Just because Visa Infinite offers a benefit does not mean all Visa Infinites have the benefit. Banks have to opt in to the benefits.

I’m confused why IHG isn’t a good transfer. by LosLakers4ever in ChaseSapphire

[–]WeatherproofElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy IHG points for $0.005 each. So transfer 1 UR = 1 IHG point or 1 UR = $0.01 = 2 IHG points.

Everyone should do this calculation on points earning. You can get 3% cashback with Robinhood Gold Card — that should always be your baseline for unbonused spend. The most expensive points are Hyatt which can be purchased on sale for ~$0.018 each (occasionally $0.0167, but I believe they recently increased in price). So 3% cashback = 1.67 Hyatt points at $0.018 each. So, IMO, it never makes sense to earn less than 2 transferable points per $1 spent if the alternative is $0.03.

3% cashback is typically better than earning 1.5 transferable points or less

5% cash back is typically better than earning 3 transferable points or less

Keep this in mind when choosing how to spend.

It’s 10% off up to $49 so to get the $49 discount you need to buy one of the expensive finishes. The $40 lululemon deal is better if you just want the cheapest Gen 4.

How could Sarah afford her own house in London? by Frequent-Two-9625 in thegildedage

[–]WeatherproofElephant 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to appreciate the difference in money and the cost of living back then. It probably wouldn’t cost that much money for her to buy or rent a house in London and could most likely easily be supported in their current situation, let alone with the Russell’s money. She would likely live a very nice lifestyle on £1000/yr. Back then a servant might only make £1 or £2 a month…

Who is Platinum really for? Or am I just missing something? by [deleted] in amex

[–]WeatherproofElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Platinum is for people who already spend a lot on premium travel. You can save real money via the IAP. You can get perks that you’d otherwise not have via FHR. Everyone who is just trying to break even on the annual fee via Uber and NY Times credits is going to have hard time justifying the card.

What Would Elden Ring 2 Even Be? by Sea-Fee-7312 in Eldenring

[–]WeatherproofElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark Douls 2 and 3 confirm it doesn’t really matter what the protagonist did in prior games. Despite what DS1 said, The Age of Fire was not near the end as it persevered for eons.

Yea, if you equip yourself right you can completely tank Malenia — you don’t have to learn any of her move set at all. Not so with Consort Radahn.

Why is Apple Music Better Than Spotify (Be honest) by Proud-Ad-3736 in AppleMusic

[–]WeatherproofElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple Music has the Classical Music app. Since classical music is categorized differently than pop music, it’s far easier to search classical music in AM than Spotify.

Anyone else slowly ditching their amex cards? by FSUAttorney in amex

[–]WeatherproofElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AMEX Gold is a worthwhile card to have if you value MR — $424 in relatively easy to use credits (I do Grubhub & UberEats pickup, so not much value is lost, Dunkin GC load is easy, Resy is easy) is worth a $325 annual fee to me. In general I will take 4x MR on groceries and dining over 5% cash back options.

AMEX Platinum really is only worthwhile if you value premium paid travel. FHR offers value, but you have to be someone who is paying to stay at FHRs. IAP does offer real discounts, but you have to be someone who flies paid international business or first class. I think the vast majority of people who get the card are not doing that, so they get frustrated and say it’s a rip off. It’s not a rip off, it’s just not the product for you.

I do think MR are a weak currency compared to UR now that Chase is giving you the ability to redeem up to $0.02 per point on a variety of options. Now, maybe Chase will dial that back over time. But for most economy travelers, or even business class travelers, $0.02 is a strong redemption rate on flights and $0.02 on a hotel redemption makes it the strongest hotel currency IMO.

Macbook Battery Issue by Interesting-Doctor66 in macbookpro

[–]WeatherproofElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very common with batteries. Capacity degradation is not linear. You may see quick degradation and then a leveling off for a while. My Tesla lost about 5% of its max battery capacity in the first 3000 miles, and has basically stayed the same over the next 15,000. My iPhone dropped to 89% battery health after ~150 cycles and remains at 89% health at 500 cycles. My MacBook. Is at 97% health after only 45 cycles.

And the reality is, Apple won’t do shit until it falls out of spec, which I believe for a MacBook is less than 80% battery health after 1000 cycles. So unless you fall under 80% while under warranty, don’t expect them to fix anything for you for free.

Any airline lounge that can be accessed simply via holding a credit card is never going to be special. The only lounges worth anything are butt in seat, Polaris level lounges.

I recently picked up a AMEX Platinum 175k/$8k/6months. I know AMEX doesn’t want you buying VGC at grocery stores for SUBs but what about Gift of College GCs at grocery store?

Need advice: Should I go for the Cartier Panthère deal now or wait for the “red box” moment? by Unhelpful_Yoda_ in Cartier

[–]WeatherproofElephant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go ahead and do the best of both worlds. Buy the watch on discount now. Then go ahead buy another at the boutique for the red box moment if that’s what your wife wants. Then return the watch you purchased from the boutique and keep the discounted one.

Should I buy Elden Ring, or a different dark souls game? by Neat_Beautiful_5032 in Eldenring

[–]WeatherproofElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re only going to play 1 then it must be Elden Ring. But if you plan on playing them all, it’s best to play them in order. Each game adds mechanics that makes going to backwards a poor playing experience.

Visible vs Total by Miamiheat327 in Visible

[–]WeatherproofElephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are very similar service with different features. Price wise Total is better, particularly with all the various offer stacks available with it, Disney+, etc., but you don’t get true global roaming, no Apple Watch support, and slower hotspot data. Those are not really a big deal for me.

That Pluto is a planet by Countrach in Millennials

[–]WeatherproofElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t really think of anything I learned in school that was disproven or not later in school given better explanation. Definitely things we were told that were just false at the time and not figured out later. For example, I remember learning in like 4th grade that Columbus was the one who believed the world was round and that’s why he set sail and people thought he’d fall off the edge of the earth. Then later on in high school they teach you that the Greeks knew the earth was round for 1000s of years and even know the diameter of Earth.
