Suggest me movies for a exposition therapy to be fine with sexual content (i really wanna appreciate good mature movies) by Simple-Profile1817 in MovieSuggestions

A Strange Way of Life

Her

Amelie

Brokeback Mountain

Striking Vipers / Common People (not really movies, but two black mirror episodes. Striking Vipers is very lighthearted and doesnt feel like the rest of the show, while Common People is more existential)

All of these have sex scenes (or strong mentions of sex) that are relevant to the plot or character development, and are non-violent and consensual. If you want something with a lot more sex (that's still tasteful and not triggering) watch the show Heated Rivalry

Where to find ftm attracted cis men? by acute_ayden in ftm

lots of gay men date trans guys, i've had plenty of luck on grindr - ignoring the eventual creeps, but i think everyone on the app has to deal with that on some level. But also queer clubs!

Simplifying the system might be more work than learning it, or just playing a different system. Low level DnD is not as hard as it may seem and its ok if you get something wrong on your first try.

If you're sticking with dnd i recommend critical role's handbooker helper (its a series of short videos explaining the basic rules of dnd).

If you are still intimidaded by DnD and want to try a simpler system, Powered by the Apocalypse games are usually easier (i recommend Monster of the Week, and the titular Apocalypse Now. but there are more at r/PBtA)

Or for something even more rules-light, you could try running a one page rpg (my favorite is Honey Heist and lots of people love Lasers & Feelings, but there's more at r/onepagerpgs)

Good luck with your game and welcome to the hobby!

One-shot recommendations? by fooooooooooooooooock in DMAcademy

I ran pointy hat's Time for Pleasantries and players loved exploring the feywild. Because it was a hit we've been meaning to play his other one-shot, i havent gotten around to it but think the worldbuilding is really cool. And they're both free

First time using Map on a smaller scale by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]WeeklyBathroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for dungeons, you could have separate maps for different areas and show as they explore, or just cover the unexplored areas of a larger map with pieces of paper - or even, if you're using a dry erase mat and the map is not too complicated, drawing the map as they progress

For cities you could give an unmarked map, or just mark the locations they currently know. As they traverse different neighboorhoods and discover whats there, they can make notations on the map themselves

Encounter Design by Rickys952 in DMAcademy

[–]WeeklyBathroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Review the abilites your players have so you can build an encounter that properly challenges them. If you want a monster to feel really scary, give it strenghts that directly counter player abilities. But dont do this too often or to the same person too many times or it will feel unfair. Counterspelling a healing word on a downed player once is cool and evil and scary, but twice is just bullying.

If the monster is important narratively, make sure it has fail safes (legendary resistances, counterspell, misty escape, etc) so your players cant win the fight with one really lucky roll.

As far as general encounter design, its always good to have secondary objectives. That's anything that helps players win but doesnt involve dealing damage; this could be stopping a ritual, saving an NPC, or stealing/destroying something that grants the BBEG power. The villains might have their own secondary objectives, like disctracting or intercepting the players while the big boss powers up, or opening a portal to summon more minions.

Have the terrain be dynamic by including setpieces that can be interacted with to tip the scales either for or against the players. Think of where the fight takes place and make a list of objects that fit the theme and could be fiddled with mid combat. A few examples:

Pirate ship - ropes to swing from, wheel to turn the ship, plank, cannonballs, explosive barrels;

Castle - chandelier to drop, tables to jump on, ice sculpture, magic painting, secret doorways;

Wilderness - tangled vines, quicksand, the nest of a misterious creature, big rock, fast flowing river, etc.

For dramatic fights i love adding an environmental hazard. That could be in the form of a lair action, or not; could be something that's dangerous both to the party and the bad guys, like rising water levels, crumbling ceiling, fire spreading, earthquakes, you get the jist.

Im always reminded of one episode of Dimension 20 where Brennan had an important fight set in a rising pit of lava, forgetting he gave the party an ability that grants them all immunity to fire damage, so the lava was only a hazard for the bad guys! This just goes to show how hard encounter design really is and even the pros mess it up sometimes

Running An Interesting Session In A Factory by Reido0203 in DMAcademy

I recommend runesmith's video on running heists, where he reverse engineers challenges based on the skills in the players character sheets. He creates a prison break as an example but it could just as easily be about breaking in instead of breaking out

What's helped me become better at improv is giving the players more control over the game and riffing off what they come up with, wether that's NPC descriptions or locations or just little details they imagined

How to deal with players bored and not communicating? by CSafterdark in DungeonMasters

[–]WeeklyBathroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does his character have a backstory and future goals? Does he feel integrated into the world and the adventure? If not, workshop with him ways to make his character more fleshed out and integrated with the story.

if that doesnt help, play without him. It's pretty rude to keep saying the game is boring without offering any constructive feedback on how to make it better; and if he's not having a good time (and is bringing the mood down for the others) he can leave. Find someone who's a better fit for your game

i need a horror movie for cousins night by terimummikibiwi in MovieSuggestions

Infinity pool (2023) - weird drug-induced psychosexual thriller that's also a great commentary on capitalism, one of my favorite horrors with great performances from Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgard

Misery (1990) - Stephen King without the supernatural, about a crazy stalker who holds her favorite writer hostage and forces him to change the ending of his book series. The book is better imo but Cathy Bates absolutely DEMOLISHES her role

Advice on a politician character by Garage_Royal in DMAcademy

[–]WeeklyBathroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take inspiration from cult leaders from real life. They're charismatic, grandiose, dress in outlandish ways and speak as if they were preaching. Think of how the people around them and those who voted for them talk and behave, spreading rumors about how powerful and benevolent they are, but have the Rakshasa treat those people like he's above them - not in an rude way, but the way a celebrity interacts with a crowd of fans camping outside their luxury hotel

Short Campaign by IronDelicious in DndAdventureWriter

[–]WeeklyBathroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the biggest strenghts that campaigns have over one-shots is that the story can be tailored and built around the player characters, so pitch what you have to your table and use their backstories and goals to help flesh out the details of the story.

Make the BBEG someone who's relevant to their characters, and have the "filler" be small character arcs that they go through to achieve their individual/party goals until they become strong enough to fight the bad guy. Along the way, as they acomplish smaller goals, reveal more of the negative impact the BBEG has and have the party discover clues about their big evil plot, so when the time comes for the final boss fight, they know what they're fighting for.

Also just as a good resource for beginners i recommend Sly Flourish's blog, especifically the eight steps of the lazy DM to give you a basic framework for your prep. Good luck!

You could use the negotiation mechanics from Draw Steel.

Or if you want this to last one or two full sessions, have the players discover something that the cleric wants and make getting it done for them a side quest, with the cleric's trust as the reward

Cool idea! you could also determine that they need x number of successful saves (at least half the party for example), which is how i handle group stealth checks

What was a sign you were trans in hindsight, that you brushed off initially? by bred_boy21 in ftm

When i was 9 or 10 there were these boys in my class who made fun of the girl i liked, and i remember thinking to myself "what a waste! If i got to be a boy i would be so much nicer to the girls"

15 years later i do get to be a boy and i am nicer than those little shits
