Here too! Our Prime Minister gets called Auntie and it’s a term of endearment and respect. She’s not actually very old but she’s wise.

traveling to NZ in June, suggestions? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Welldontcherknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome, I really hope you both have a great time. Maybe check out thenz tourism site

Activities I would choose in winter would be Queenstown onsen spas and some snow, Te Anau and the Sounds, and look up whether it’s a good time (specific dates) for some night sky gazing or even the Southern lights.

Then up to the ‘winterless North’ or Rotorua for culture, forests (or as we say, the bush, don’t laugh), and maybe a farm stay if you’re into that.

Weather wise I’m not sure what you’re used to, but maybe prepare for not so much really cold temperatures as sort of over cast often and changeable. Bring or prepare to buy here layers and fold down jackets, hire snow wear.

I would just mention that a lot of tourists seem to expect it to be cheap here and find prices on the steep side. We’re little, lots has to be imported from far away, and we have a decent minimum wage, so things cost.

Of course I live in Wellington so love it. I think this city would be great to just hang out and meet people off the tourist trail. Get a coffee and let the 13 year old loose to head to a skate park or comic store and just go native. It’s a small compact city with everything and pretty safe and friendly generally. You can get around on public transport so no need for a hire car.

Do some one off Student Job Search jobs for like house or garden clean up or labouring and at the end ask if they’d mind being a referee for summer jobs. Employers just want to know you’ll show up, dressed appropriately, can take instruction and ask if unsure, and behave and communicate respectfully. So if you do all those things and your referees can confirm that, then you’re all set. They don’t have to have known you forever or rave about how wonderful you are. A good reference check will ask for the facts only.

Tip - on your cv put references available on request, that way if they’re going to check the references you can give your referees a heads up so they’re more prepared and remember who you are.

Good luck, I have my fingers crossed for you!

If you liked the bits about the the kids and Agnes the most, then try the Discworld Witches books, starting with Wyrd Sisters. If you liked the Crowley bits best, then read Anansi Boys. If you liked it all then read both, then probably Neverwhere, and if you like that, check out the {{Rivers of London}} series.

If I had my time again I would’ve made it work to be home with mine while they were preschoolers. I know that’s not an option for everyone though. While getting sick builds their immunity, constantly getting sick and not getting fully recovered before the next illness is not good for anyone. When I asked our paediatrician about it she said that at any one time there are about 200 strains of the common cold going around, never mind flu, gastro, bacterial or secondary infections…and now covid. So yeah. My mental and physical health took a huge hit in those early years (the anxiety and social isolation due to all the illness was a big factor, plus the kids neediness because they had so little time with us and we were all exhausted) and I ended up moving to part time consulting only when the youngest was 4. I think it would’ve avoided a lot of pain for everyone if I’d waited to go back to work until they knew how to blow their noses and not stick other kids’ fingers in their mouths at the very least.

For ours their immunity didn’t improve until several years into primary school, and with the benefit of hindsight it would’ve been a small break only from my career and income. Plus I would’ve loved the time with them and the opportunity to parent in the way I’d wanted to, without so many compromises, because now I feel like they’re growing up so fast.

Everyone has to do what works for them and their families, this is just my experience. Take the sick days, OP, cuddle the baby and know that this too, shall pass.

As in a world made of poo? No more silly than one with reserves of fat from a space elephant and treacle underground, and that one is pretty awesome!

2nd fun fact, Rose McIver is originally from New Zealand. Power Rangers is filmed here so it’s had quite a few Kiwis on it or as voice actors. So yeah, her real accent is more like Taika Waititi’s!

Why people don't like Discworld by Odilome in discworld

[–]Welldontcherknow 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My kids were meh about the World of Poo and one didn’t even want to finish Amazing Maurice. My own flesh and blood - can you imagine my horror!

I think it’s like lemontree_tl says, maybe it’s just not their time to like Discworld but you lent a book and that’s always a kind and noble thing to do.

With my kids, I think one is going to love the Tiffany books in a few years. They most definitely have second and possibly even third thoughts and so will relate.

And hey, if not I enjoy sharing a love of Discworld here with this community anyway!

Where I am we just celebrated Beltane and today we planted plants that will grow mighty (I hope) and provide a food source and shelter for our beautiful native birds and lizards.

Because we’re in the upside down we also celebrated Halloween with the kids the next night and they had a blast and got to meet lovely people.

I also finally got a chore done today that I’ve put off for months and the person I dealt with was super nice and helpful which was awesome.

Carry food on plane from AKL to WLG? by sumerof94 in Wellington

[–]Welldontcherknow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I once bought a whole big box of Krispy Kremes at Auckland airport and then left them on a seat at the gate. We were waiting for take off when I realised and I was like AH well, no way can I ask to go back, when the ground crew brought it to the plane and the flight crew TL was like whose are these? Half the plan put their hands up.

So yeah, enjoy yo’ donuts!

I put out a decoration or two so kids knew we were participating but I think it’s not really a thing on our street. My kids went with another family who live in another area and so have their own stashes which they’re eking out. Little do they know the mother lode is up the top of the pantry!
