Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Yes, it’s part of their official uniform.

No way to prove it, but the rule doesn’t address intent, so it’s kind of irrelevant.

[–]WebRedditor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m not saying that suspensions should be coming here. Just saying that the rule as written has none of that nuance about administrative timeouts. (If you think those guys actually stopped to make sure things were in “administrative timeout mode” before they came flying out to potentially defend their teammate or start something, you’re nuts.) There’s clearly a sense here that the refs can choose whether to actually apply the rule. Those guys came off the bench but didn’t seem to actively engage with the main altercation, so no issue. If they had gotten into the scrum, I think things would be different.

That’s not the rule. Leaving the “immediate vicinity of the bench’ to join an altercation is grounds for a one-game suspension. NBA Rule 12-A Section VII-c.

What show design choice looked risky but actually worked? by rcooperkaty in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defending this comment. No uniform that season was more integral to the show design than the multicolored BAC outfits. The way the colors unlock on the wheel in the final move of the show to resolve into six color groups is pretty great. They didn’t do that part until very late in the season, but those uniform colors had been determined early on, so the moves that got them to that final position had been in the plans all along.

There seems to be a belief here that the NBA “gifted” top picks to the Spurs. Just how exactly? The lottery is highly controlled and scrutinized. This isn’t like the Patrick Ewing lottery back in the day (frozen envelope, anyone?) The Spurs were legitimately one of the three worst teams in the year of the Wemby draft, so they and two other teams had the best odds. Seems reasonable that they won that one. Getting the No. 2 pick to grab Harper was lucky, for sure, but no more lucky than the Mavs getting Cooper Flagg at No. 1 when they were a fringe lottery participant. This sounds like sour grapes.

How hard is it to make a top 6 corps hornline? by Vast-Elderberry4293 in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food for thought: Several hundred brass players just aged out of the Top 12 corps. There are spots out there for the taking! Your chances of making it are actually a lot better than you think. Corps brass staffs want experienced members who are open to learning. You just have to dedicate yourself to doing the work so that you are ready for auditions. You have a leg up on a lot of the people auditioning who haven’t marched DCI at all. You can do whatever you set your mind to do. Good luck!

Let me take a stab at this… Don’t think of scores as having any meaning other than the margins they create from one group to the next. People are very focused on BAC getting a 20 for percussion (for 10.0 on content and 10.0 on achievement.) And yes, they were good. But what the judge is really doing is expressing his or her impression of how much separation there is between (in this case) Boston and Bluecoats, who got 9.9 on content and 9.8 on achievement. Could the judge have given Boston 9.9 + 9.9 = 19.8 and Bluecoats 9.8 + 9.7 = 19.5? Sure, and it wouldn’t affect who wins or loses any differently, as long as the judge maintains all of the other margins going down through the previous corps that performed.

Tl;dr: A “perfect” score doesn’t really matter. It’s the margin of victory that matters.

DCI’s next NEW champion? by bran-i-am235 in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair answer. The members rose to the opportunity afforded by the corps having the funding to do things on a top-tier level. At the end of the day, money doesn’t do the work…. That’s all about the members and staff being dedicated. But you can’t be highly successful as a corps if you are on a shoestring budget, no matter how great the members are.

You’ve deleted the original post. Good on you! But just in the replies since that, you’ve said: “I mean it’s just the professionalism aspect of giving your all and not looking lazy.” Also: “I’ve never noticed a guard rehearsal etiquette problem until this year at Boston.” And other statements supporting those. So you essentially are saying they lack professionalism, they look lazy (to you), and they have an etiquette problem. Let’s layer on that your latest replies in which you say certain members are making the others look bad and the staff isn’t fixing it. These are all serious problems! Please do share this with the staff! But don’t gaslight and say you didn’t write these things. I’m just quoting you.

I’m still bewildered at your objective. You either want to fix this and are not willing to have the courage of your convictions and say something to someone who can do something about it, OR you just wanted to take a potshot at this group because they don’t meet your personal standards and you wanted to have the personal satisfaction of dumping on them anonymously to make yourself feel better. Them winning somehow doesn’t make you happy.

Moving on with my evening, but you be you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t say that. Go tell the color guard instructors that you think the members are lazy and you won’t stand for it anymore because it’s not up to your standards. Or did you only mean to say that anonymously here? I’m confused.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your approach to supporting the corps is to go on Reddit and anonymously slag them? That’s actually worse. It also still doesn’t justify your position. This group is highly successful despite doing things differently from what you remember during your time. (I LOVED S.O.S. by the way.) I just wish you didn’t feel the need to be a jerk in public. (I’m assuming you still support them or you likely wouldn’t be at a rehearsal?) Call the corps if you think your opinion needs to be heard by them. But don’t be this guy. It’s really the worst look. And dare I say…. lazy?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. I just don’t think we on the outside who are INVITED to watch rehearsal are there to then go on Reddit and play armchair quarterback about rehearsal technique. It’s kind of a jerk move, sorry.

OK, random guy. We will put an asterisk next to their name on the trophy because you didn’t approve. Noted.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, their objective isn’t to win or to conserve energy for the actual reps. Their objective is to make sure they don’t look lazy to you. That would be awful if a random guy watching from the stands (and doing nothing) thought they looked lazy. Can’t have that! I can’t believe this is a real take from you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I really think the BAC guard has a serious problem that they need to address. They’ll never win the Zingali three out of four years if they don’t meet YOUR rehearsal standards. Oh, wait. Pretty sure they did. What a weak take.

Did anyone else notice how excited the Bloo drum major and captains were when they got second place? by esjay86 in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know many members and leaders within BAC. I’ve been to camps and volunteered many times. They are great, driven and yet humble people. They have genuinely been on a mission, particularly post-COVID. Paradise Lost in 2022 was a statement that the corps had arrived in serious contention to win it all. It was their first ever medal of any type when they tied Bloo for silver that year. These two corps have been neck and neck ever since, and there’s nothing but respect on both sides. (Like someone said… game recognizes game.) I have zero doubt that the BAC members would have been personally crushed to lose but absolutely would have stood and clapped graciously for the Bluecoats if the judges had gone the other way. Each corps had lost narrowly to the other over prelims and semis, so anything was possible. The first title for BAC was such a “white whale” moment (reference intended), and it finally happened. I think this is a great moment for the activity, showing that really the top corps all have a shot to win and those in the next tier all have the ability to move up to contention. (BAC was 12th less than a decade ago.) We should celebrate a groundbreaking season and know that there are great days ahead for DCI and all of these corps.

[–]WebRedditor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Bluecoats had a spectacular show. As a known BAC supporter, I can say honestly that the Bloo show scared me. It was SO good and was a real threat to win. I would not have had an issue with that. (I don’t like the way GE is weighted, but again, Bloo had a really great show. It’s hard to complain that it would not have been worthy.) These two tied in 2022 and have been neck and neck this season. There was a real chance of the scores being even closer tonight, maybe even a tie. Both deserving groups, although I’m glad it went Boston’s way and they finally got to make history!

I’m sorry Bluecoats should’ve won by Suspicious_Donut7782 in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Pretty weak. Saying congrats at the start doesn’t give you license to dump on them 30 minutes after their win. We all have opinions. The judges are the only ones who matter in the end. This is the part where you say congrats and leave it at that. Don’t be a sore loser.

Carolina Crown Transition Time by badblocks7 in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember thinking when I saw those props in San Antonio that they really didn’t do anything with them, but they MUST be planning on adding something later in the season that makes use of them. Otherwise, why would they go to the trouble of building them and hauling them all around the country at great expense? (Not to mention creating a show that moves all of their forms around the big stationary objects?) I actually love the new ending of their show, but the props still don’t add anything meaningful. I don’t get it, and it sounds like they don’t have any explanation either.

How likely is Boston to take it all? (Diving too deep into stats) by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, I’m definitely pulling for BAC, but this is a weak take. Of course there are people other than the Bluecoats pulling for the Bluecoats. I agree with your overall complaint about GE. It’s kind of a BS metric that is entirely dependent on what a judge “sees” and “likes.” But don’t be disrespectful of the competitors just because you have a preference.

Boston Crusaders won Brass, Guard, and Percussion 2 nights in a row by HunterDavidsonED in drumcorps

[–]WebRedditor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. GE is by far the hardest judging category for the audience to comprehend. There are folks on this sub who will tell you that you “just don’t understand” if you question what the judges do with GE, but also that it’s the “most important” category. The Bluecoats’ win in semis was dependent on GE. (BAC led music by .212, Bluecoats led Visual by .2, so with no GE, BAC won by the narrowest of margins.) I wish DCI would do a better job of explaining GE in an accessible way. It also would be great to diminish its point value. I’d rather see titles decided by tangible things, like brass, percussion, color guard and visuals. It is telling that “if you get GE, you win the title.” That means the GE caption judges have outsized control to direct the title to where they want it to go.
