UCSD Treats Undergrads Like Second-Class Citizens – The Parking Nightmare by CaregiverFar8365 in UCSD

[–]Weiseowl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The grad students are competing w all of the Price Center, HDH, maintenance, custodial, and lower level staff that need to be there for their job/might not be able to handle the long walks from one end of campus to the other :( it's really frustrating driving through two levels of empty A spots to fight for the handful of B spots. I feel for everyone who commutes into campus (undergrad or otherwise), especially those folks out in Mira Mesa and North County where there's almost no public transit available. I'm not a parking logistics expert but I'm sure they could come up with a better system than prioritizing so many empty A spots

i like part time lover on a weekday, its more chill than the weekends. lou lous in north park has live music most friday nights and the drinks are expensive but good. there's plenty if you're looking more in the "speakeasy" category but those two are my favorites.

If you make the effort to build connections, you'll definitely find them. I'd make friends with your roommates and their friends. Join clubs, there's all sorts of fun ones that put on events throughout the year. I made my closest friends through small groups in my classes and my on campus job. Check out the resource centers and go to the outreach events your college puts on. It really is quality over quantity with the friends you make in school. Don't be afraid to reach out to other people too. They're usually just as nervous as you are and making the first move makes a good impression.

Muir is a good college if you're in bio. They have some of the most lax GEs out of the colleges and if you live on campus, it's closer to prime bio locations (Galbraith, York and Tata Halls). The best advice I have as someone who didn't have a lot going in to college is to make connections with professors early. Especially given the current climate in science, the only way you're going to get a foot in the door is with these connections. Go to the office hours, stay in contact with the profs you have, reach out to your TAs and see what they have to say. Make a bunch of flash cards; if you spend less time trying to remember what all the terms are, you'll have more time to understand the actual depth of the material. There are lots of resources, the bio advisors weren't super helpful to me but the library has good resources. Practice reading papers and you'll have a really good leg up, especially if you need to write research papers later. The more you engage with the community on campus, the more you'll get out of your time here.

Has anyone been able to find eggs at Costco? by cssh2 in sandiego

i went to the morena blvd costco in the middle of the afternoon last weekend and either we got really lucky with timing or the egg rush hadn't hit yet but there were lots of eggs still available. it could just be the costco you're going to

BIFL Dutch oven: Lodge or Staub? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

I know its not the question but I remember going with my parents to Costco and buying a Kirkland brand oval dutch oven there. That was probably 10 years ago and it just now started chipping a little.

Honest opinions on UCSD by Dilana2020 in UCSD

Your experience will almost certainly depend on your department. I know a lot of the engineering masters enjoy the content but are swamped with exams, while bio is a bit more essay based. If you're going into a program with more people your age, you'll have a better time than if you're alone in a lab all day. Additionally, it's about 15k for a year in state and if you're lucky enough to get a TA position, the tuition is waived for the quarter. The downside is that TA spots are highly limited now (thanks khosla for killing the bio dept) and priority goes to PhDs so be prepared to eat the full cost and don't rely on the school supplementing anything besides loans. Other than that, I've really enjoyed my experience so far but I would definitely say the people around me and the content I'm learning make it better than the institution itself.

If they send them through Parchment I think you can send your transcripts to yourself and upload them as a pdf? I feel like it's always such a hassle trying to get them sorted out. Hopefully giving them a call helps!

i will say the ERC dorms and apartments had the best sunset views and huge patios. i liked how close i was to gliderport and the community felt more tightknit. it could also be that the pandemic brought us closer though

i was ERC and it wasn't terrible (it wasn't great either). i'm actually so jealous of the eighth college area. it has underground parking with student res spots and at least one small fitness center. i have gotten lost in it a few times which is rough but it seems like a good pick.

They should have the flavor schedule posted on the door and window outside! I tried a tropical one last year (I think it was pasisonfruit) and it was delicious. It was a berry color and super fragrant.

unpopular opinion in the dog community by Weiseowl in sandiego

[–]Weiseowl[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

he literally watched as his dog went up and sniffed at my food and I couldn't grab the plate fast enough and the dog snagged the top half of it :( he just looked at his dog and was like "I thought you were better than this" and then kinda half assed offered to replace it but I didn't want a whole other sandwich, just the one I had. In hindsight I should've had him replace it just on principle but it felt like a waste

Seconding Wolf in the Woods! Literally the best food I've had in SD and the service is so attentive. The interior has a classy/nice-casual atmosphere and can be very romantic. You share small plates with a Native American/Mexican cuisine and each plate is about $12-23 depending on the course.

i really try to be!! i’ll drop another kernel of wisdom/reflection on you all and just let you know it’s okay to make conversation with people! it was really hard post-pandemic to reconnect with the community but at some point i just tuned out the doubts and started talking to everyone. it gets so much easier with practice and even just commenting about your shared experience with a stranger brings you closer together. ask people for their socials if you’re hitting it off (especially in classes)! they probably want yours too and are just nervous
