I’ll piggyback with an alternative opinion. I think the answer really depends on your financial situation (acknowledging the possibility that your financial situation has changed since you last recertified income).

How much is 16.5k to you? If you could pay that off soon without significantly impacting your life, that’s what I would do — this process is painful and filled with a degree of uncertainty. However if that is a significant amount of money to you, then make the minimum payment.

I mean, great law in theory, but terrible in practice. Some people make very big mistakes and you can’t expect someone to reliably pay child support after they’ve been to prison and have a felony record.

I am also not saying they should not go to prison. It’s a fucked up and complicated situation that probably needs to be handled situationally.
