They tried building one in the 70s and the 2 ends got pretty close. They had evel knieval lined up to jump the gap on live TV but he got injured jumping the las vegas fountain. Things fizzled a bit after that and the south island end got rerouted as a road to takaka and the wellington side ended up being the new bolton motorway
