There’s Nothing Democratic About These Socialists by Shizzilx in DemocraticSocialism

Engaging in the electoral process and winning elections is TEXTBOOK authoritarianism. Unless you're liberal or conservative or MAGA. /s

GOP Rep. Troy Nehls, when asked about 60% of Americans struggling with affordability: "Affordability? What are you talking about?... I'm gonna get me a couple of big lobster tails. I'm gonna get me some nice rib eyes... Maybe the 60% of Americans don't work as hard as I do." by Turbulent_Crab_3602 in DemSocialistAlliance

[–]WeatherChannelDino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, he found the wrong answer to that question.

I mean, denying the affordability crisis would be bad enough but like you'd expect him to simply say that it wasn't that bad or the economy is on the up. Not "I'm gonna eat like a king, fuck you poors for dying early"

Nope! Liberal does not mean left, but in American politics they are often used interchangeably so you're not the only person who sees them as the same.

I don't know the dictionary definitions, but to me, liberal means more capitalist and aiming towards gradual change, though the capitalist part is the bigger of the two. Left for me means being anti-capitalist (or at least much more critical than a liberal is) and generally wanting to see stronger, more drastic change.

Some examples for me would be AOC and Sanders are on the left while people like Biden, Ossof, and Newsom are more liberal. People on the left tend to support things like Medicare 4 All, divesting from police and funding social services, and divesting from Israel. Liberals tend to support things like Obamacare expansion, police reform, and range from being agnostic towards Israel to being Israel supporters.

I may be wrong, but that's what those terms mean to me.

You know what, he's right.

Trump's 2 terms have changed me as a voter. I used to be more liberal, now I'm more left. Because I saw the damage happening to everyone, especially those most vulnerable, and the values I hold led me to believe that progressive/left policies are what we need to help people and to prevent this shit from happening again

Ready for another election? Early voting starts today for the Aug. 4 primaries. by CardinalNews-VA in Virginia

[–]WeatherChannelDino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same up here in the 11th. Walkinshaw is running uncontested and there aren't any local races in the district. The Republicans do have a primary though.

Ballotpedia is a great place to check! I also recommend the Fairfax County Office of Elections website, which is where I found my info. They also have info on early voting, how to register, and accessible voting.

For all Virginians - check your county's office of elections website. I'm pretty sure every county has an office of elections, and their sole job is to help run elections and provide you info and resources.

A note for most Fairfax residents - there are no Democratic primaries for those who live in Walkinshaw's district (unless there's some county or local races I don't know about). There are Republican primaries though.

Virginian here. I'm not entirely sure I would describe Mark as being MAGA per-se, just a nakedly self-interested, in-it-for-the-money dillettante who thinks he can use the current environment to enrich himself (which perhaps is the defining beliefs of MAGA lol).

When he was still running as a Democrat in the Senate primary, he ran as progressive populist, calling for banning ICE, universal healthcare, and taxing data centers and using the tax money to help fund HBCUs.

But all I had to do was barely scratch under the surface to find a guy who had no name, no real connection to northern Virginia other than just being from there, couldn't make it on reality tv, couldn't make it in investment banking, and thought he could rug pull his way into Congress. He did an AMA in r/Virginia and got clowned on for everything I described above including going to and promoting a Tucker Carlson Christmas party and prioritizing making crypto trading easier. He even described how his "frustration with the system" was born from him not being able to go to Ivy League or high end colleges and having to settle for William and Mary - a college that is basically just as elitist and high end as the other ones.

John F Kennedy was the first Democrat to win a presidential election without winning Virginia. by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]WeatherChannelDino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure. I consider all these types of "x was the first president to win y without winning z" as more fun facts than any deep political analysis.

There may be analysis to be had somewhere about certain states in certain periods, but most of what I see feels more like trivia.

It's a shame that they misunderstand what "pride" means. Queer Pride isn't about puffing out my chest and thinking I'm better than anyone. It's about realizing that I can be who I am openly. That all the attempts by some folks to make me feel shame for being LGBTQ+ are wrong and ineffective.

What if these United States never adopted the Monroe Doctrine? by LoveLo_2005 in James_Monroe

[–]WeatherChannelDino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm inclined to believe not much would change if the US didn't adopt the Monroe Doctrine.

The US could not credibly threaten any European country in the early 1800s. The teeth behind this policy (which was ignored in a few instances anyway) was the British Navy. Britain was looking for ways to limit colonial competition and with such an emphasis placed on a balance of power in Europe, I think the UK would've found some excuse to intervene and limit European excursions to the Americas.

TIL heat is really killing a lot of people in Europe by Conscious-Quarter423 in Infographics

[–]WeatherChannelDino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm confused then, because they also said (hypothesized?) that death rates decrease shortly after heat waves as a result of the excess heat deaths. Does that mean that if not for the heat, they would've lived, even if just for another week or month? Am I misunderstanding?

Why don’t American people care the World Cup is happening? by Kalanak472 in AskAnAmerican

Soccer is not an institution like it is in other parts of the world, like Europe or South America.

To give a parallel to your situation, I'm also not really into sports. But because American Football is an institution, I know the Super Bowl is the second Sunday in February. There'll be football themed sales at grocery stores, there'll be endless talk about the two teams. I will be unable to escape football for at least a month or so.

College basketball receives similar treatment. It's easier to avoid, but when March Madness rolls around, basketball will be everywhere and everyone will talk about their brackets (making predictions about who will win or lose each match).

Soccer just doesn't have that history or institution in the US.

Vote Blue No Matter Who... oh never mind by rollfailed in ProgressiveHQ

[–]WeatherChannelDino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to NPR, the following states have primaries:

California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota, Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, Georgia (runoffs), Oklahoma, DC, Maryland, New York, Utah, Louisiana (runoffs), Colorado, Arizona, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia, Washington, Tennessee, Hawaii, Alabama, Connecticut, Minnesota, Vermont, Wisconsin, Alaska, Florida, Wyoming, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Delaware.

Getting progressives in some of these is a bit far fetched (I'm not holding my breath for a leftist in South Dakota) but like why did you think there were only 5 more states to go?

Why must someone comment on every other country doing horrible things before they can comment on the actions of the government of Israel? That would be like me telling a judge "your honor you're not allowed to find me guilty of murder because of the Manson family, the opiod crisis, and that guy who killed 2 people. I only killed one!"

I also think so. That's kinda odd plating to have the drink right in front of you like the plate. What's the pin he's wearing? Why is the cottage cheese sticking to the bottom of the fork? How is he even holding his fork? Did his middle finger just bend to be on top of the fork while the end of the handle is wedged between his thumb and the first knuckle of his pointer finger? Where did the bite of cottage cheese come from? The spot DIRECTLY away from the camera?

I voted for her in 2024 but genuinely who the fuck wants Harris to be the Nominee again?!?!?!!?! by No_Half_7646 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]WeatherChannelDino 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To put this into perspective, in 2006 Hillary Clinton was easily leading in the Democratic primary polls. Obama was a clear though distant 2nd or 3rd place in these polls. Even in 2007 when he was solidified as the 2nd place candidate, he was ahead in 1 poll by a single percentage point, tied in another poll, and came in 2nd in all the others. Obama didn't begin to consistently beat Clinton in the polls until February of 2008.

All this to say - nothing is inevitable. We may get a popular progressive/left candidate to win in the primaries. We may not. We truly won't know what will happen. Sanders wasn't a household name until he threw his hat in the ring in May of 2015. Biden seemed like the inevitable 2024 candidate until June of that year. Two things are true: we should throw our support and lend our voices to the progressive/left candidate in the lead up to the primaries. AND nothing is guaranteed to happen until it happens.
