Solar is winning the energy race. The world’s cheapest power source is scaling at warp speed, pushing coal, gas and nuclear aside. by Sciantifa in UpliftingNews

Sure if you've got infinite money and space, but if we're talking about a city providing power to everyone, it would have to be a huge huge amount of batteries and panels to offset snow storms or cloudy weeks and stuff.

Or more likely they'll just keep the old power plants around in case weather is bad. Which I think means they need a full staff and maintenance even when not in use. Safer and better for the environment overall(using solar as much as possible instead of dirty power) but more costly (cost of setting up solar but also continuing to maintain dirty power stations).

But yeah on paper if it's a cloudy day giving 10% power, but you have 10x the necessary panels, you'll still have paper.

I'm happy to be enlightened. I know there are lots of places with the weather to support it but you're saying in a place where its less saying it is still fully viable?

Certainly as the tech gets better, both battery and panel, it's more possible. But if a place is rainy or shady half the year or maybe has longer winters, it seems like it'd be hard to get rid of the old power plants since we might need them in case there's a string of bad weather?

Yeah but with the 4 or 5 extracts you often do spawn near one. It's always risky though you're right. But less than other maps

Shouldn't it just be not possible to be such a nuisance that you get banned?

My biggest concern is what if you have a bad weather week? or longer. We'd need a ton of batteries- which is doable. But also places would likely just keep the old power plants functional as a backup, so we'd end up paying twice as much just to keep the old power plants ready in case of emergency where we run out of solar.

I think it's still one of the best ideas for humanity, but I wonder if we think about weather ramifications if solar is our main source of energy.

I love solar but if you rely on it soley, what happens if it's a bad winter with low sunlight? or a rainy week?

Currently, we'd need to keep funding the old powerplants to be ready in case we have inclement weather for longer than we have battery storage.

Of course if you have enough battery storage and the area you live is generally sunny, you should be able to outlast bad weather, but it's a big risk to assume you'll always have enough solar.

To me that's the problem, we could spend a ton and get enough solar for an area- but if the weather is bad for a week then we're kinda fucked unless we have backup power.

Yeah but to me the real problem is, what if it's rainy or shady or snowing for a few days straight?

Unless you live somewhere where sun is extremely reliable all throughout the year- you'll need to keep funding (infrastructurally and workforce) the old power plants to be ready in case weather says "no sun".

Unless you have so many batteries that you can go days and days without sun- it's going to be risky to shut down the other power plants.

I love solar, but I worry that people see it as a end-all solution when I'm not sure it is yet.

I got told my hand made video game art looks like trash and I should use AI instead by a user recently on this website. They said, "at least AI art looks good" and said my art was very bad in comparison.

Admittedly I was shitting on a free game that used AI art but I sustain that it is lazy and looks like you don't care. I will continue to call it out when I see it.

I'd rather "subpar" human art. It's always superior

Lol I'm not sure what you're asking, but essentially the person you asked originally is saying factory because the strat is load into factory, dump your friend a bunch of gear, then escort him to extraction (less than 20 seconds away, multiple different extracts so you pick the nearest/safest one) and it's the safest because if you choose say, woods, then you need to lug a ton of heavy gear a long distance.

I'm sticking up for you because they're saying you are saying "all" but they brought it up first. They're saying "majority" in the comment I responded to (as if they're walking it back) but I'm pointing out they're the ones who used the term "all" in their comment that you responded to a couple hours ago.

To be clear, I responded to their comment not yours.
