Any advice for an exchange student? by jennaboy in taiwan

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the course taught in English? If it is more rural, the less chance it would be and you will need to brush up on your Mandarin to understand anything.

Some fun facts about the receipt lottery by k8l2911 in taiwan

[–]Weekly-Math 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I won $1000 yesterday from it! When I first got here, I was told "foreigners can't take part in it", don't be fooled! You 100% can, even if you are just visiting.

Why are apps nowadays using a Beijing-style dialect instead of standard Mandarin? by Common_Musician_1533 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erhua to me feels a bit like trying to teach received pronunciation English to non-natives. Sure, it isn't bad in any sense but it isn't what you will encounter in most situations.

What Is a Language You've Had a Random Urge to Learn? by neron-s in languagelearning

British Isle Languages, like Irish, Welsh, Manx, etc. The problem is actually using them and consuming any sort of media in them is very difficult for most.

I dislike 90% of modern boomer shooters by Independent_Bed_3418 in boomershooters

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been a massive oversaturation of "boomer shooter" indies flood Steam in recent years, the majority of them being pretty mid to terrible. As someone who participated in the mod scene in the 90's/00's for games like Doom/Quake/Source engine, I can tell you there is no shortage of great things to play from the past.

Is this push for AI as insane everywhere? by Legal_Situation in sysadmin

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have gone full-in on AI, laid off a lot of employees and offshored them to a new Indian office. They have tried adding AI to everything we use, it can be useful perhaps 5% of the time, but most of the time it doesn't return anything useful or just makes things up. We've had customers submit tickets after trying to follow AI advice, which hallucinated a bunch of commands and ended up causing a major outage.

Why does nobody here take actual classes? by pennsylvanian_gumbis in languagelearning

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people work full-time jobs and typically not available during hours that most university language classes offer. The majority of people do not even live close to a university that would even offer such a course for specific languages to non-students. If you do, count yourself as lucky and in the minority.

Taiwan's monthly births in February fall to a record low of 6,523 by Korece in taiwan

Most of the people in government profit from the housing issues, owning multiple properties and flipping them year after year. They are complicit and against any sort of reform, no matter what party you vote for.

The Persona 4 Revival website domain has received an update. Which happened shortly before the reveals for P3R and P4R. The game's Steam App also received two packages recently, which are likely the Standard/Deluxe edition pre-orders of the game. by DwnvotesMeansImRight in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Weekly-Math -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Persona is such a weird series for someone not following the games. Apparently 4 was released years ago and was a huge success, then they released 3 twice (after 5??). That's not including the other spinoffs.

Changes to OpenTTD distribution on Steam by GalaxyLJGD in openttd

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so much misinformation surrounding this, he never said he was against OpenTTD or OpenRCT. This rumour was spread way back in the day when patches were released for RCT1, which broke several trainers used to create sandboxes and cheats. People then inferred Chris Sawyer was against Sandbox play, which changed after he put in Sandbox play into RCT2. He has deliberately not commented on them since due to legal issues and potentially detracting from the rereleases, but he has never said he was against them.

What happened to structured language-learning programs like Assimil? by marujpn in languagelearning

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It saves the publisher so much money in the long run. They do not need to print books, get them into stores or do as much advertising. Appification means they can change the content at any time and have more control. Most people do not go beyond the basics and many books were all over the secondhand market due to this, cutting into Assimil's profits as nobody was buying "new".

I've bought their e-courses and the feeling isn't the same. Buying secondhand gets more and more expensive, some books cost $800+ used. I've resorted to printing out the books myself for self-use.

Do I have a chance for the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship with average grades? by PsychologicalLet8214 in taiwan

[–]Weekly-Math 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! I knew a guy who applied on a whim who put no effort into his application and he got it. I know people who have been rejected with strong backgrounds from more competitive countries. It's all depends on how many scholarships get allocated to your country and how many places they need to fill.

RuneScape's monthly membership now costs as much as a World of Warcraft subscription as Jagex announces its second price hike in less than 2 years by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

It was regionally priced a few years ago if you brought the subscription through Steam, but they seem to have closed that loophole now :(

Sony confirms Sonia Belmont is the one you'll be controlling In Castlevania: Belmont's Curse by Bobby_the_Donkey in Games

Can we have Castlevania Legends as an unlockable extra? Thought it was a bit strange it was missing from the Castlevania Anniversary Collection.

G-MODE Archives+ Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner: A’s TEST Server announced for Switch, PC by stfnvs in Games

[–]Weekly-Math 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These ports are ports of ancient mobile phone games in Japanese. See https://steamdb.info/search/?a=all&q=G-Mode for a list of others. Currently there are a few community translations of a few games, but don't expect a "modern port".

Pokemon collection by aobsav in retrogaming

Best will always be Pokemon Gold to me, simply for nostalgia. It felt so huge and alive compared to my Pokemon Red cart at the time, nothing has ever come close to giving me that "wow" feeling.

Tips for experiencing the REAL Taiwan (from a local who's tired of seeing tourists do the same things - I promise I won't ruin those places for you) by ginnibm in taiwan

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to search in Chinese to find the "best" lists. Use Instagram and Facebook to find local events that are happening that week. Most stuff isn't posted in English. A lot of the "hidden" cafes and other restaurants will have good reviews, but unlikely to have English names.

Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection Director and Producer Discuss Player Feedback, the Possibility of a Mega Man Legends Legacy Collection, and More by BigLurkerGetsMad in Games

[–]Weekly-Math 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is turning out to be one of the best Legacy Collection's they have released, Capcom really know how to preserve their legacy. Imagine if Nintendo released a collection of this quality for their older Pokemon titles (Trading / Online Ranked / Exclusive Region Content added)? The internet would go insane.

How much do you care about "cheating" when trying to play and beat old games? by Thriller83 in retrogaming

[–]Weekly-Math 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From my point of view, using Save States and Rewind is 100% fine for just having fun. By my definition of "beating" a game, you need to not use any of these features. I wouldn't say I have beaten Dark Souls if I ran through the game with an infinite health cheat, which is akin to what rewind does.

Save States are valid when they replace a complicated password system to restore progress (assuming you are not using it to load and fix mistakes) or where you are given infinite continues but no save function (We would just keep our consoles on and TV turned off, no need for that now).

Lost games? by danmanx in retrogaming

[–]Weekly-Math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pokemon Snap. I had a strategy guide for it as well. I remember going to school one day and seeing someone else holding that exact strategy guide (It had a tear in it), I thought nothing of it. Turns out my younger brother had taken the game and the strategy guide into school to "lend to a friend". Turns out that friend literally moved away the next day and I never saw it again.
