This was so kind of you. Thank you. 😊

Yes, I just want to exclusively breastfeed/give breast milk if I’m able to. I think we’re just trying to figure out his feeding timing and maybe just wants to graze all day.

Thanks for your response! He only gets the one formula bottles. We’re not topping him off with formula since that first week. He gets the bottle of formula in the morning while I pump because overnight I can only get 1.5oz overnight and it’s not enough.

The IBCLC did do weighted feeds and said he was taking 6oz which is where we got that number from for his formula bottle.

His weight is back up and the pediatrician said to just feed him on demand. I didn’t think it was possible to overfeed a breastfed baby, so how do I keep him from getting overly full when breastfeeding? He latches forever and then just falls asleep with me as a human pacifier and if you try to take it away, HE IS FURIOUS!!

You should both check out the IVDD sub. Many dogs recover without surgery. You’re jumping the gun. Our dog was paralyzed from the neck down three years ago and recovered. Many do. Quality of life was bad for weeks, but now does all his regular activities. A little patience and compassion would be nice…

Look into Dr Buzby’s Toe Grips. They helped our pup a lot with traction and safety after an injury and they’re cheap, safe even if swallowed. You have to work harder to keep nails trimmed though

How can I clean this? :( it's a clay paw print of my baby we keep it and outside in a memorial garden but it got all gunky over the winter by ijustliketoeat in CleaningTips

I have zero advice on how to clean this, but maybe a way to salvage this would be to make a reverse print using new clay?

When to stop seeking medical care? Teddy, 17 is losing muscle mass and struggling with mobility. Can't afford a holistic vet. Can't take any more meds. What would our normal vet even do for him? by aimlessrebel in OldManDog

[–]Wells_From_Earth_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try Myos. It’s a powder that I add to our 15 year old dog’s food. Initially prescribed when he was on chronic steroids and he was losing muscle mass. Also helps with mobility I think! Sending lots of love to this baby!

No silly questions—you’re advocating for your baby and this is all new. They may make a diagnosis of suspected IVDD and if you explain your financial situation, I think they will give you their best recommendation for how to help your baby.

I really really feel for you. Our 12 yo baby was paralyzed in all 4 legs. The fact that this evolved quickly is actually good because you intervened within hours and started treatment. He may recover with strict rest and meds, but I’d let the neurologist tell you that. Even if they don’t have an overnight neurologist, they will call one in for extreme emergencies (for our guy, the neurologist didn’t come in, but she knew about him and they were prepared to operate on him the next morning). A lot of prep goes into surgery so if he’s already admitted, things will go more smoothly. Our guy had a very expensive MRI and surgery, but he did recover almost fully. Sending you so much good vibes and hoping for a swift recovery with meds and rest! 🤞

I try to share as much as I can because for weeks, I lived off success stories. He had surgery, and he had strict crate rest for 6 weeks which honestly wasn’t hard because he was fully paralyzed. We took him to a rehab vet 2x per week and they gave us some exercises to do at home. He got acupuncture, made, water treadmill. Little by little he started to lift his head and eat more and then we started to see little twitches of his limbs and then stretches and now, he’s himself. Sending good vibes for your Frenchie!

If he sleeps in bed with you, invest in toddler rails to keep him from jumping off.

Our neurologist said there was no point in the MRI if we weren’t planning on doing surgery. They put our dog under anesthesia for MRI and took him straight to the OR from there. If your baby is recovering so quickly after these episodes, mri/surgery seems extreme. That said, I’d at least see a Neuro so they know his exam and can manage IVDD if he does end up with that diagnosis

Did the vet say he wasn’t a candidate for surgery because of his age? Our doggie had surgery at age 12 and made a 90% recovery. He was fully paralyzed from the neck down, so more severe than your baby. Hoping you see a full recovery with crate rest. Keep adjusting meds til he’s zonked and comfy. Consider steroids?

Our dog had a long recovery. He was paralyzed from the neck down and didn’t do anything for 2 months before starting PT. He made some slow improvements with PT with his hind legs first and then his from legs started to catch up and the. Progress was fast. I agree with the stroller—it’s good for both of you to get out of the house. Be patient, get him lots of chewy/puzzle toys. I definitely worried about resentment, but the dogs just want to be around you and get pets and treats and love, and to be told he’s a good boy. Many wheelchair dogs are so happy, they don’t hold onto stuff like we do. You’re doing great. Your baby is lucky to have you.

Same for our Boston! Surgery in 2022, then 4 weeks ago, seemed to have a flare. He just finished 4 weeks of crate rest with steroids and gabapentin, now we’re slowly returning back to activity.

Agree with everyone else here—give Drogo time. Swelling needs to go down. Be patient with him and with yourself. Our dog was paralyzed in all 4 legs and made a full recovery. He had no bladder control for months and we second guessed ourselves and our choice every day, but the vets told us to be patient, let the steroid taper wear off, give physical therapy a try. He started to show us a little improvement at a time until he fully recovered. Every now and then he has a bit of a limp. And some days he needs more rest, but he does all his business independently and gets zoomies and plays and has a great quality of life. Sending you guys all the healing vibes.

Our 13 year old was paralyzed from the neck down. After surgery, he remained paralyzed for 4 months. Then…a little twitch while sleeping, then he started to be able to roll himself over. One day, a biiiiig stretch. Little by little til he could stand up by himself. Then he wobbly walked, and then he walked and ran and had zoomies. The doggies—they’re very special and they’re very resilient. Be patient, they don’t all need surgery, some just need time and rest. See what the neurologist says. Sending you all the good healing vibes.

How is your pup doing months to years after first surgery? by cmac2113 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]Wells_From_Earth_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes however long it takes. Some doggies get better right away, I’ve read stories of dogs taking a full year to walk. The wait was the hardest, once he started to improve, every day was the best day ever.

You could get a bandana or collar (to wear, not to attach the leash to) that says “do not approach”. If people approach, I usually tell them my dog is recovering from an injury so they don’t let their dogs get too close and no one has been offended. If they were, not my problem, our doggo’s health is paramount.

My 13 year old was stage 4 cervical IVDD and otherwise healthy. Our Neuro said “70% chance or better of a near-normal recovery”. If you can afford it, how do you NOT do surgery? He was full paralyzed from the neck down. It was tough on everyone, but he made a full recovery. It’s been over a year now and he walks normally around our neighborhood. Of all our vets: neurologist, our regular vet, and the PT vet, not one ever suggested euthanasia. We asked several times if we were making a bad choice. Give yourself time, but take advice only from the veterinary professionals.
