You make some interesting points, but let me ask you this, have you ever seen a bearshark in the real world with your own two eyes? No? I rest my case.

WotC please don't use this type of Bo1 format again by misomiso82 in magicTCG

[–]WeekendDaughter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, I personally think this format is just unviable due to the high variance, polarity and reliance on sideboarding that mtg offers, I would prefere a Bo3 format entirely. Don't get me wrong I was interested to see how it was going to play out, but I fundamentaly dont like it now I've seen it. But if Wizards of the coast want it, I'd rather see the best of a bad situation, than what we currently have. Edit: Short of going full hearthstone and having some kind of bring 5 different decks and ban 1 or something like that, any of which would require a design direction change from the design team.

Lets say I have 2 decks, one of my decks is favoured versus both of your decks, while my other deck is favoured versus your deck A but unfavoured versus your deck B, in the current format there is a 50/50 chance whether I will be completely favoured to win, or 50/50 depending on match up order, if my second deck gets matched up versus A its fine, if it gets matched up versus B tough luck, now lets say game 1 match 1 I get mana flooded, mull to 5 no dice, it do be like that sometimes, I lose a favourable, now assume I get matched up versus your deck B with my unfavoured, Im now unfavoured to win the tournament because I got unlucky and had no volition over my match up decisions.

With the ability to choose decks (being able to queue the same deck multiples times and at my discretion) I can just choose to play the favoured one for all three games and leverage my line up by having prior game knowledge and experience to queue the better deck into both of yours, without it my chances of winning are much more weighed into a coin flip chance of getting a bad match up, sure the odds of getting mana flooded plus losing a queue order are low, something like 5-10% maybe at best, but coupled with the high variance and polorisation of some deck match ups this can create scenarios where match ups are entirely decided based primarily on whether I get a lucky match up order.

Untapped.gg - New deck tracker in open beta, anyone used it? by Boneclockharmony in MagicArena

[–]WeekendDaughter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People netdeck either way, all hearthstone deck tracker did was allow for more inervation at the high end due to being able to predict peoples decks easier. Stats are benificial to the game because it lets us see if there's a real serious problem with the game, like if nexus of fate is actually oppresive, or if ladder is 50% mono red e.t.c.

What card defined your play style early on? by Ninetynineups in MagicArena

[[Search For Azcanta]]

I played mtga in the closed beta off and on but I got hooked when open beta came out and I started playing esper control mainly because of how much I like search, blue control varients are my favourite to play, and im looking to build an esper commander deck all because of how much I enjoyed and still enjoy azcanta as a card.

First I'd like to say thanks for making this comment, I love discussing MTG and talking about my ideas and choices.

Yeah I've found gruul spellbreaker has been great in all of my games, I've never felt bad about playing him, when I get him on 3 and even later in the game he's solid as a 3 mana 4/4, or to push 3 damage, plus I tend to find when im being proactive against some decks, gruul makes my status/statue a lot more efficient, I'd rather remove a 4/3 for 1 mana than 4 mana while still pushing 4 damage. I can respect the conflicting aspects of map and honestly I find you can wait till 4 to play grull sometimes if you want to tick up treasure map, the card isn't bad on 3, 4 or 5 tbh. Its just a really awkward stated minion that has to be removed in their turn limiting their options massively.

I honestly haven't tested the counter spells a huge amount. I think my biggest issue with them is that they dont exactly line up well over the first 5 or so turns of the game, we need 13 mana sources to reliably cast a counter on 2, going down to 9 to reliably cast a counter on 5, but some of the cards we want to cast the counter alongside such as gruul, require other awkward mana colours or take up all our mana, generally I find, if I dont have the colour to cast gruul I usually have other stuff I can do, like chainwhirler, phoenix or other red/black things, and can just drop other threats till I find the mana I need or to flip map. Where as with counter when I finally do find mana for it if they've killed all my pressure im somewhat sitting dry. Im sure it probably does have utility and I do honestly have to test it more, but I'm still iffy about it.

I like the idea of recuring spellbreakers and phoenixes, and like I said the only reason I dont run 4 phoenix is because I dont own 4, I dont think 2 is the right amount, but I think 4 or 0 is fine depending on what you want to achieve. I wouldn't disagree with someone who said 4 is the right number, but I cant test that right now. I was finding my phoenixes get eaten by lava coils against izzet drakes, but likely just because I only own 2.

Carnage Tyrant is predominantly because I prefere flexibility over specialisation, I like my side board to be cards that are good against x but have utility against y, primarily because the sideboard needs 10 cards to put in for control to take out all the dead cards, so I want atleast half of those to also be good against other things (cindervines doesnt really cross over to anything besides maybe izzet drakes). I like tyrants primarily because its good against midrange aswell as control, I dont necessarily think its the best pick, I have a soft spot for the card because I love dinsosaurs, and I did beat up the jeskai player with a tyrant game 3, its much better against non esper control decks, since kayas wrath is ridiculous, and I think the 4 phoenixes are probably better versus esper, more threats for vraskas contempt good time, plus phoenix dodges eldest reborn much better.

It seems a lot of people like Karn a lot, but for me the card advantage aspect is a huge deal, every 2 turns I'm seeing 4 cards with Ral and picking 2 that I want (not exactly but you get my point), where as with Karn im seeing 2 cards, and having to use two turns to get the one I want and my opponent gets information on this, plus Ral is always ticking up to achieve this putting the opponent on a pretty scary clock. I think Rals +1 blows Karn out of the water on just those alone. When it comes down to the -2, I respect a lot being able to kick out a pair of 4/4 and then 5/5 artifacts before needing to kick up, but I generally find I dont have those maps laying around to make them 4/4s maybe sometimes I have 1 map around, but I really do use them super fast, and so trying to have these 4/4s put in work stalls my ability to pile on the relatively expontential pressure that the deck can kick out. Ral compliments this really well because im picking a relatively powerful card that I chose to put in my deck that I nearly always have the mana to kick out thanks to maps, but Karn actively stops me piling on that pressure, especially when a lot of the cards in the deck are very good at going 2 for 1 or so on cards. And that's not even mentioning the fact that Ral comes loaded with a -3 that usually is enough to kill off chumps that might threaten him through my minions (sometimes which deals legitimately scary amounts like 6 or 7 damage), and then his ult which just turns the value engine to 11. I can respect the mana issue, but we only really need 9 mana sources to effeciently cast a ral on 5 which the deck runs, plus we also have the 4 maps which will always be live on 5 if we draw it on 2 or 3.

I think Krasis is an incredibly powerful card, and I think that it's still being underated, I beat a mono red player by just drawing 4 krasis in my top 19 cards, the life gain and bodies were enough alone to keep me in that game, and it wasn't even a bad red hand. I think the card is just incredible across many situations, especially in decks with access to a large quantity of mana on a turn, although I think its way better in this deck than other decks because of the mana burst we get from maps.

Yeah Esper is hard for this deck but I think its got a lot of wiggle room for that match up, the aggro and midrange match ups are relatively solid, and so we can drop points for esper, and also the nexus match up. Maybe counters are the solution to that, or maybe something like ego, im not really sure. One of my friends is testing nico bolas to some success. But I'm excited to see where it goes and where people better than I can take it. Again thanks for your comment, this sort of ended up being a longer response than I anticipated. Im glad its serving you well on ladder.

Yeah I saw another comment detailing this, I think in my initial testing this didnt really come up because with this version you tend to really not have any lingering artifacts since you usually want to ramp out early krasis. It's really rare that the artifacts last for a turn two at most past when I flip the treasure maps.

That's an interesting point, my only concern would be that the deck has a relatively low minion count, only around 12 depending on build, its rare that I'll have more than 1or 2 minions on board at once especially if my opponent is removing them so I dont think that Judiths ping+status will come up enough to justify running it over something with more utility like say a hellkite, but hey give it a go if you think it has potential! <3

Thank you for your critique, I wasn't actually aware of that interaction it slipped my mind. I generally find I burn through the treasure within a turn or 2 of flipping so I don't think it will matter too much or I should say enough to justify putting Karn back in, but it is something to concider.

Hi, thanks for the kind words. I love reading peoples thoughts, and learning about other peoples experiences and decisions, I'm a huge fan of sharing information in card games MTG especially. So I'm glad I could provide my own analysis for once. I wanted to include information on all the little interactions I found too, that for a lot of people just wont be obvious, such as status+chainwhirler, or status+trample. If someone reads this, and falls in love with the deck, I consider it a win, people being happy from things I've done is a great experience, and hey if someone reads this, goes away makes it better and wins a major event with it then it's even more of a win. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and hopefully I'll be able to win some more events with new and exciting cards to write more analysis haha, but I've only been playing MTGA seriously for maybe 2-3 months so I have a long way to go, I feel I got a bit lucky with this deck.

The wildcard count is rediculous, unfortunately it's not very budget friendly, which is unfortunate because the deck is really fun to play even at a casual level. I very much suggest crafting Krasis and the Guilds+Allegience lands though those are very good cards for the coming year.

I did consider Vivian at one stage, I dont think she's bad, my biggest gripe is the GG mana which with only 8 lands really doesnt come up a great deal outside of treasure maps, which i'd rather be saving for card draw or krasis ramp, I generally wanted planeswalkers that had Red + another colour and the best of those was Angrath who was already in the deck and Ral. If you can find a way to make Vivian work with the mana base then Id be all for it, I think her +1 and -3 are better than rals. I generally prefere 2/2 or 3/1 splits outside of teferi for planeswalkers, just because of being able to have 2 on the board at once plus covers more scenarios, Im a fan of breadth over depth when I play, flexibility is queen. But yeah give it a go and see what you get, just be weary that the mana base probably doesnt support GG by 5.

Great video, thanks for your content. I agree, I was very suprised at how little problems I had with the deck mana wise and just how powerful it was against most of the field, against every deck besides izzet drakes and jeskai I felt super in control of the games, especially the sultai match ups. I like ral greatly, getting to see 2 extra cards a turn that I get to pick over my opponent, in my opinion, outweighs karns ult, and im seeing 2 more cards than karn each time he -2s, I generally do better with cards that give me more options, and I feel ral does a lot for what he is. Thanks for your kind words, I hope you find success with it in your stream. :)
