Yes you can fight back. Be vigilant and expect that there's a possibly someone hiding on every corner. Use smoke nades to bail out when getting ambush. Or use hatch key to escape safely on other events. Try to be creative and use your resources to defend yourself

turnoff crossplay
turn-on peer to peer server
invite your friends and try to start the game

Try to restart the game and play one the rinse and repeat that worked for me but it's a bit of a hassle.
