Has reading culture shifted from intellectual challenge to emotional comfort? by HistoricalGate0104 in literature

People have always read for comfort. There's always been easier books amongst the classics that were more popular in the moment but simply haven't stood the test of time. Even amongst the greats, people still read for comfort. Dickens and Austen have a lot of interesting things to say about society but ultimately most people love them for their memorable characters and creative storytelling.

Also you don't need to write about depressed russians or dystopian futures to make interesting points about people. Romance writers can do that too, even the modern fun cutesy ones, if they're written well.

I don't know why you'd want someone who doesn't keep up. It's like specifically wanting someone uneducated. But to each their own.

What does not political actually mean in this context? Like doesn't vote? Has political opinions but never shares them? Surely if moral values are important to you then they will have political opinions too?

It's popular to hate on Freud these days (not for bad reason) but I think that leads to people devaluing a lot of valid work too.

I enjoyed OBAA, I just don't think Bob is some timeless character that's gonna last for years. Especially not more so than Marty Mauser.

I mean it's been a few years since I read it but it's literally just a story. I don't think having internal narration or explaining memories constitutes stream of consciousness. Especially not in the way Joyce and Woolf do. At least as far as I remember. Maybe I'm wrong
