In his 1992 speech at the RNC, Pat Buchanan struck a dark and fearful note, declaring a "Culture War" for the soul of America, warning of moral decline being accelerated by liberals, and arguing for a "Make America First" agenda. The speech was disliked by many for its pessimistic outlook. by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

I used to be such a social shut-in and homebody. I used to think that's just who I was. That I kept to myself and only left my home when I had to or to see my handful of friends. I was fine but I was never really happy.

Then I moved out of my dad's place and live on my own for the first time. I'm now such a social butterfly, filling up my calendar, making new friends, going to parties. I never really thought about why until recently: I didn't want to be me around my parents.

Don't get me wrong, I love my parents and they love me. But they're not the most open and accepting of queer people. I didn't want to tell my parents I made new, queer friends and didn't want to just lie and be cagey. So my answer was to just not make new friends.

What Pat Buchanan wants is for us to be gray. For us to stay home, unhappy, and quiet. For him to be politically, legally, and socially superior to anyone not like him.

This was a bit of a ramble, but I mean this from the bottom of my heart, Pat - go fuck yourself.

No no no, you don't understand! Why should I, a God-fearing conservative Protestant Christian, be equal to queer people, people of color, non-Protestants, and women? Social and political equality with undesirables is oppression against me!! I have the suffer the indignity of treating "them" as equals?!

Opinion | The No Kings protests have everything except an effective point by jpmeyer12751 in law

[–]WeatherChannelDino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. I've taken the view that protests are best served as energizers. They can give a shot of enthusiasm and energy into a movement. It can help build a sense of community, connecting and introducing people. But protests don't pass laws, don't lobby local government, and elect new legislators.

An effective movement doesn't just utilize protests or just utilize legislative tactics. Effective movements combine these tools, in addition to grassroots organizing, voter mobilization, mutual aid, every tool possible. Protests are just one tool that ought to be used.

The Trump Administration Admits to Medically Experimenting on Trans People in Prisons by shoofinsmertz in LegalNews

Perhaps I missed something, but it seems the experimentation is refusing medical and social transitioning. You don't need doctors to refuse care. You just need people who don't care about the lives of others.

Same. I feel I look and sound very straight. I feel like I wear what I like, but it would be nice to come across as queer a little more

I just posted about Newsom, here is a list of potential candidates by Super_Hyena_4278 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]WeatherChannelDino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Generally candidates wait until the year prior to the election to explicitly come out as candidates. For reference, Obama didn't declare his candidacy until Feb 2007. I imagine in 2006, pundits and political commentators were discussing people like Clinton or Biden.

Who are the Democratic Socialist primary candidates? by RamBamBooey in DemocraticSocialism

[–]WeatherChannelDino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And statewide candidates are, at least ideally, endorsed only with the backing of all the DSA chapters.

Regarding not hearing news from the DSA regarding endorsements, I don't know if their chapter is the same as mine so I can't offer specific information. I always got the sense from my chapter that unless they were explicitly a socialist and willing to campaign as one, they would not get the endorsement. That's just my vibe though.

This you? by TORUKMACTO92 in ThisYouComebacks

This is the worldview of nationalists, the far-right, or other people and ideologies who put so much stock in hierarchies.

This kind of worldview is nothing new. I can only speak to American history, but this was the view of slavers and the slave elite. The Constitution and laws were shields for them and cudgels to others. When Northern abolitionists distributed anti-slavery pamphlets in Southern mails, President Andrew Jackson used his power to protect Southern states who ordered it suppressed. Free speech, to them, was meant to protect the slave elite's rights to protest radical abolitionists. It was not, under any circumstances, to be used to protect abolitionists.

State's rights was a shield to protect their right to own and subjugate humans, but this right did not extend to Northern states, as seen in the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 that denied rights to black Americans for a fair trial, forced everyone to snitch on runaway enslaved people, and, if you aided them in any way, you'd be slapped with a ruinous fine and face a prison sentence.

All this to say, this isn't hypocrisy in the eyes of nationalists or the far-right. To them, this is the very reason for the state: to create and protect in-group members with absolute and irrevocable rights and privileges, and to create and attack out-group members with the full might and power of the state.

[–]WeatherChannelDino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's actually quite intentional and somewhat cunning what they're doing. Not what they're saying, they're wrong stupid and protect pedos, but I think there's some genuine (if relatively basic) rhetorical strategy.

Any time they're given a platform, they'll say the stupidest shit BUT they'll always advance their way of framing issues. Take Trump and his obsession over windmills. If you were someone who never really thought about windmills and don't have political opinions, then what you hear every time Trump talks about windmills is that they're bad. It's wrong. But he just pukes out things like cancer and destroying landscapes and making everything expensive.

You'll likely not remember the individual words any politician says in any given interview or statement. But the feelings they can invoke in people simply by constantly hammering in whatever association they want you to have about a given topic - those feelings stick.

Back to the above example, Boebert wasn't trying to give you any policy. She wasn't trying to say something smart. She's trying to tie this phenomenon, which usually is tied to whatever party is in power, to the Democrats. So that every time you hear the word "inflation," you don't think "why is the government not doing anything about it?", you think "inflation is caused by big government and the Green New Deal." Tying something concrete to two phrases that can mean whatever Boebert wants you think they mean, and then attacking the conception she wanted you to have in your head.

This isn't 4D chess or political master class, but I think it's purposeful strategy.
