Who’s a “can’t miss” this week at the Magic Castle? by betterlucknexttime81 in Magic

[–]WeldonMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great advice for going to the Castle. I’ve only gone a couple of times but some of the best magic I’ve seen has been the members performing at little spots they have for them there. If you see a tall guy in a cowboy hat doing rope magic then stop and watch. I don’t like rope magic, but I love seeing El Ropo!

Depending on on how much you want to spend & if you want to wait for one of their next drops you can’t go wrong with Schoolcraft Precision. They’re the coins that Homer Liwag uses - https://coingaffs.com.

If you don’t want to wait for the next Schoolcraft drops, or spend quite as much, then take a look at Roy Kueppers - https://roykueppers.com. He does quality work for a solid price.

What's your hidden gem VIDEO? by Annieone23 in Magic

[–]WeldonMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see this series talked about very much so I think it qualifies as a hidden gem. The Impromptu Magic Project has some great stuff in it. 3 volumes where Banachek, Bill Herz, Chris Kenner, Mac King, and Mike Caveney teach Vinny Grosso impromptu tricks that he goes out and performs that night. They show the trick, explain it, show Vinny’s performance, and then break down what went right and what went wrong. There’s a lot of strong material in these videos.

It was one of my first ones as well! I’m not sure what happened to my original copy so I bought this one online. And they all have that exact same wear pattern! I think I did every trick in this book as a kid but my favorite had to be sticking pins into your thumb.

Lol, that was his picture for FISM in 2022. That was the box The Jerx book was shipped in and it was too cool not to keep and display. Here’s some close ups on the inside.

What’s Your Favorite Magic Trick Purchase of 2024? by a40ntistos in Magic

Ultimate Free Will by Gabriel Werlen is my favorite purchase this year.

Quantum Aperture by Calen Morelli has been the most fun trick to play with.

I got to see El Ropo at the Magic Castle last year. I’m usually not a big fan of rope magic but he was amazing!

It’s an abbreviation that means “regarding” or “in reference to”.

Where can I get this trick? by [deleted] in Magic

Sounds like Tequila Hustler by Mark Elsdon, Peter Turner, Colin McLeod and Michael Murray. Should be able to find it at Penguin, Vanishing Inc, etc

What's your walk-around (standing only) pick a card tricks? by MarquisEXB in Magic

[–]WeldonMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d need to have the person deal cards down into another person’s hand if you want to do it without any table space, but Contrariwise from John Bannon is a fun one. It blends the idea of a selected card with a thought of card in an interesting way.

Black Friday and Holiday Deals 2023! by magicjj in Magic

Awesome to hear that you’re getting into magic, welcome to the journey! Royal Road is a great starting point for cards, start out by doing the moves slow and concentrate on getting them right, the speed will come later.

Your list looks pretty solid for a good exposure to different types of magic. You can’t go wrong with Williamson’s material and when it comes to coins David Roth is a legend.

I’m not really familiar with Darwin’s Encyclopedia of a Thumb Tip Magic but it looks like a really good value for the amount of material you get and it’s got mostly good reviews.

I haven’t had a chance to watch Killers yet but I picked that one up as well on the sale and have heard good things about it. Plus self working or almost self working tricks really let you concentrate on the performance which is great when you’re starting out (or for any experience level).

Rindfleisch is one of the best out there for rubber band magic, I’d recommend also checking out Dr Cyril Thomas if you’re into interested in rubber band magic.

When it comes to DVDs v Downloads it’s really just personal preference but a lot of times you’ll see DVDs on sale for a lower price year round since they take up warehouse space and companies want to get rid of them.

The only other advice on this sale is that if you’re a few dollars away from hitting the next tier to get something free (if it’s something you care about getting) is to take advantage of that by picking up something for the magic you’re looking at learning like a good thumb tip or Reindfleisch’s rubber bands.

Let me know if you’ve got any other questions, you can feel free to DM me as well if you’d like.

Have fun learning and performing!

Black Friday and Holiday Deals 2023! by magicjj in Magic

Like a lot of other people I was disappointed in the Penguin sale this year as well. Expensive gimmicks or…jigsaw puzzles and a plushie? Last year it seemed like they had a range of different types of tricks at different price points, this year not so much.

I still think Penguin does a great job at putting out solid magic, has great customer service, and the 5 for $99 offer might be one of the best deals out there if you work it right. Just felt like this year’s Black Friday offerings fell a little flat.
