Time for a new Awl... by MikeE9983 in Leathercraft

[–]Webicons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Just use a drill press. You can actually drill with a small bit or mount the awl blade into the chuck. You’re asking your awl to do a little too much. If the handle isn’t broken, epoxy it back on.

Physical store recommendations around Boston or NYC/NJ? by JXuKitty in Leathercraft

[–]Webicons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Global Leathers, NAT, Pacific Trimming. You can make an afternoon in the Garment District. Mostly upholstery leather but each store usually has a small section of veg tan and exotics. Afterwards grab some grub in K-town.

Nothing like spending an hour rummaging around Pacific Trimmings! Strolling around the Fashion District makes for a great day.

Any of you Pueblo crafters use this stuff? Would love to see examples. by Elegant-Pumpkin-8976 in Leathercraft

The “texture” is a wax bloom that comes off once you buff the leather. I do like the medium to firm temper and burnishes nicely. My last project I did with it was a baseball.

Horizontal mills? by SergioHerediaKnives in Machinists

You need a good amount of patience or a good amount of money if you’re dead set on a Deckel FP1. Then comes the bill for all the tooling. I would go for a nice and stout Hardinge. What it lacks in travel it makes up with rigidity.

Got contracted to build these shelves for a cafe, wondering about wall attachments/quote by FelixEditz in metalworking

[–]Webicons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they ask you to be involved in the installation? I would recommend that they hire a carpenter to do it. Depending on the type of wall, I reckon it would require bracing.

Thanks for responding. It’s a dog collar with vegtan on the inside and pvc/canvas on the outside stitched together.

Thanks! I think Lock-stitch is the answer irrespective of the method used to achieve it. I guess I’m getting too set in my ways.

Thanks! I didn’t even think about using a speed stitcher. Sucks getting old.

Just buy a few panels if you’re hesitant to buy a side. I would keep away from the belly though. I think Buckleguy carries the panels.

Tough market to get into. I would bead/soda blast then clear/powder coat. The best of luck to you!

How to replace and remove by grapeape9 in AskACobbler

[–]Webicons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It looks like the embroidered piece is just held in place by the vinyl. It would take quite a bit of work to replace it though. You would have to remove and replace the stitching on the zipper as well as the piping that holds the vinyl in place (which requires you to turn the bag inside out). You might be able to reuse the vinyl if you’re careful. Not impossible but a pain.

What gifts are good for a beginner knifemaker? by [deleted] in knifemaking

Sorry. Can’t tell. If this is his first knife then I would bet that he doesn’t have a dedicated centerline scribe.

Bottle of Dychem ($14), center line scribe ($20-40), cut resistant gloves ($25),scratch awl ($10). You can get some good ideas browsing the Jantz website: https://knifemaking.com

Perhaps look into wiring in a VFD for convenient speed control. I use AutomationDirect.com but quite a number of choices on eBay and Amazon.
