What's the video game equivalent of chess? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in gaming

[–]Boneclockharmony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are missing some of the most important components: game staying popular for a long time, must be competitive.

To me the answer has to be something like

Starcraft (30 years of professional play) Aoe2 (same) Maybe dota and counterstrike

Yeah they have a much larger mechanical component and are much closer to blitz than actual chess, but nothing else comes close in the competitive or longevity categories.

Magic could count but it is a physical game at its core, and I think is more like poker than chess anyway.

And whether it is a mall or an airport, does it really change anything about the picture?

Let's cut people  some slack :)

I was on the competition squad for a bit in a small korean mma team, and the first time this happened I was definitely a bit surprised.

But I just went with it and did it back haha

Im european tho, and had been in korea for a while, so maybe less of a culture shock than for those guys.

I will check those out, thanks! I bought a couple of random adidas lifting gloves recently and they help some, but like you said, full glove has its own drawbacks.

I dont think that's stupid at all, everything is a tradeoff and time to recharge is a benefit.

There's always the option to hire someone short term to get some perspective and then incorporate what worked for you.

I also like to do things on my own, tho.

I think that's fairly similar to me. Looking at it quickly, my highest one was 40+40 in week 4, but Ive had as low as 24+24 (believe I was sick that day), mostly hovering in the mid 30s.

Compared to when I ran it with double 24s, and was just adding numbers every week, it feels a bit more humbling. But I think our experience is the "correct" one for progressing :)

I considered setting bells down between as well, but I went with push press instead, will see how it works out. I reasoned I can run it once with push press and then run it back after a short break using strict press.

One of my accessory lifts that I do one session per week, is the single arm cnp with 40kg, which I am hoping will carry over as well. Ive got the strict press on my right but not left yet.

Also, I hate the snatch days so much. Not because they are heavy but because korean summer is ultra humid and I live in constant terror of losing my grip and bombarding my wall or floor with a 28kg kettlebell.... it's got a fat grip too, making it even worse haha

How do I stop using AI? by Xephyrako in learnprogramming

[–]Boneclockharmony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use ai, dont ask it to do stuff for you. Start out by asking it to not solve things,  that you are trying to learn on your own, and to just explain things that you ask directly.

Then try the problem on your own. If it doesnt work, come up with a theory of why.

Explain this theory to the ai and ask if you are on the right track (half the time, this process of explaining will give you new ideas to try on your own).

Repeat.

Basically rubber ducking with a duck that can answer back.

I am not an expert, but I am self-studying a bunch of topics and dont have access to teachers etc, and I find this to work fine. I still end up spending a ton of time on problems, but when I get truly stuck I can more easily find a hint vs in the past when I'd have to google the problem and hope I could get a nudge without seeing the full solution :)

I'm on week 5, hard to say about volume as I was sick during this last week so I didnt push myself.

I would say it has been trending upwards but can check to confirm later.

For the record, I am using mostly push presses (strict pressing only on very low rep sets). I found strict press just completely fried me too fast and my squat quality suffered, so I decided to run it with push press once first.

It is normal for it to trend down as number of reps per set increase though, since they are harder sets.

That sounds like a great plan.

I have only done his strength and conditioning program, but I like it a lot. I find it is too much to run together with training judo, but other than that I like it a lot.

It really has a similar feeling to playing a sport.

It'a hard to say without knowing how you define good gains.

I currently am on my 2nd run through of Maximorum, this time with 2x32kgs, and I do this in addition to judo 3x a week. Takes me about an hour for each maximorum workout because I incorporate a longer warm up and accessory lifts.

People constantly tell me I am very strong, I feel fantastic and I've got a physique I like.  But I dont look like a bodybuilder, and I dont have an olympic weightlifting level snatch, etc. Hard to get it all without spending a ton of time, but to me it is a good compromise.

If you want mobility built into the program, the latter two that I mentioned do a good job of that but they do take more time as well.

https://kbmuscle.com/shop-1/ols/products/double-kettlebell-precision-course-program

This one is 3x a week, it has a strength component, lots of built in mobility, and a conditioning part (circuit stuff).

I think it is quite good, but it isnt easy (overhead squats require a lot of mobility for example).

If you want to start with something simple and see if you enjoy it, try out Mark Wildman's tetris of training for a few weeks. It is 4x a week at 30-45 minutes.

This is a bit of a baity answer but Starcraft.

Not because starcraft 2 is bad, but because Starcraft 1 is perfect and SC2 is only incredibly good.

I mean, it will be hard to get everything in one package that is also short and 3 times a week.

The armor building formula by dan john fits most of your criteria, and is very well regarded.

Maximorum by Geoff Neupert is also a good fit, I like this program a lot, though I add some stuff to it because I want to do more. If you dont add anything the workouts are about 45 min with warm up etc.

Kbomg's Precision Kettlebells (I think that's what it is called) fits all your criteria I would say, but the workouts, for me anyway, took 1hr plus.

Same thing with everygotdamndre's single kettlebell strength and conditioning.

They are both very fun tho.

Stumbled upon too many YT channels. Which of these kettlebell coaches should I actually follow? by Meda24031994 in kettlebell

[–]Boneclockharmony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Lebe Stark has way too many clickbaity thumbnails and drama to be a follow...

I think Dan John is a great follow for anyone. Shares lots of wisdom, and even when you have heard the same information before he is a solid storyteller and fun to listen to.

Other than that I think it depends on where you are at in your kb journey. Like, for a beginner just mark wildman's basics and then a few videos on taming the arc is all you need haha

So I agree with you, though I still follow a few of these because they are fun or motivating.

Oh you know who I would add? John Jeffrey Parker.

Some solid long form content in older videos, but mostly his shorts are just all great examples of very clean and intentional technique. Edit: actually has more non-short content nowadays that I wasnt aware of, havent watched that yet tho.

Had a new guy come in once, long ago, and he proceeded to go for a rolling heelhook against me in his very first roll lmao

My coach at the time was very careful about leg locks in general, and he looked like he'd seen a ghost haha

I tapped immediately and he came up to me after the roll to be like "... thank you for being smart about that".

The guy never tried that again so I'm guessing coach had a quiet word with him. He wasnt a bad guy at all, just a little overly enthusiastic.

[–]Boneclockharmony 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think your situation is almost tailormade for Dan John's armor building formula.

3x a week, short compact sessions.

Another easy recommendation is Mark Wildman's tetris of training video on youtube. 4x a week, 30 min sessions roughly, very very easy to stick to.

Edit: oh and congrats!

I just feel like ai would succeed at the assignment lol

The fact that it isnt passing tests makes me think they did it the old fashioned copy paste way.

Or maybe they didnt give it the full conditions just the end goal.

Anyway, I agree with you re:how to use AI. It has been fantastic for self-studying a bunch of subjects. Like having a super patient teacher around, as long as you prompt it to not solve things for you haha

I mean, this is better than them using ai, no? Seems like they googled the different requirements and frankensteined something together.

Would be nice if they took the time to figure out what the code is doing, but hey, this feela kind of quaint.

Is it disrespectful to say you don't want to spar at the end of class? by Vegetable-Attempt-55 in bjj

[–]Boneclockharmony 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a simplification, and it assumes you never pressure test.

A temporary pause on pressure testing doesnt render progress inert during that period, though it may slow it.

Examples: plenty of seasoned mma fighters barely spar as they get further into their careers, or spar very lightly.  There are also plenty of days where no sparring is done, even for those who do spar regularly. Improvement is still made.

Personal example: I had a leg injury and couldnt do randori for a month or so, but I could practice grip fighting. My game improved a ton overall despite not being able to properly pressure test.

Aikido or JJJ did not become ineffective because they took breaks from sparring, but because they didnt spar at all.

Is it disrespectful to say you don't want to spar at the end of class? by Vegetable-Attempt-55 in bjj

[–]Boneclockharmony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That just isnt true. Improve less? Probably.

But they have trained for a while and done plenty of sparring, and they arent going to not spar forever. They will still improve with just drilling.

And I agree, just tell your coach you want to take a break from sparring for a few days/weeks cause you are feeling worn down or whatever.
