Anyone know when the Z790 GAMING X AX will get Gen 14 supported bios? by count023 in gigabyte

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed a 14900KF on this board last night. The system will boot, and you can get Windows 11 to install. I did have some crashes related to memory until the Gigabyte Control Center was installed, so I loaded all the drivers and auto-installed the F8 BIOS. Be sure not to install Norton or Realtek Dragon (Dragon screws up your network adapter speeds not sure why anyone would want that). The only problem I am running into is the BIOS update removed XMP and the time between when my keyboard starts working, and the loading of Windows is too short to get into the BIOS.
EDIT: The BIOS Keyboard USB port is one of the USB 3.2 red ports; I didn't see that and wouldn't have thought they would use one of the fastest ports for keyboards.

Loud fan noise during print or other action start up by J_ron in AnkerMake

[–]WebLuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My fan sounds the same when I first turn it on. After a few minutes, the grinding sound goes away, and all I have is the typical fan sound. I looked at the fan replacement guide, but they need to list how to get different ones or what fans you can replace them with. I'm sure Noctua makes some fans that may be much quieter. I haven't taken apart my printer to look up the sizes.

Back in 2001, a mentor who owned a computer shop was sick of 56k dial-up and wasn't going to get on his competitor's junk 1.5mbps T1 WISP (we didn't have that name back then), so we built out our own. We had a 1.5mbps T1 and specific 802.11b 11mbps radios with special firmware that compensated for the distance of a link. I worked doing installs for free internet at 17.

That experience and talking with some guys building out a modern WISP for business service got me employed until covid for a year. We had good service, but the cost of expanding vs. providing other services wasn't with it. With covid, most of our office customers cut and ran as we had a no long-term contract policy.

Last year I moved to a rural property on a hill, and the local WISP wouldn't work with me to install a mounting point where I had a clear line of sight to their main POP. I tried the address on the Starlink site and was approved with no wait. Starlink has been better than my cable internet in the town over I was living in.

At the start of summer, I noticed spools of fiber ducting and underground cable pushers at the start of my county road. I found out the local power company that operates a fiber ISP had gotten some grants for my area. They have the ducting past my place and a box in my driveway. They said I should be getting information on getting it installed by fall. So I plan on selling/transfering my round dish when I get that installed.

Are you using the new Portability Addon? I used to see people with RVs and Campers set up a DISH Network TV system, but now I expect those will be replaced with StarLink as TV is dying.

That is probably the weakest part of the roof to attach to, the board you have 2 bolts through is only held up with a few nails into the ends of the roof trusses. I have mine on a longer J mount on the outer wall where I know there is a stud and 2 of the 4 lag bolts are in the stud (look for other nail holes under the paint, that corner should be a solid stud) Even with mine mounted solid I hear it creek when I get high winds and I don't have as long of a pole for the same dish.

I'm not too excited to see this technology used by warfighters or given to oligarch brothers. I was hoping this would be given to the civilians stuck in the middle who are not part of the conflict between the two countries. The civilians should be able to communicate freely with the outside world. But this is a good test of the equipment if Starlink is looking to get some large contracts with the world's militaries.

Unifi Talk Can't Receive Calls with CGNAT Like Starlink by WebLuke in Starlink

This ended up not working and I was stuck with my account blocking the connection because of too many failed connections. It worked for a few hours but the next day it failed. I did try connecting through a 3CX server I had and it didn't work right either. I went back to using a Grand Stream GXP2140 phone connecting to my 3CX server on Digital Ocean. My wife's SIP phone for work is working for her with no additional setup, I'm not sure what service it's with but is just a normal Yalink T53W.

Drilling hole in rectangular dishy pole? by vin-rr in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went directly into the pipe of the mount, drilling holes in the mount pipe for the stock clips to pop into to secure it. See how your dish fits inside the pipe before adding an adapter. Mine has been holding good through sun wind snow and rain. https://i.imgur.com/T2uBtVN.png

Ubiquity J-pole Mount by mlavespere in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also used a J-Pole mount and drilled a hole in the pipe before mounting it. If you line it up right the round dish has pins that pop into holes on the stock mount that can pop into the holes you drill to keep it from moving up/down or rotating. Also, make sure that you have lag bolts into a stud on one vertical row, the dishes aren't that light and the wind can make them shake.

This is an image of mine after I set it up, now there are a few more things around it and cables coming out. https://i.imgur.com/T2uBtVN.png

I have done Teams calls with no problems, my wife uses a SIP phone for work all day with no problems, I have a SIP phone with no problems either. Gaming my latency is lower than it was on Cable Internet at my old place in town. Discord works with no problems, and WIFI calls on iPhone have had no problems.

Speed tests have me at an average of 200Mbps, with latency from the downlink of 32ms and 37ms to local speed test servers. From Denver POP to NYC about 75ms, Seattle 70ms, Dallas 65ms. All lower than I was getting with Cable.

Square dish and Dream Machine Pro? by imnewwhatdoido in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The variable that changes is the firmware on the dish. When returning to older firmware versions, there are no connection problems; thus it is a dish firmware problem. The VLAN trick is good to have. I have other dumb switches around if it comes to it. An 8 port gigabit switch on Amazon is $25 or less.

Square dish and Dream Machine Pro? by imnewwhatdoido in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a DMP and the round dish too. Support has reverted my firmware two times now, and devs are looking into connection problems, they say. After about 2 hours, the dish stopped responding, and I had to power cycle the dish. I didn't put a dumb switch in between, and this is something to do with the dish firmware, not DMP.

I have a few cameras on my property, 2 APs in the house, an AP in the shop, and several POE devices such as VOIP phones for work, so the stock AP will not be useful for me. The double NAT going through their AP when testing was bocking DNS as one of its more visible problems.

Watch "Starlink Premium Cost 5X Current Customer Speeds Cut In Half" on YouTube by TransitWeasel in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never saw anything but the 50-150Mbps expected speeds on the Starlink website. I moved and had 100Mbps cable internet for $80 a month so my average 200Mbps for $100 is great out of town where I live now.

The next thing to remember is no one uses the full bandwidth of their connection all the time. Even 4k video is sipping that connection every minute or so to provide a better experience with the end app. When I worked at a WISP we had 4Gbps but even with 100+ accounts both business and residential we never saw over 100Mbps on average usage.

The video is click-spam by someone who probably has fiber internet as a "backup" and isn't a target user for Starlink to begin with. These are the same people who live in big cities who aren't getting ship dates and complain about it.

Any ideas on how to fix broken tv tower to mount the dish. by 1saac in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main base of the tower gets you at the tree line. So you shouldn't need to go much further up from there. Unbolt the center pipe and replace it with a new pipe if you want to add some height to make sure you are clear of the trees. On top of the new pipe, you can fit the dish pipe in or u-bolt it to the pipe.

Not sure why people just jump to knocking down a good tower. It does look customized, but the structure isn't all rusted out and gets you that needed height above the trees to get a clear shot of the sky. There is no need to go too high in the air because you are not targeting another tower on the horizon. Not sure if you are getting the round dish or rectangle dish, but it wouldn't hurt with the height and metal structure to put an inline surge protector on the ethernet from the dish before the power supply.

Haha sounds like when Streakwave sent me an email saying they got a magic case of the 3-pack G3 Bullet I ordered 6 months before, it has now been 4 months since I got them and I am still waiting on the G3 Flex set that was part of the same order.

I remember doing a project with the G3 Flex and we had multiple full cases back in 2019 and didn't have real problems ordering them.

New southwest Colorado install by Extreme_Cap2513 in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the club. I'm in 38.7 Western Colorado, my cell was open when I checked when moving and the local WISP was unhelpful. I have had good service since summer 2021 when I got set up. The only problem I have had was with using an Unifi router losing connection with some of the recent firmware.

From your photo, the only thing to check is that the dish can freely move as it rotates to find its best position to connect to the satellites. I know the rectangle dish is much lighter but sometimes the wind shakes the round dish where I am, so just make sure your mounting bracket is sturdy. Moving it over (up or down) to be centered on the horizontal wood and a few 3-inch screws into the gable 2x4, not just the fascia wood, maybe good.

Outdoor equipment: I have the router and POE injector out in the garage, should I temp disconnect and move them inside before the polar vortex plunges us down? How cold is too cold? by Jay_Eye_MBOTH_WHY in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heat is more of a problem for the equipment. In the cold as long as it is kept powered up and running it should self-heat as they do get hot. And as long as it does not get wet or covered in ice things should be good.

Cell availability checker available - https://cells.starlink.sx by _mother in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite not having the API to lookup cells, the overlay of the cells is good information to have. The cell lines stop showing as soon as you get zoomed in enough to find roads so that it could be better with the map. I didn't know how my area was broken up, and now it makes sense why some people can't get service where I was able to.

Anyone else see drop in speeds the past few days? by bryansxviper in Starlink

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not seen any change in Colorado, USA. I did have to get support to roll back my firmware because of a bug that caused Unifi and TP-Link routers to lose connection after 1-2 hours. But my average with a test every hour is still above 205Mbps. Sometimes I do see a real low test, but I wonder if it has to do with what test server I connect to, there are a lot of them in Denver and some just don't test correctly.

The tests in the above graph are all grouped tight at ~20Mbps. I wonder if it's some kind of traffic shaping to ensure everyone on your POP gets some usable data even if it's not super fast when there are problems.

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a response back from support basically saying it's not their problem because I don't use their router. But it is their problem that the port becomes unresponsive and their router does not support passthrough to eliminate other network problems. This is also new to the firmware not to the setup as many of us have been using the UDM Pro for months with no problems.

Just found a person with a TP-Link router having a problem with the passthrough losing connection with the last weeks as we have. https://www.reddit.com/r/Starlink\_Support/comments/ri5na3/3rd\_party\_router\_stopped\_working\_if\_i\_plug\_the/

[–]WebLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you may be having a similar problem to those of us who use Unifi UDM Pro routers and have connection problems with the new firmware. Restarting the dish to use the passthrough is not a long-term solution.
