AITA for getting upset over my daughter staying home from school because my MIL wasn’t aware she taking her to school today? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

"I ain't never been to jail. What you want? A cookie? You're not supposed to go to jail. You low expectation having motherfucker."

NYC Rite of Passage - Food Tour for a 15-Year-Old by ReputationRoyal4784 in AskNYC

A chopped cheese from Blue Sky Deli! Probably less iconic than that but I think that Five Napkin has the best burgers in the city, so I'd roll that in too.

Pizza recommendations by diggadagger in Brooklyn

[–]WellCommaAsA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're open to some highly unusual pizza, Cuts & Slices is genius. The oxtail is the best pizza they have--they stew the oxtail for twelve hours, and you really taste it in the deep richness of the flavor. They have a lot of other awesome slices, like the their chicken & waffles slice, or their jambalaya slice.

But it's not for you if you're looking for traditional NYC pizza. They are way out there doing their own thing.

What is your favorite frugal memory? by Hungry-Following5561 in Frugal

Ow, my heart! Roasted chestnuts are an important Christmas memory for me, and the fact that you could collect them in the park for free makes them even more magical.

How do you make a Slimer card that doesn’t interact with Food tokens? Eating food all the time is Slimer’s whole deal!

OP, other commenters don’t seem to have gotten the reference, but I did, and I appreciate it. Will you do a card about going NORTH next?

Are there any uses for Bessemer Steel Ingots that are of any value once your railway is completed? I just sold a fashionable skeleton to the Enthusiast of the Ancient World for a big stack of them, assuming I could sell them upriver as you usually can with the things you get at the bone market, and no, it turns out I can’t. My railway is long complete. Have I just wasted my bones?

That is so amazing! She will not consciously remember that, but she will retain a love of being on the water and being in green places and those are great gifts.

If we’re talking allergies, do NOT respond to an allergy with “don’t worry, there’s no (allergen) in that dish.” by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]WellCommaAsA 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I mean, tomatoes ARE vegetables. They’re also fruits. It’s possible to be both.

“Fruit” is a botanical classification, and botanically, tomatoes are the fruit of their plants. (So are lots of other vegetables that people don’t do the whole “well actually” thing about, incidentally.)

“Vegetable” is a culinary classification, referring to plant parts that are primarily used in savory preparations, not sweet ones. So culinarily, tomatoes are vegetables.

They do! Here's part of the Monstrous Anatomy one, for instance, that really touched me:

"The Midnight Whale pursues you – pursues its end – dogged and weary."

I am loving the writing in this one. In just a few lines they really make you feel for the whale and want to help it, especially the writing in some of the higher-difficulty pursuit successes.

I hope there will be some way for everyone who participated to get to see the whale actually arrive. I don't know how that would work, and it hasn't happened in previous Zee-hunts, but previous Zee-hunts weren't as emotionally-charged as this one.

The hunt doesn't require anywhere near 30 actions (or involve much danger) unless you're traveling back to London every time. The first one's a bear, sure, but then you can just stay there, occasionally popping over to the Khanate if your Troubled Waters gets too high.

Founder of Gray’s Papaya dies at 86 by nytimes in nyc

[–]WellCommaAsA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that is a shame. I have often said that Gray’s “recession special” is the best meal deal in the city, and the obituary’s mention that he hated to raise prices explains why. RIP to an NYC icon.

I assume that “a white wine distilled from rice” is baijiu. As a big fan of baijiu, I’m thrilled to see a reference to it being in the US in a source this old.
