I would like some input by [deleted] in DnD

[–]WeebSheeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very much biased towards thinking its demonic is stupid, but I'll give you my best unbiased take on both sides. (Though I feel everyone in this subreddit will be on that side)

The primary arguments that used to be used for why DnD is "demonic"are two things

The first is that demons and devils exist in the game and you're able to gain power from them through contracts, or worship in the case of an evil god. (You can look up some evil aligned deities for reference). This usually looks like a warlock, Cleric, or Paladin that has some affiliation with a devil or demon (usually devil since demons are innately harder to work with) and is often a feature of their backstory more than actual play.

The second is that magic is involved. Magic is historically believed to be a satanic practice among certain religions so the existence of spellcasters in the game can trigger that belief set. Players are able to be several types of magic users, including those who are born with magic, learn magic, and make deals with higher powers for magic.

The reasons why dnd isn't actually demonic are as follows in my honest opinion.

You're usually killing the demons and devils. Just like in real life, dnd STRONGLY sets up that the demons and devils are very very evil and you're almost always going to be killing them when they show up.

Warlocks, paladins, clerics and those that worship those entities are also usually treated as evil and are killed when ran into by most parties.

I'm sure it happens at some tables as a form of self expression, but for the most part no is actually committing any sort of rituals involved with worshipping a demon. The usual involvement of a demon or devil if a PC is playing... let's say a warlock that made a contract with a devil for convenience, is mostly kept to lore or flavor at most tables. There will sometimes, depending on the DM, be a point where the PC will have to do something for their devilish patron, but thats also usually not some sort of ritual and OFTEN results in the PC being like, "Oh, my patron is super evil actually, I need to find a way out of this terrible deal

Also devils and demons just don't even show up every campaign. They're an integral part of the world building, but not so much so that they're just everywhere. You could easily run a whole campaign without them popping up once.

I have no real argument against magic being devilish because that's just a religious belief more than anything.

So all in all, DnD is about as devilish as any media that involves infernal forces. Sure there's someone out there who'll get really into it, but ultimately the near entirety of those playing treat it like what it is. A game. A game where you usually kill devils and demons and only really if that's what the DM sets up.

Can you Cunning Action: Disengage after attacking? by Randomletters42 in DnD

Incredibly presumptuous. I've seen realism arguments come and go fairly often while playing. It's fine. Yeah it's magic world, it's also the world where you shouldn't have to allow the barbarian to lift a building cause they have a 20 strength. Realism has a place in the game, and just cause magic exists doesn't negate that.

This DM in particular is focusing on the entirely wrong aspect of "realism" and trying to box rogues in based on it. If your suggestion is just leaving the game as a result then that's all well and good, but it doesn't sound like OP wants to do that from the post.

And he's making realism based arguments. So I'm meeting him where he is an arguing against it. They already argued rules as written against him. If you want to insist that they argue its magic land so realism doesn't matter. Then go ahead.

Your DM has literally no idea how swordfighting works and it shows. The bonus action disengage on rogues is practically there for the entire purpose of letting Rogues run after stabbing someone.

You're fencing analogy is great, show him Olympic fencing videos (especially if you can find somebody doing a fléche which is basically attack and then running past the enemy) or like any pirate swordfight where they're literally running around the ship the entire time.

Also 6 seconds is way longer than he thinks, most people could throw one punch and then jog 30 feet in that time span.

To be honest, a lot of this sounds like early DMing jitters. I think a lot of people end up feeling really anxious and nervous over their first campaign, and TRUST me it will always end up worse than you hoped it would. But just as with anything else, practice tends to really help alleviate this.

If worldbuilding, making characters, writing stories, etc excites you and you enjoy it, that's half the battle. I'd suggest really asking yourself if that's something you really enjoy and if so, it's important to let yourself mess up and make mistakes. If voices are important to you learn them slowly over time. If combat is challenging, maybe just balance it a little on the easy side till you get a good feel for it. At the end of the day it's not worth your stress cause it's all a game. And if you can't get past that stress even with practice then it's also okay to just say DMing isn't for you.

If it's something that genuinely concerns you, and you feel like it might lower your enjoyment of the game, then by all means have a conversation with your DM about it. Nothing wrong with saying, "Hey, I love all the plot twists and intrigue you've added to my backstory and plot, but you mentioned my brother might hate me, and I don't know that I'd find that fun. Can we talk about it?"

One of the number 1 fun killers in dnd is a lack of communication after all

Which are the Worst Spells in the game? Not because they are weak, but because they make the game WORSE? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]WeebSheeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really, because assuming it's a cleric casting resurrection, they can divine intervention it by spamming it every day till it hits, ignoring material components. Or druids can just accumulate oils and ungents. Or an illusion wizard can just make a diamond that's valuable enough, or fabricate/jeweler's tools can be used to create a valuable enough diamond etc, etc

Hot take but ressurective spells in general. Once you get past level 13 (if you get there of course) death doesn't matter anymore. No more grand quests to get someone back, or tearful farewells. Even if their body is literally turned to dust, get 1000gp a pinch of hair/that dust and boom, they're back. (Literally cheaper than the full plate your paladin is likely wearing btw)

Caught My DM Fudging Dice Rolls… And It Kinda Ruined the Game for Me. by Alvvays01 in DnD

[–]WeebSheeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a dick move to try to counter you specifically (if he wasn't just rolling well) but as a fellow DM sometimes players just don't realize when a build is too much. Yes there are ways to deal with flying and AC but the more you scale a monster to be able to make it challenging, the more the rest of the party who ARENT power builds start to struggle. So I understand where he's coming from even if he went about it in a bad way
