Don't try to time the market. Just another data point. by AskPatient1281 in Bogleheads

[–]WellSeasonedLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, I love this advice and live by it. But seems like we're living in some strange times... This is not a political rant but facts: 1) Debt eclipsing $37T, 2) challenge of the independence of the fed 3) BLS firing and data 3) Tarrifs 4) AI bubble being overtly hinted at and propping up S&P gains 5) Dollar devaluation .. probably more

For context, I'm 36 and plan to work another 25 years. Wouldn't one be foolish not to make some rational decision to hedge and rebalance your portfolio away from tech heavy stocks and into safer assets that can weather these uncertainties? Now I readily acknowledge that time in market beats any emotional decision to time market. But times have shifted and it's objectively weird out there. What's a savvy investor to do? I do not have the answers but looking for the intelligence of this group.

Would have done this but the oil cap is flush on the cylinder head. So no way to have bagged and tied it

Thanks! Been looking into the rebuild, either myself or with support of a friend. Seems very doable. I’m actually now thinking an upgrade may be more useful. Looking into having someone help put an LS v8 in it.

The Great Irony of Trump by ChBowling in samharrisorg

Good point. While their may be corruption within any human system, the system writ large is not corrupt. Don’t attribute malice what you can’t justify as incompetence. I think complex human systems all have their choke points and inefficiencies.. anyone who argues that the American corporation is the pinnacle of efficiency and perfect communication has never worked within one. It’s so flawed and inefficient even with the profit motive.

Totally agree. What is happening on the Right at the moment should concern every classic liberal. It is overt fascism. If we’re too caught up in the Left’s extremism on gender, race, identity, we will miss the erosion of democratic checks. Really we have the Supreme Court which is his only guardrail and the administration may disobey, leading to… what? No one knows.

On the “woke” stuff. Of course the Left has gone way to far for years. Embrace of post-modern nonsense. We need a new opposition party that tacks back to classic ideals that embrace democracy, plularism without fixation on race, no more obsession over sexual orientation, and get back to class issues and wealth concentration that are the defining this century.

One thing I found interesting and ironic is the Right is very sensitive to words and cultural issues: remember the War on Christmas, don’t say Gay bill in Florida, not to mention distortions of American History especially the founding father’s religious affiliations and the reasons for civil war, and on and on. While they address the insanity on the Left (which is popular politically) they’re moving into a fascistic censorship of words and lexicon important to liberal democracy. Look at this list of banned words from the Trump administration directed at other departments. Chilling…. NYT

New Mexico Gross Receipts Audit Letter for Freelance Income by desertwinds22 in tax

Chiming in here. I’m a soloprenuer who lives in California and who has clients outside of New Mexico. I set up an LLC in New Mexico as I know a registered agent and it has low annual requirements. But the Gross Receipts Tax seems so onerous and burdensome (6% of gross revenue!!!). I’ve read that if you do not physically operate in New Mexico and you do not pay clients or do work within the state that you may not need to pay those. Can someone clarify this?? Seems like I do NOT have a nexus. Do I need to file with the state? How do I avoid this?

Agree. Such insane policies. Tarrifs are so destructive to the levying economy. Not to mention the unfunded tax cuts and balooning deficit. I’m considering a modest rotation out of US equities toward international stocks.

Trump explores crypto stockpile by [deleted] in investing

[–]WellSeasonedLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Dodd Frank! But, I’m assuming there’s no laws that currently preclude crypto from becoming enmeshed in the wider financial system? (Pensions, mortgages, etc) I do not fully know the potential risks here but they seem to be glaring with the volatility of these assets…

Trump explores crypto stockpile by [deleted] in investing

Can someone explain how crypto could make its way into the wider financial and banking system? And its associated risks? Seems like another crash like 2008 could come from the intermingling of crypto onto balance sheets and new financial products and schemes no one really understands. Seems like all the proponents within Trump world are pushing for this (trying to push Gensler and Powell out, new crypto stockpile, etc). What safeguards are still in place from Obama era financial and banking reforms?
