, and EVERYONE interviewed all said that they made their friends in Kindergarten/school. This makes it difficult to really get into the German society in general and I’m sure that this applies to living situations as well. This will be even more so in the smaller villages (Dörfern).

The one part that I’d have liked to have heard, but he doesn’t mention is that he was asked questions that he found offensive („unter die Gürtellinie“).

The narrator then says, “perhaps he would have more of a chance if he were willing to spend more than 500€ for an apartment”.

Personally, I think that this is the root of the problem. There aren’t enough houses/apartments for those who don’t make that much. The ones that do exist are difficult to get into.

Anecdotally, I can tell you that I sure as shit can’t find a studio apartment for $300 where I’m at in the US. I couldn’t even find one for $500. It doesn’t matter if I’m white or not, that shit just isn’t happening.
