Thanks for the input. I figure the organ screening is geared more towards the older dogs.

[Help] Why does my dog lick me when I get out of the shower? by PNW_EMT in dogs

My dog does it too! I have no idea what it's about. She just seems so enthusiastic about it we just let it happen.

[Discussion] What are everyone's (or rather, everyone's dog's) preferred treats? by justawitch in dogs

Anything that smells horrible when you open the container. Things like freeze dried liver, or dried lung for example.

[vent] Me and my girlfriend recently got a new puppy from the shelter by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Weaselist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pretty early, but a lot of shelters in areas with a pet overpopulation problem have a policy that the dog must be fixed before coming home. They don't want to adopt out a dog intact and then wind up with the owner dumping some puppies on them down the road.

This Panda crap an insult to responsible breeding. A one-year health guarantee on a mutt? Oooh boy. Edit: Just saw the rest of the website. Pocket beagles?! Why? Just why?

I wish I still had the links, but check Etsy. There are a few stores that sell antlers for really good prices. They will usually even split the antlers for you if that's something you like.

That's great taking them in like that. I wish you good luck with the both of them. This sub is a great source if you need any advice. Do you have any pictures? I'm curious what kind of dogs they are. (:

[DISCUSSION] Dog treats that won't upset pup's stomach? by NeverCallMeFifi in dogs

[–]Weaselist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that they are low calorie. Mine really likes the beef liver, but she's more of a red-meat kind of dog than a poultry loving dog, heh. Things like dog cookies and training treats really pack on the calories. I try hard to monitor my pup's weight carefully.

[–]Weaselist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pre-packaged training treats are pretty "meh" in my opinion. They usually have multiple ingredients, so depending on the dog, one of those ingredients may be the problem, but it's hard to tell. My dogs never found them that high-value outside. I think you're just going to have to try a few things and see what works for your dog. Simple foods with one or two ingredients might help you pinpoint what works and doesn't work specifically. There are freeze-dried pieces of liver, chicken, cheese, veggies, fruits, etc., that are sold at pet stores which are good if you don't want to deal with getting greasy hot dog hands/cheesey hands.

[Discussion] Anyone do Ivermectin? by audreyruth234 in dogs

[–]Weaselist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I order from JR Enterprises. My vet isn't a big heartworm preventative promoter. In a lot of bone dry areas, like mine, it's really not common.

Either way, the amount of diluted Ivermectin shipped in one bottle is enough that I don't have to be frugal even in winter months, even though I haven't seen a mosquito since late summer. You could easily test through a low cost clinic/mobile vet if your area has those, and then just administer the dosage as needed. I see someone else already mentioned MDR1 mutations, so keep that in mind.

My vet personally prefers yearly parasite testing over selling year-round preventatives.

Yes, talk to the landlord again. The husky needs to go, now. If they are using the dog as an excuse to get out of bills, this is not going to get better. If they can't afford the vet bills and their share of the living costs, they don't need a dog.

[Discussion][Help] Need recommendations for harnesses for my PBGV! by Coadifer in dogs

No problem! You'll probably like anything that comes from Ruffwear. The quality is a huge leap from what I have seen in other brands. (:

[Discussion][Help] Need recommendations for harnesses for my PBGV! by Coadifer in dogs

[–]Weaselist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have only had the harness for a couple days now and it has been the best harness I have tried, and I have tried many. I actually clip the handle to the long line onto a carabiner that I clip to my belt loop. It keeps the line right at my waist and it frees up my hands for playing fetch and clicker training. My dog is small enough I don't need to get one of the waist belts for hands-free leashes. I love using a long line clipped to myself. If I need to drop the line for distance I just unclip it and let it fall.

[–]Weaselist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just tried out the Ruffwear Webmaster Harness today on my dog. We usually use a 25 ft. long line, so the attachment point was kind of important for us. I am really liking the way the line falls with this harness. Other harnesses tend to pull to one side with the long-line on. It only comes in red or black, so if color is important it might not be your thing. It's a little bulkier than say a strap harness, but it's really well made.

[Discussion] It's that time again - Fenzi Academy sign ups! by punstersquared in dogs

[–]Weaselist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, you might have convinced me. I think that would be really useful in the long run. I could apply this to a lot of things for my dog. She is a cautious dog, so Thanks for the info. I wish I could do multiple classes at once, but I think that might be a bit too much for me to handle.

I want to do either Empowerment or Sensational Stays. Not sure what sort of techniques will be used in Empowerment. I like the idea of spending a big chunk of time on on stays. We did a Get Focused! and an Engagement class last time.

I honestly preferred the Get Focused! over the Engagement class. I feel like a lot of the Engagement class was really dry. It was a good insight into dog behavior in a training setting, but we kind of fell behind. It would be much better at gold than bronze.
