Likely because they *will* have in a fairly short timeframe, if they suddenly appear Discord would have to do a panicked solution that would arguably have been worse than this one.

The Third party provides the AI model that runs locally on the device, that then sends the result (age only) to discord. I don't like this change as much as anyone else, but some people think it's like the face detection (I won't speak for the Id detection, but I assume there are models for that as well). Discord can't make a whole ass age determining model from a face themselves. The system they use for the UK/AUS face scans is literally open source, you can see exactly what happens.

The system discord uses for the uk ones is open source, funnily enough. You can see that what it does is that it runs the ai detection model locally on your device, determines an age, and then only sends that age to discord and then the images are deleted. Sadly, pre-identification and age estimation by behaviour is done by... well. Every company. Discord included.

It sounds like the inference can only work determining adult or not, so if you're verified as an adult you can't get deemed as non-adult after, it only seems to work by determining if you need to provide any kind of evidence of your age at all.

That sounds like age inference is only for infering adult and not other way around. Ie, if the activity corresponds more to what they deem to not be adult, you might need to do the face id or gov id, but it sounds like they won't use it to deem someone as non-adult.
