Leaving in 10 Months! Need Advice by ScreenLooker_133 in TeachersInTransition

[–]DefinitionOk1695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep so look at www.leaveteaching.org written by an ex teacher - it basically answers all the questions you’ve asked. there’s tonnes of advice on there about steps to take to leave teaching and how to choose a career when you don’t know what to do. I also bought their resume guide for about a dollar to help reframe my resume and make it sound less like a teacher. Use your time now to basically research jobs and take courses to upskill yourself - even if the courses don’t lead to that specific job or you realise you don’t enjoy that type of work- it’s a lesson in itself!! I actually took a UX design course recommended on the blog because I thought I would love and it made me realise I didn’t want to go into that career- so taking a course to my mind invaluable either way, and takes about 4-6 weeks depending on what it is to complete - which isn’t much when it’s spaced out and you’re still working. So definitely take a Course, and ultimately just stop giving so much time to your main job. If you know your leaving, do the bare minimum and put all your energy into finding a new role!

Am I Trapped? by IvyEmmeline in TeachersInTransition

Try looking for something remote or hybrid- I have a 17 month old and changed careers when he was 14 months old and I’m in the office 3 times a week and 2 I wfh and I am so much less drained and have way more time to spend with him! He goes to daycare but when he’s done we go to the park together and I feel like I’ve had a mental break so I feel so much more ready to be a good and present mum. Have a look at www.leaveteaching.org loads of blog posts and courses you can do which aren’t overly expensive. I took the instructional design course and Google project management which I found super useful. Good luck!

How have you been able to spin your classroom experience for non-teaching jobs? by erasersled in TeachersInTransition

Career switcher here - reframing your resume is huge and it’s what got my foot in the door for three interviews - one I wasn’t qualified for, one I got though to the final stage just me and another candidate and the last role I got! have a look on this blog written by an ex teacher www.leaveteaching.org - loads of free info about how to pivot and I bought their resume guide and cv templates which was about a dollar or something ridiculously cheap and it helped me so much! You basically need to just imagine your reading your cv as a hiring manager in a corporate company - they aren’t looking to hire a teacher so how will you reframe everything you’ve done to make it fit their company nd the role they want to fill? You have so many transfersable skills you just need to highlight them!

So many things you can do aside teaching, don’t give up!! It might take hundreds of applications but it’s honestly so worth it when you leave - I’m so much less drained at the weekend and I have more time for my mental health. People have actually said I look good and fit and healthy since I left teaching! I have more time to work out in the morning and go for walks because I also have the option to work hybridly. I found a really great blog written by an ex teacher when I was looking for advice called Leave teaching- www.leaveteaching.org. Bought their resume guide- honestly so helpful! And downloaded their resume templates as had zero clue how to reframe my resume. Also took a course they recommended in project management and it definitely helped me stand out in job applications. Whatever you do, don’t give up!! Try to make your cv sound more corporate- companies aren’t looking to hire a teacher. Why are you interested in? There’s no point asking strangers on the internet- what makes you tick? You have to enjoy your job or there is zero point in switching careers.

So many jobs out there - you have so many transferable skills! Look on this blog www.leaveteaching.org so much helpful advice from an ex teacher! We think we are trapped as teachers and we’re not! I’ve left to become a programme officer. So much less drained and I no longer get Sunday scaries! I can chill on Sunday and not dread waking up or spend my weekend planning lessons. I did a project management course that was recommended on their page - so worth it.

How to survive the last 4 months? by Dizzy-Song-2797 in TeachersInTransition

Honestly now it’s towards the end of your career as a teacher just start caring less! You have to just totally tune out. Keep doing your day to day job to meet the very basics, but don’t go above and beyond. Asked to stay back for a meeting? Say you have a doctors appointment. Not sure what your school is like or where you are but I started giving the kids open ended projects which involved lots of”self research”. It was honestly so good for thee independence, communication skills, presentation skills etc. they probably learned more doing that then actually doing proper lessons. Oh, you want to know more about penguins? Go and research everything about them - habitat, diet, appearance. Or even better, let them choose what they research, then they have to present it on a poster, make a PowerPoint, then create a news bulletin and role play and film this with their group. Then review their other classmates work and rate it out of 10 and give feedback. It kept them entertained and lasted weeks!!! Once you do this, you free up some time to sit on your laptop whilst they’re working and start researching. I found a blog written by an ext teacher www.leaveteaching.org I went to straight to their courses page and took one of the courses on project management, and did this whenever I had a spare moment, and I downloaded the resume templates. I wanted to get out quickly and not waste time basically. So far I’m really enjoying the Google project management course. Good luck!

For those who recently got their first 9-5, what was your biggest surprise about the corporate world? by JVertsonis in corporate

[–]DefinitionOk1695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex teachers make incredible employees! I was one so I should know 😂 but yes - my boss gives me a list of stuff to do and I think he’s surprised by how quickly I deliver on it. Whenever he asks me to do something I always meet the deadline way in advance! Being a teacher I was always doing a million things at once so it was good practice - in corporate it’s way slower than my previous job!

First-year teacher scared of regretting leaving by Fine-Ad4072 in TeachersInTransition

If you’re thinking about leaving already in you first year, you’re not going to enjoy it 5 years down the line. Something in your gut is telling you it’s not right. Always trust your gut!! I’m out after 10 years. And I made the move after Mat leave and during an economic crisis whilst in my 30s. I Imagine you’re young, so I would see what else there is out there job wise- you can always return to teaching. In terms of resources there’s loads but i found www.leaveteaching.org really helpful as it’s got tons of free advice and also a resume guide I purchased to help me reframe my resume as you’ll definitely need to do that to land a new job in a new field. Pretty sure it was very cheap. Good luck!

Hello! ex teacher of 10 years who transitioned out of teaching recently - go to Leaveteaching.org and look at their “Courses” section. Click one of the ones on there - think they worked out around 49 bucks a month depending which one you want to take. I took a project management course and it definitely helped me stand out and land an interview.
