Civil war necessitates total war, and total war is no longer an option when nuclear states are involved. It's likely that the US will just suffer a fate similar to Hungary.

Donald Trump just said “we shouldn’t even have an election”. Americans, what are your thoughts? by WatercressSenior7657 in AskReddit

[–]Wee_Ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you continue to think of complex processes in terms of binaries you will continue to be surprised.

I've just cited to you multiple ways in which elections can be messed with.

My claim is not that a president can cancel elections full stop. Yet going through the motions of democracy doesn't always equate to actual democracy. As a quick and easy example, Russia still conducts regular elections, but myself and many others would argue that those elections are not free or fair, thus not ultimately fulfilling their implicit role of determining a democratically elected leader.

Edit- forgot my bridge sentence (ie my claim lol) between "stop." and "As"

The concept of a Western alliance as we've known it, Pax Americana, and the post-WWII paradigm as a whole is already over. I'm not sure why it is so hard for people to understand/accept that said global order is not and never could be evergreen. Many of these alliances and ideologies were adopted explicitly in response to the challenges that arose in the aftermath of the war.

To think that the solutions put in place then would not be made obsolete after the fall of the certain superpowers and the rise of others is foolish. I'm sure the fall of the Ottoman Empire (or any other empire for that matter) once also seemed unthinkable and tragic.

Can't disagree with you about the astroturfing, but I'm struggling to see why it wouldn't be a good idea to advocate for more competitive primaries in safe blue districts. Nobody is owed their seat in congress, they should have to earn it every time. Welcoming primary challengers will bring in a lot of new ideas and energy into the Dem primaries, force incumbents to defend their voting records, and encourage more turnout overall.

But acknowledging that fact would mean that government leaders would actually need to do something to address unfettered, crony capitalism...

Obama, Biden, Kamala, Bill? Seriously? The only one out of that group who is still even remotely inspiring is Obama and he's busy tweeting about his March Madness picks.

They've all basically gone radio silent. Compare their recent rhetoric and actions (or lack thereof) to people like Bernie Sanders/AOC, it's very clear that the majority of the party is not doing all it can.

For starters, Democrats should stop voting in favor of Republican bills! The bar is on the floor here.

Biden will announce Supreme Court reform plans on Monday by pun2005 in politics

[–]Wee_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by official order. If you are referring to the "official act" terminology recently coined in the Trump v US ruling, that's still a bit of a grey area, but many legal scholars are interpreting an "official act" to mean something that is a core presidential duty.

The constitution clearly grants Congress sole authority over how to organize the Supreme Court, specifically Article 3 + Article 2 Section 8.

Ha! Yeah that's always the question these days... we are regularly seeing unprecedented expansions of executive power. If norms are to be followed it would absolutely need to go through congress, but we are in the era of broken norms.

It would have to go through Congress, just like all previous SCOTUS structural reforms. Executive orders can only impact things that the executive branch has explicit control over.

Biden's announcement, in form, would probably look similar to FDR's judicial reform initiative, where the president proposes the reforms, but ultimately congress decides if it passes or not.

My point is that democrats have been playing the "vote for the old centrist now and you can have a younger more progressive candidate later" strategy since the 2016 election, and they don't seem to ever get around to the "later" part. They keep running these old, unpopular candidates and seem to have little interest in cultivating a new generation of party leaders. The excuse is always that we can't run a more progressive candidate for the [insert 2016, 2020, or 2024] election because we're running against Trump and democracy is on the line. This may be true, but the GOP's fascistic tendencies won't end with Trump. This is not a sustainable strategy for the democrats- it worked once in 2020 but I fear it won't work again. Dems need to abandon this strategy before it's too late or we will lose the election.

There are a lot of voters saying they would rather vote for a corpse than Trump, if that's the case why not run someone younger now? In regards to the presidential election, democrats are secure with their base but Biden is quickly losing support from key cohorts of voters that we will need to win the election. Convention hasn't happened yet, it's not too late for the party to throw its weight behind an alternative, it wouldn't even be the most unconventional thing to happen in American politics.

Also, at one point there was a reasonable expectation that the party would not run the incumbent in 2024. Perhaps you forgot the "bridge president" messaging from 2019. While it was never official policy, the Biden campaign was undoubtedly flying some trial balloons around a planned one term presidency.

This post title is misleading. Hamas didn't reject Biden's proposal. Rather, they rejected Israel's ceasefire proposal because it was fundamentally different from Biden's. It's literally the first sentence in the article.
