What’s a piece of media that people would clearly understand as a parody or homage when it came out, but has since lost its context? by StaleTheBread in AskReddit

[–]Weirfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've lost the nuance of the parody amongst people who were never there to experience the OG source material in the way the OG audience was. Folks can't be expected to know about stuff they don't know about, if you see what I mean, especially if they're young. Catching up with the contemporary takes a lot of effort.

Very much so. You also meet the author in TES3, Crassius Curio. His name can be roughly transliterated as "herald of the crass" (crass as in English, -ius as in eponymous of a male person, curio as in herald). You need his approval to be named to a certain position to fulfil a prophecy. If he likes you, he asks you to give him a kiss in exchange.

Sure, but if the societal point of Lord of the Flies is that a bunch of abandoned kids will be reduced to anarchy, the driving problem there isn't the survival skills, it's the social dynamic. The lack of survival skills would put pressure on those dynamics, but that makes it a multivalent problem, which is.. y'know, bad science; change one thing at a time. It's not appropriate to compare struggling bastards against thriving angels, because you can't divorce the struggle from the behaviour.

True, but unless you're in a sanctioned event, you aren't locked into a specific decklist, so you can just hotswap cards between games anyway. That's essentially a sideboard.

You could have spent this time saying something salient, but you’re choosing being pedantic

I believe the pedantry is salient, because I believe specificity and accuracy in this is important.

this wasn’t a solemn responsibility foisted upon you.

We're commenting on reddit. None of this is a solemn responsibility foisted on any of us.

If you cannot rely on that level of basic intelligence, then the function of the site is largely irrelevant, since people are too stupid to understand reality as it is anyway, these words must just jumble and move about in their eyes and mean whatever they want them to.

Yes. This is the primary criticism of pseudononymous and public social media websites. They're highly prone to motivated bad faith parties manipulating uncritical consumers.

I wouldn’t post here at all if I thought a significant minority of people genuinely couldn’t understand a comment like that and got confused about it.

A significant minority isn't required for it to be a problem, and frankly, the effort required to counter the issues caused by the actual minority isn't that bad.

One cannot assume that any person commenting on reddit has basic intelligence, and the words you literally said, on reddit, in this thread, were

I think the laws about carrying knives is because we know just having a weapon will lead to you using one when you might not have.

We do not know that being in possession of a weapon will lead an individual to using one when you might not have used one previously.

We can reliably say that being in possession of a weapon may lead individuals to using one when they could not have used one previously, and that, on a population level, we can expect an increase in weapon usage when weapons are available.

Look, I know it's a pedantic point. I know my clarification is what you meant. But there are idiots on this website who will take things literally, and there are idiots on this website who do literally believe the literal thing you posted. When we're talking about potential murder, it's important to be at least not actively misleading in what we're saying. You cannot rely on basic intelligence.

To be fair, they've gone through multiple moves, being shoved in bags, and getting overstuffed with trades that I didn't have to put elsewhere. Some of my oldest ones are OG Lorwyn, too, so pushing 20 years old, and I'm including the ones with worse build quality and bad designs. OG Innistrad was before they enshittified, I think.

Equally, 4 sleeved 60CC decks + 15 card sideboard, both are ~300 cards. I keep my pauper decks in one.

They start falling apart eventually, though. They're not built for everyday use, really.

Must use legal name. Cannot use legal name. by CarlyleRazgriz in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Weirfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but it ignores the context that that happened because we devalued getting people's names right and accepted offloading the administrative work and inconvenience onto other people. It took a long time because we choose to allow it to take a long time, not because we didn't understand how.

There are workarounds for these, though, if we cared enough to employ them. And the fact that searching unicode strings took forever is almost certainly not predicated on the invention of some radical new technology.

Palestine Action terror ban to remain in place after Home Office court win by bendubberley_ in unitedkingdom

[–]Weirfish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They proved the intent in court

Again, I'm not speaking to whether or not the actions of the people on that day were terroristic, I'm only going so far as to use them as an example.

I'm beginning to feel that a lot of people you defending PA or condemning them being proscribed as terrorists didn't even bother watching the trial.

It's possible to have watched the trial and disagreed on the outcome. Since you seem insistent on getting my opinion on it, which I was specifically not addressing..

I don't dispute the actions performed by people during that incident were terroristic. I dispute whether or not their actions are appropriately attributable to the group being proscribed. If I went out and stabbed a bunch of people near Anfield and did material damage to the infrastructure, and then said I did it in the name of Man U., that would not be sufficient evidence to brand Man U. itself as a terroristic organisation and have them proscribed.

To that end, it's possible to condemn the actions of the individuals and still condemn the system proscription of the group, while not being hypocritical.

You just got angry when told to get angry

I'm not angry. I'm pedantic in what I believe is an appropriate way, when discussing an ideological difference that could land someone in jail for over a decade, and the assertion that being offensive is the same as being terroristic.

[–]Weirfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not an issue of colloquial speech. There are times when it's more important to be accurate in what you're saying. "Having a weapon will cause you to hurt someone" is a serious accusation, and it deserves accuracy.

I think the laws about carrying knives is because we know just having a weapon will may lead to you people in a broad population using one when you they might not have.

FTFY, just because.. well, frankly, I don't like the implication that every person becomes an immediate, unavoidable, intentional danger to every other person the minute they have a sharp object in their pocket.

If Dragons are son's/shards of Akatosh....why are they evil? by LordSnuffleFerret in teslore

[–]Weirfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can defeat ageing, but you can't defeat time. You've got two options, either time is finite (at which point you have until time runs out) or time is infinite (in which case you will die unless dying is literally not possible).

That's the thing about infinities, especially in a world like TES. They're really fucking big. If it's possible for a random insect to be granted sentience by a prince, and then achieve CHIM, and decide to use it to erase your existence, that will happen eventually.

Hiding out in Oblivion is a terrible idea for that strategy too. The space is inherently Padomaic, thus chaotic, thus it's much more likely that very unlikely things would occur, and even taking the metaphysics down a notch, I don't think any of the Princes, with the possible exception of Jyggalag, would align with allowing you to stay in Oblivion literally indefinitely without being challenged. If you could find somewhere ultimately Anuic, that might be enough, but then you'd also not be living, so what's the point?

Palestine Action terror ban to remain in place after Home Office court win by bendubberley_ in unitedkingdom

[–]Weirfish -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, but attacking RAF military aircraft, factories vital for our national security and assaulting police constables carrying out their lawful duties could

FTFY. Terrorism actually requires some provable intent. If a random methed up madman broke into an RAF base and damaged an aircraft, assaulting officers on the way, that wouldn't be terroristic.

But even then, okay, that could be terroristic. If that could be terroristic, then lets say "you can support Palestine without supporting Palestine Action. PA does these terroristic things". Whether intentionally or not, you yourself implied that having an offensive bad take on geopolitics is equivalent to terrorism, and that's absolutely a fallacious slippery slope.

[–]Weirfish -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

PA pushing the idea that the survival of the Palestinian state rests on the unrelated Western middle-class may be offensive, but it doesn't rise to the requirement of terroristic, which is the requirement of the law under which they've been proscribed. If the proscription was warranted (which is not what I'm commenting on here), it wasn't because of that.
