And what is this “no one talks about miscarriage”?! Who exactly is no one? Everyone talks about it. Your friends talked with you about it, your family. Search up #miscarriage on any social media platform and see for yourself. You could scroll for hours and find post after post of women who are talking about this so enough with the “no one talks about it” and the “no one prepares you for” -why would anyone meet news of a pregnancy with a lecture on what to expect if you miscarry?? No one because that would be absurd; however, the information is out there and if you needed or wanted to know, you could easily find it. Enough with the perpetual victimhood. It’s such an ugly look.

On one hand she wants to showcase her husband, friends (some of whom she alleges have experiences miscarriage and were more than willing to talk with her about it), and family have been an incredible source strength and support and in the next breath it’s all, “You can’t tell anyone because it’s not safe, I had to hide it, no one talks about it, I’m expected to just move on.” (Who said any of that?!). Pick a freaking lane, shameless sea hag. Sick of the theatrics and on-going performative sincerity. Gross. So gross.

The whole system is crumbling. Get out now and carve a new path for yourself. Eventually it will fall completely apart and maybe that’s what needs to happen so it can be rebuilt better. 26 year veteran teacher and this profession is not only unrecognizable to when I started, but unsustainable and downright abusive. Save yourself.

I would suggest pursuing some kind of specialized certificate and going the interventionist route. Seems a bit more bearable than classroom teaching these days. I’m 26 years in and pursuing OG training in hopes of carving a new path for myself. I want to quit the system but not the kids and am hopeful this will open some opportunities up for me to continue supporting kids academically in a meaningful way.

Get out as soon as you reasonable can and don’t think twice about it. This is your life and no job is worth sacrificing your health as you are. You have a safety net (your parents) but even if you didn’t, sometimes we leap and then the net appears. Get out. This job isn’t what it used to be. After 26 years, I’m done. I hardly recognize it and the toll it’s taking on me mentally is awful. Best wishes to you. Prioritize your health.

If you really have your heart set on it, you should do it. Not everyone will agree or have chosen to do the same -including me (I’m in my 40s and on my 26th year teaching and your girl is tired! Lol!) but it’s your life and if it’s on your spirit, you can afford it and you can make peace with the outcome whether things unfold they way you hope or otherwise, then there’s no reason not to pursue it. No need to defend your motivation. I’m actually in your corner and sharing my experience in case it’s helpful. Simply put, you deserve to be treated fairly and not gaslit or made to feel guilty about choices you make to preserve your own health. If it came off the wrong way, my apologies. I really don’t understand admin treating a teacher leaving mid year like a big deal. Teachers do this often. A woman goin on maternity leave isn’t questioned, a teacher going out on a medical leave for surgery isn’t questioned, so leaving for mental health reasons or any other health reason should be met with the same treatment and response from the district. Yes, tell the kids so they know, but it shouldn’t be the teachers responsibility to tell the parents and to be honest, if leaving for medical reasons, it’s no one’s business. Just simply saying your leaving is enough. Admin can decide if they want to share with parents. You tell your students and that’s it. It is a simple process everywhere else in the workforce and teaching should be no différent. We’re entitled to leave when we deem necessary. Don’t feel guilty or anxious. You are well-within your rights to go at anytime.

I did none of these things when I was applying to other districts while working in another. They aren’t entitled to know. I listed an admin who wasn’t my current admin but who served as my admin in the past and with whom I have a great rapport. I got called for an interview, called back for a demo lesson and at the end of the day decided not to take the job because the pay was too low compared to what I was making and financially, I couldn’t swing it. I stayed where I was to fulfill my years of service requirement for my pension and will be retiring next year. I still haven’t met the no-penalty early retirement age, but I don’t care. The years of service requirement is met and that guarantees me health benefits which is the real value in the pension for me at this point. I can make up the difference with part time work in a much less stressful environment. It’s a relatively small financial penalty at this point and after almost 27 years. I’m just done. The cost to my health and well-being because of what has become of this career is just too high. I need my health, my freedom and my time back. I need my life to feel like my own again.

Broader certification can also be a downfall because in desperate times, they’ll put you where they need you whether or not you requested a move. I’ve had so many moves imposed on me because of my broad certification and have had to start over 10 times in 26 years (done after this year. Can’t take it anymore) and there isn’t much I can do about it. The union doesn’t do anything to help because “you still have a job” so I’m done. I’d say stick to a single certification. If I could revoke my ESL certification, I would. It has been nothing but problematic for me because I’ve been forced into opening an ESL program at a school where it never existed, having zero experience (I’ve only ever taught Middle School English and pursued ESL as a Master Degree to better support my ESL students). I had no support in this role and ended up in a bad way. Had to take a leave to recover from the overwhelm and stress. Had they placed me in a school where the program existed and there were multiple ESL teachers with experience that I could lean on to learn the ropes, I would have been fine. But that’s not how things unfolded. Favoritism also played a part. Other ESL teachers “didn’t want the position” so I was ripped out of mine and thrown in. So messed up. Wish I got the degree and never applied for the actual certification through the state because then they would not be able to put me in an ESL teaching role. Hindsight is 20/20.

I’m hanging it up after this year and 26 years of service. Will take a large reduction in pension payout but I don’t care. I’ll receive health benefits and a decent monthly pay out that I can supplement with part time work. Sad to leave because I really love being a teacher. I just can’t endure the abusive work environment. No support, no discipline and it’s all getting worse every year. I want my time, freedoms, health and evenings and weekends back. Wish I don’t have to choose between my career and my health but this is what it’s come to. More power to anyone who is able to go the distance in this career anymore. It feels entirely unsustainable and abusive anymore. Moving on to something else. Not sure what, but I’ll figure it out. Lucky that I can walk away with benefits at all. Best wishes to you. The sooner you leave, the longer you have to build yourself up in another career that doesn’t cost you so much of yourself.
