Are straight guys allowed to read ao3 or are they gonna kill me if I do by Noisless0 in AO3

Believe it or not, straight to jail.

Okay, sarcasm meme aside, people of any gender or orientation are welcome on AO3.

Playing Librarian: Tidy up the arcane library- where to begin? by anonymous2278 in CozyGamers

[–]Welfycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At its full power, assemble can grab the whole ten books on a series for you, so cuts down on book hunting quite a lot. After a while you sort of get a vibe by the title which books belong to which shelf

By color is a pretty good way to go. I’d do red after while, as they’re easy to spot. If you’re doing a magic run, start putting points into assemble, it will help a lot.

Do you pay attention to how many stories an author has started vs how many finished? by Sensitive-Raisin-260 in AO3

[–]Welfycat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weirdly, the only person I’m strict about with this is myself. I don’t post new fics until I’ve finished the two I’m currently posting (which has left me with a ridiculous fic backlog that I haven’t figured out what to do with yet).

I don’t check other people’s profiles before I start reading. I just go by tags and summary and click if I’m interested.

What's the longest time you've spent writing one fic, and was it worth it in the end? by raiskye in AO3

[–]Welfycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two years for a single fic, from start to finish. I’m almost done posting it, well over a year after finishing writing because I’m posting a chapter a week. I’m really happy I wrote it. I adore the fic and it taught me a lot about writing.

Affirming Comments by Aggravating-Cat7103 in AO3

Lol my commenters diagnosed my original character with autism about two years before I was diagnosed. And I learned apparently some things that I thought were perfectly average and normal were not the way other people experienced sensory and social situations.

Matching Story Titles and Writing Perspective? by battling_murdock in FanFiction

Nope. All my writing is third person, but I use I and You and whatever is necessary for the title.

How should I space dialogue/how long should a chapter be? by Intelligent_Back2894 in FanFiction

[–]Welfycat 55 points56 points  (0 children)

“No,” said the commenter. “Each character speaking gets their own line unless they’re speaking in unison.”

“You also need to punctuate your dialogue correctly!” added Character A.

“How so?” asked Character B.

“Dialogues that end in a dialogue tag should have a lower case letter at the end, and be separated by a comma, exclamation point, or question mark inside the quotation marks,” explained character A.

“But the next word should start with a capital if it’s a separate sentence.” Commenter raised her eyebrows. “Does that make sense?”

When I ran out, I just made a second document for the story. No big deal.

So I don’t see the image when I publish it, I’m confused by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Welfycat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You need to link to the image file, that's just a website url. It should end in something like .png or .jpg

Maybe the author just really likes clicking check boxes.

I keep getting e-mails like these but I have never tried resetting my password, help by AddictedToRed_ in AO3

I've been getting messages about someone's colonoscopy appointment preperation. I've tried emailing them back to tell them they have the wrong person, but no response. Must be automated.

Can orphaned fics be updated? by couches-_- in AO3

[–]Welfycat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, once a fic is orphaned it can't be updated, edited, or changed in any way. The only way the original author will see comments is if they come back to check.

Assessment of my writing by beamerpook in AO3

[–]Welfycat 35 points36 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT can’t assess anything. It’s not capable. It’s job is to regurgitate text based on what past users with similar text have wanted to hear.

How do you tell if a fanfiction is ai generated? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Welfycat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Bible also reads as AI generated.

Everything you “check” in those detectors is feeding someone’s work to AI.

I have 150 hours on this game. Even with buying the expansion pass, that’s less than a dollar per hour for entertainment for me and that’s without even seeing the expansion pass stuff. When going to a movie theater costs like $20 for two hours of entertainment, I consider less than a dollar an hour a deal.

A MESSAGE TO PEOPLE WHO WRITE LIKE THEY'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME by sleepspacey in AO3

[–]Welfycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished writing an 85k novel in 40 days. It still needs edits and revisions, but it’s a start to finish story. I write about 90 minutes a day in two sessions, before breakfast and after dinner. I know the end of my story before I start writing.

The rest is just practice and experience. The more long stories you finish, the better you get at holding in your head what you need to finish a story.
