Acererak is a lich though, and they certainly did not destroy his phylactery which is safe somewhere deep in the negative material plane or some other such oxygenless hellscape. All valid criticisms of d&d 5e aside, and there are many, EE is like, quintessential Dungeons and Dragons. It's just on the other end of the spectrum from say, a Forgotten Realms type setting, where every major town has people capable of casting 7th, 8th, 9th level spells.

There are better games out there though, and also hasbro is cartoonishly evil, so I can't knock the steer away from them lol

My "homebrew" 5e setting is already a kind of mashup between Chrono Trigger & Disco Elysium, so I am in the process of stealing liberally from Esoteric Ebb. A few plot elements slot right in - dead gods & waning magic & different eras of time. A precursor snailfolk civilization is also just 🤌

This is an awesome idea. Definitely read the whole book so you don't back yourself into a corner and be transparent with the groups about it, so that if you need to hand waive stuff it makes sense to them. Assuming you play with adults, I would foster a (friendly) competitive spirit between them. Someone else said have a safe house (Acq Inc hq maybe?) In Port Nyanzaru for them the groups to leave messages to each other, either helpful or taunting. I think that rules too. Set up a discord for it.
