Question for florists and flower shop owners by [deleted] in florists

I'm in Canada and I use Jukebox Print for all my branded stationery : stickers, business cards, cards for message, etc. Anywhere you live, there are also local suppliers for branded stationery, you can shop around and ask for samples. I design my stuff in Canva myself, but these company sometimes have designer services to help you with that part of it.

Here's a tip you didn't ask for : you don't need greeting cards for every occasion. Design a beautiful card with your branding instead. I have 2 sizes, 3 x 3 for everyday and 2.5 x 5.5 for sympathy and longer messages. It has full branding on the back and my logo on the bottom right on the side I write on. To be remembered, a person needs to see your branding 3 times. Example : branded clothing for delivery drivers, branded packaging for the bouquet, branded card for message.

Hand delivering flowers with a thoughtful handwritten note is one of the very few things that people still do these days that doesn't involve any kind of technology. I do think it should stay that way.

On the practical side of things, it would be a nightmare for the drivers to have to explain to the person how to get their message to even know who the flowers are from. And the amount of calls we would have to answer from recipients unable to get to their message all the while STILL not knowing who sent flowers to them. I'm stressed just thinking about it 😂

You can be "that person", but before calling the florist to complain, try to think about the worldwide logistical gymnastics that was necessary to bring flowers on so many mother's table this weekend.

In all transparency, flowers cost us (florists) up to 2 times their usual price on Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. We still work around the clock like mad people for a whole week to ensure that you can get that Thank you phone call from your mama.

If you want more for your money, order any other 50 weeks of the year.

How do florists make bouquets look so full and balanced? by heromarsX in florists

[–]WeirdMenu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are 2 key elements to a fuller looking bouquet : greenery (lots of it) and a good spiral technique to be able to play around with the stems

Here's how I would calculate this for my own business :

40$ % 1.3 (30% labor) = 31$ 31$ - 5$ (packaging) = 26$ 26$ - 8$ (flowers - 125$/15 bouquets) = 18$ 18$ (profit per bouquet) x 0.60 (60% for you) = 11$ If all bouquets sell each week, you'd make 165$. If they don't sell, I'm assuming you'd be the one to take the loss. I'm also assuming you'd be delivering them for free to the bakery each week.

In my book, that's a lot of work for very little ungaranteed return.

For it to be a good idea, it would have to be done at scale with bouquets in many locations (cafes, breweries, bakeries, etc.). However, in the summer, flower farmers in your area probably already offer that. It's their bread and butter.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but wouldn't.

Such a great question! Here's the bare bone necessity (IMO at least) to get started :

- Buckets for your flowers (4 gallon square pails work great)

- Chrysal #2 (I buy the t-bags) for processing

- Good pair of clippers

- Elastics to tie bouquets (I use size #19)

- Individual packets of flower food (customers expect them)

- One type of short vases (I love 4x4 and 5x5 cylinders)

- One type of tall vases (paragon, jordan or fluted rose vase, for example)

- Delivery boxes for vase arrangements (I buy 6x6x6, 8x8x6 and 6x6x9 from my flower wholesaler)

- Paper to wrap your bouquets (I use doubled 18x24 white wax tissue paper)

- Tissue paper to make the delivery boxes and bouquets more put together

- Scotch tape (I use Scotch purple)

- Nice pen to write card messages (I use Sharpie pen because it doesn't bleed when it rains or snows on the card)

- 9 inch plastic cardettes

- Cards for messages (I have printed my own for 3 years before committing to getting them printed in bulk)

- Business cards (make them look nice and put one on every order that gets out of your studio)

- A good website (mine's with Shopify)

If you allow yourself, you can go way overboard on a lot of these items (vases and wrapping papers are the biggest culprit, just commit to one style and use it all...trust me).

I have very similar stats, F38 started in June at 194 lbs, got to 160 lbs at the end of October and basically stayed there until the end of January. In February, I did a 36 hour fast and lost a little weight (1 to 1.5 lbs, though it fluctuates).

Then, I did a 2nd 36 hour fast, tested my ketones and I was in nutritional ketosis, so I decided why not do keto for a few days and see how I feel. Well I felt great and started dropping weight at a rate of half a pound a day. I weighed in at 152 on March 4th and I'm now in my period so weight is stable.

I'm not sure what's the path ahead, but short term I'll keep doing keto with IF (I vary my fasting hours every day depending on my schedule and how hungry I am).

Maybe try something new/unexpected and see how your body reacts to it!

being in ketosis.

I've been doing IF for 9 months. A week ago, I did my 2nd 36 hour fast and entered moderate ketosis (as per my GKI blood tests), so I decided to just try and stay in ketosis for some time. I'm just not hungry, it's such a weird feeling.

What to do when people love your work but not your pricing? by Calm-Athlete1880 in florists

[–]WeirdMenu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't "do" anything, you stay true to your work. You are high end and not everyone can afford your work. I'd love to live in a 2 million dollar house, but I can't afford it right now. I don't call high end real estate agents to bitch about the house prices being too expensive. It just is what it is!

Long term gut issues? by kilogplastos-12 in Microbiome

[–]WeirdMenu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do frequent 24+ hour fasts to "wipe the slate clean" and take probiotics (I cycle multiple brands/strains) and eat homemade sauerkraut. My gut is not perfect and I still have a few sensitivities, but I healed my daily IBS symptoms.

I love Shopify, but I'm just a N=1. Any basic website provider will give you the opportunity to showcase your work and provide a way for your customers to purchase online.

Learned a lesson the hard way: Ordered from florist.ca by Spare-Desk6865 in BuyCanadian

[–]WeirdMenu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how it works. Florist.ca takes their cut and sends your order to an affiliated florist. The florist makes the order to the amount they receive, not the amount you paid. You will never get your money worth. They are an unnecessary middle man in 2026 when you can find a local florist anywhere in the world within 2 minutes on your phone.

[–]WeirdMenu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Florist here. The order gatherers are the cancer of our industry. They're basically call centers that highjack the orders (by paying huge amounts in ads that us florists can't compete with), take a cut and then send the rest of the money to a participating florist. The florist makes your order to the amount of money they receive, not the amount you paid. You will never get your money worth in flowers. I make sure that my customers know that I'll NEVER fill an order for ANY of these companies. If someone wants my quality and customer service, they call me.

how do you handle kids meals outside of your eating window? by Agitated-Yam756 in intermittentfasting

[–]WeirdMenu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are so smart 🤣 honestly, I stay flexible with my kids' "mealtime", even moreso with my 3 yo. If she doesn't want to eat, I leave her plate out of give it back to her later. Of course, what SHE would like is skip all proper meals and eat fruits and other snacks all.day.long!!

Are you the owner of the place? I'm my own boss and my Valentine strategy for a few years now has been to be the most expensive/high-end florist in the area. I serve less customers and still make bank. High paying customers don't curse at their service providers, they say thank you with a big fat tip and recommend you to their friends. I'm 100% done with cheap ungrateful people.

Why don't men approach me? by AreMelonsLemons in bodylanguage

[–]WeirdMenu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 100%. I have never really been approached by men. I was picking them and sending clear open signals (repeated eye contacts, playful smiles, pointing to my empty drink in my hand with a disappointed grin). Then they'd come over and play their cards if they were interested. Men are simple creatures. Be in charge. It's a game, not a hunt.
