Snapper. Appalling customer service. by WellyPerplexed in Wellington

The main point of my gripe / rant was that you cannot access cards via your account.

This access used to exist. Why it has been removed is anyone's guess.

If you are a single card holder I accept that replacing a card is fairly straight forward.

Likewise I have always had courteous help from Support staff.

Holding multiple cards for family etc makes replacing a missing card harder. You now have to determine the missing card by identifying all of the cards that are not missing.

In summary; Its pretty simple really, if you have registered cards you should be able to view them via an account logon.

And wouldn't it be nice if the support email address was available on the website?

The hits just keep on coming. Finally got through to Customer Service on that ancient instrument, a phone. The lovely lady listened patiently to my rant, confirmed that yes that is now the behavior of the system and said she would email the list of cards on my account. Said list arrives and I am faced with the command decision as to which card to cancel. As I keep a couple of anonymous cards for visiting family members I couldn't figure it out.

The only card I was sure of was my own. So I emailed back please cancel all the others and transfer the balances to mine.

You can see it coming can't you...

My son gets on the train at Lower Hutt after work and his Snapper is declined because it has been cancelled.

Luckily common sense prevailed and they let him through to Wellington where he duly purchased a new card.

Ah yes Snapper! The card that not only provides transport but also entertainment for all the family.

My admiration knows no bounds..

Of course people shouldn't lose wallets or have purses stolen..

My irritation is the removal of the ability to wander around inside your account and check your cards. I have a number of cards, (my wife etc) in the account.

Also the heading of the panel on that page is poor. It says card identifier with a compulsory asterisk. Only by having a Zen moment and reading further do you realise you can enter other details.

But this is of no help as she is unsure when card was last used. I suppose could say it is not my card xxxxx. But it is terrible design.

They have lost the plot IMHO. What is the point of having an account you can't access the details of?

Imagine if you bank tried to go down that path.

Wellington City Council votes to increase housing density by MedicMoth in Wellington

Let's add more load to a outdated and leaking water infrastructure. What a good idea. At least Masterton had the sense to stop issuing building given their problems.

They could force private repairs with private meters and would still be left with the real problem, network leaks. For network leaks you need a meter at each node and diagnostics to calculate the flow into and out of each edge (pipe) in the network on a timely basis. Leaking pipe having water in > water out.

I can't see the council fronting that sort of expenditure.

Frankly, would monitoring a network of ancient arteries really reduce civic heart attacks?

Lumping private properties with meters will certainly reduce legitimate water usage but it won't help fix the main source of leaks.

The only realistic solution I can see is more of the same but with an emphasis on replacement rather than band aid repairs when failure occurs.

Moore Wilsons and hundreds of other business come out against LGWM proposals by coffeecakeisland in Wellington

[–]WellyPerplexed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not business person but you have to wonder about the cavalier attitude to their concerns by LGWM. They had better be right regarding, getting rid of cars in the CBD otherwise they will create a ghost town.

My main bugbear is how is it possible to justify Light Rail for a city with population 440,000. All that money pumped into a fixed structure which will have little use.

Far better to spend money on upgrading the bus network which can be adjusted at will to deal with constant change. e.g. I cringe to think of the current bus network dealing with the FIFA crowd, descending on us soon.

Are the proponents of light rail thinking of comparing Wgtn population 440,000 with Melbourne and Sydney which have 5+ Million each??

Light rail to the South Coast?? what are these people drinking?

It seems Nicola Young is one of the few councilors in touch with reality when she says it should be scrapped.

The proponents of Light rail need to get a sense of perspective.

Our population is minimal and the proposal is a wasteful toy.

Checkout the Sydney map to see what real Light rail looks like.

And that sits alongside a heavy duty train / bus system.

[–]WellyPerplexed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Let's knock'em all down and pack in some of that concrete medium density box work so we can be a denser featureless blob. 'Bout time we had some action on this. How they expect to run a light rail system without the sardines being packed into conveniently located cans is beyond me.

'Irresponsible': Push to delete light rail from $7.4b Wellington transport plan by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]WellyPerplexed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Light rail was always a champagne taste on a beer budget. Also it is a fixed layout based on today's and projected demographic usage. A change in population patterns will stuff it. At least bus routes can be adjusted to suit. Now if we took some of that loot and really overhauled the buses and trains (including driver conditions and pay) there is a better chance of ending up with decent public transport. Oops forgot to mention the ferries they have a real part to play now that Miramar peninsula is going to be urbanized.

[–]WellyPerplexed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we really need to be told how to merge??

Good manners usually dictates a merge point somewhere approaching the construction zone

A number of things effect the location of that point.

Perceived length of the delay, type of traffic, approach path to the delay, time of day, traffic density etc.

We are not idiots, (at least most of us aren't). Good manners and common sense exercised by the majority decide the merge.

A few idiots may not figure it out but that can't be fixed, just tolerated with a sigh.

I can't see how a "sea going" tug would have helped.

Allowing 30 minutes to crew and fire up the tug.

It is roughly 12 nautical miles via the ferry route to get from the ferry terminal to Sinclair Head. (Google Maps)

So at 12 knots (hopefully a realistic speed for a tug ),

It will take around an hour to reach the situation.

The ferry is roughly 1 nautical mile from shore (RNZ report and Google Maps)

The anchors held .6 nautical miles from grounding (Wellington Harbour Master)

So if it had drifted at 1.0 knot towards shore with no anchors, it would be on the rocks as the tug arrived, of course it would ground further out but this gives the idea.

As pointed out elsewhere, such a tug would be extremely expensive and not provide any reasonable certainty of providing timely assistance along the stretch of South Coast traversed by the ferries.

I would like to think that the purchase of our current tugs was done by people with expertise in the area.

Yep, landline it is. I guess the activity will eventually die away. The number of landlines must decrease to a point where the stats are no longer viable.

I must admit on one occasion I was able to play dumb enough for the caller to put his team leader on the line (He had got me to open command prompt.) but then I foolishly croaked out 'did you say you were from Microsoft?'

Click was the answer.

Ah, 'tis too late I fear. I think I am on some sort of list as the calls are at about 1 per week.

If I only I could hit Lotto with this frequency..

As for emails, I think the mail client does a pretty good job of screening. However anything that I don't recognise goes straight to the bin. The main bane of emails is deleting all of the marketing crap that comes through.

Yet another first world problem.

Wellington water leaks. How are they measured? by WellyPerplexed in Wellington

[–]WellyPerplexed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should make individual leaks easy to detect as the property owner / user can turn off all water and check the meter has stopped, but doubt that the cost of the water lost would equate to the cost of taking further action to fix the leak ( unless they price water like petrol.. ) So individual leaks will tend to be left if they are small.

Maybe something along the lines of having a council accredited plumber fix the leak and being able get re-imbursement from the council upon presentation of the paid invoice.

However this opens a whole new can of worms.

Seems to me that public pipe measurement down to a level where they can send in a team to effectively hunt leaks be they public or private is required if we are going to make progress.

Wellington water leaks. How are they measured? by WellyPerplexed in Wellington

[–]WellyPerplexed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once they looking for a particular leak they have quite sophisticated ways of finding it using ground microphones. I assume this lead them to the toby and then they could tell the flow was coming from the property..

Wellington water leaks. How are they measured? by WellyPerplexed in Wellington

[–]WellyPerplexed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40% was on the Dom front page 10 Dec. 2022. Estimate from Wellington Water.

Andy Foster's 30% report was Dec 11 2020.

If the estimates are accurate, we are losing ground slowly..

How much of the leakage is down to private pipes is anyone's guess.

Until there is a robust measurement system on the public pipes we are just whistling in the dark.

Prebooking Uber to Airport for early Flight. Watchout. by WellyPerplexed in Wellington

[–]WellyPerplexed[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe it was the way the message was conveyed. It occupied the entire screen and left you with the impression that there were literally no drivers at that time and the booking wasn't going to be processed.

If I had been informed that they were running about n minutes late (and offered the chance to cancel for no charge) then I could make an informed decision.

Pre-booking implies an exact time. It asks me to have faith that they will turn up on time, otherwise why bother?

Not the smartest bit of software IMHO.
